The brochure outlines the benefits of the climate the resources and agriculture in the region ease of transport and access and other features: "People from all sections of the country who desire to better their condition are cordially invited to come to Arkansas and secure cheap homes. All classes of citizens without regard to political opinions join to build up the material interests of the state and develop its extraordinary resources. The colored people constitute only one-fourth of the population." The usual "Bound for the Happy Lands" circular woodcut of the railroad adorns two panels and a small map highlights the Texas Short Line from St. Louis to Texarkana. With the ink stamp of Henry H. Oblong format:. <br/><br/>"What is remarkable about this performance is that the Bamberger achieved the 'Flyer' speed on a mainline with considerable single track that was crowded with freight and passenger trains. The Bamberger ran both speedy lightweight 'Bullet' cars acquired in 1939 from the Fonda Johnstown and Gloversville and heavy old interurban cars. Business was so good during World War II the lightweights built in 1932 had to be removed from some of the 'Flyer' schedules because of their limited seating capacity and old cars were speeded up for the schedules" from the Utah Rails website. Illustrated with wood engraved frontis depicting the 'Baldwin Locomotive Works' factory 11 intratextual cuts & 16 pasted-in photographs of divers Baldwin locomotives. 4to: 11" x 7-5/8" <br/><br/>The Baldwin Locomotive Works an American builder of railroad locomotives was located in Pennsylvania originally Philadelphia then moving in 1906 to nearby Eddystone. The company was the largest US producer of custom made-to-order steam locomotives. Founded in the early 1830s by Matthais Baldwin the firm stopped producing locomotives in 1956 ceasing business in 1972 having produced over 70000 engines the vast majority powered by steam. This one of the firm's first photograhically illustrated catalogues a lavish production issued in the ealy 1870s as Baldwin overtook Rogers as the premier locomotive manufacturer in the United States. Herein will be found photographs of their divers products including fill in with some names of locomotives. While not a particularly rare catalogue it's importance & desirablility lies in documenting the ascent to prominence of this significant US heavy equipment manufacturer as well as being an early trade catalogue illustrated with actual photographs. The text commences on a high note: "This is the State whose latch string is out and offers homes and promises of prosperity to all who will come." The emphasis is agriculture and stock raising with glowing essays including "Great Grazing District" "Livestock in the State" "Orchards and Groves Planted" "The Pure Air of the Prairies" "The Herd Law - No Fences Allowed" "The Cheapest Lands in America" "Sheep Raising in Nebraska" "Education the Birthright of Every Nebraska Child" etc. OCLC lists two similar items each in a single copy: one at Yale with the imprint of Lincoln: State Journal Co. 1881; and one at the Huntington with the imprint of St. Louis: A. Gast 1881 The present copy has no imprint. A. Zeese & Co. the Chicago engraving firm who is attributed on the first map specialized in half tones zinc etching relief-line lithogravure and photoelectric type. In its early years the railroad opened Kansas to settlement. Because long stretches of its main line traverse areas without water Santa Fe was one of the first buyers of diesel locomotives for freight service. It was the Santa Fe Railway that helped to make Baldwin Locomotives obsolete. 1970151354N.p.: N.p. 1970. Archive of 32 vintage photographs documenting the October 20 1970 collision of two trains along the Chicago Rock Island and Pacific Railroad line in Raytown Missouri. Also included in the archive is a single broadside reward poster offering $5000 for information pertaining to the accident. <br/><br/>According to a contemporary newspaper article which appeared in nearby Jackson County's Independence Examiner the accident was believed to have been caused by juvenile vandalism to a nearby track switch. The collision and subsequent derailment resulted in the death of one engineer whose partial body is visible in several photographs. <br/><br/>The photographs in the archive range from close-up shots of the mangled train cars and tracks to distance views of the surrounding woods. Frequently displayed in the images is a small handwritten police chalkboard noting the date location and case numbers. A vivid and interesting look at investigative photography and railway disasters in the late twentieth century. <br/><br/>Photographs 10 x 8 inches housed in a manila envelope with the logo of Chicago Rock Island and Pacific Railroad Co. on the top left corner. Each issue has color map showing Erie connections--1945 issue deals with labor shortage affected by the war but also raises concerns for unnamed competitors that it says received unfair government advantages. Each year until 1950 show significant losses in revenue both in freight and passenger areas. The 1950 report shows an increase and hope for the future. Of course they could not forsee the role of the Interstate Highway system and growth of trucking would minimize the role they had once enjoyed. unknown books
