Natural resources and ecosystem services have been seriously undervalued in development planning in the Lower Mekong Basin LMB which spans Cambodia Laos Thailand and Vietnam. Intensive agriculture has initially led to higher yields a lower poverty rate and economic growth. However it is destroying the very resources it needs such as water. The excessive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides has contaminated soils and threatened critical inland fisheries. Significant coastal erosion soil salinity and deteriorating marine ecosystems and climate change add to an urgent need to take into account the value of ecosystem resources to improve policy-making. This volume presents up-to-date case studies and surveys trends and challenges for natural resource-based livelihoods by researchers and institutes collaborating across the LMB under the Lower Mekong Public Policy Initiative. Its recommendations include: coordinating national and trans-boundary water governance along the Mekong River; pursuing alternatives to massive hydropower expansion for Lao PDR; harnessing renewable energy for efficient and less polluting electricity generation in Vietnam; a fund to improve the health and yields of shrimp in aquaculture; diversifying mixed rice and aquaculture/fishing systems for economic sustainability and better incomes; improving choices processing and markets for Cambodian rice farmers; adapting a national rural development program in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta; recognizing the adverse impacts of economic corridors on vulnerable forest-dependent populations; acknowledging and supporting women in their changing economic roles; and empowering local government to help local communities deal with problems caused by a private rubber land concession in Cambodia. Questa pubblicazione costituisce un complemento ai saggi storico-tecnici di questa stessa Casa Editrice sul trasporto tramviario nella città di Roma presentando notizie e soprattutto immagini d¿epoca anche a colori ricavate in massima parte da antiche cartoline illustrate del periodo fra la seconda metà dell¿Ottocento ed il 1929 quando fu in attività la Società Romana Tramways Omnibus, la quale.in regime di monopolio per i trasporti urbani dal 1880 al 1910 (esattamente 100 anni or sono!) cedette gradualmente all'appena nata Azienda Tramviaria Autonoma Municipale, le varie linee col materiale rotabile ed i depositi. Chiuse definitivamente nel 1929 la sua mirabile attività con la quale non solo si era sempre e prontamente adeguata al vertiginoso espandersi dell¿abitato, ma aveva pure attuato soluzioni d¿avanguardia come ad esempio: la messa in circolazione il 6 luglio 1890 della prima motrice elettrica nazionale, gli esperimenti dell¿impiego di autobus nel 1905, l¿adozione di personale femminile con relativo disegno della divisa durante la prima guerra mondiale e così via.Le immagini della pubblicazione mostrano strade e piazze di Roma assai più godibili di adesso, con pedoni frammisti ad omnibus, tram a cavalli, motrici elettriche e convogli, la cui presenza, timida e discreta, è di gran lunga meno invasiva delle automobili in sosta ed in circolazione di oggi.

Questo libro costituisce il seguito al precedente "Roma ai tempi della S.R.T.O. - Società Romana Tramways Omnibus (1885 - 1929)" e si propone di estendere per un altro ventennio l'osservazione del prodigioso sviluppo del sistema tramviario di Roma e dintorni con primati alcuni pure a livello mondiale, mediante una serie d'immagini d'epoca anche a colori corredate da opportune notizie, ricordi, chiarimenti. Sviluppo poi frenato e in seguito anche nettamente ridimensionato da scelte politiche nel campo dei trasporti pubblici successivamente rivelatesi tutt'altro che felici. Analoga situazione a Parigi dove addirittura, anche per la presenza della capillare rete del metrò, il sistema tramviario è scomparso, ma viene riscoperto a partire dal 1992 come avvenuto a Roma con la linea 2 del 1990 e la 8 del 1998.Queste singolari analogie sono state messe in risalto in una recente dettagliata mostra parallela che le mette in opportuno risalto, realizzata nell'ambito del gemellaggio esclusivo fra le due illustri capitali.
