196126894New York: Pocket Books Inc. GC-768. Very Good. 1961. Cardinal Edition. Softcover First Printing. a good sound copy with only light wear a tiny bit of damage at lower rear hinge. Mass Market PB The first U.S. paperback printing of Werfel's epic of the early days of the Armenian genocide. Controversial to this day ask a Turk it was first published in the U.S. by The Viking Press in 1934 the original German edition had come out the year before and had no additional American editions until the appearance of this one more than a quarter-century later -- which suggests that the same forces of denial and suppression primarily emanating from the Turkish government were at play in the publishing world as in the motion picture industry where protests and pressure applied by the Turks prevented M-G-M which had owned the movie rights to the book since the 1930s from ever getting a film adaptation off the ground. One very bad one was produced independently in the early 1980s after M-G-M had divested itself of the rights and washed its hands of the whole thing. . Pocket Books, Inc. (GC-768) paperback books

122957 Carlton Street Edinburgh. 23 July 1903. 3pp. 12mo. Bifolium. Good on lightly-aged paper. Dunlop begins by informing Hodge that his cousin William Hamilton Dunlop of Downside Ayrshire 'has purchased as one of the Burns Monument Trustees the "Veitch" of Paisley copy of the Kilmarnock Burns for £1000'. He describes the book as 'the most perfect copy known uncut & with both blue paper covers much better than the Lamb copy.' Dunlop is 'glad it has been secured for the Burns Cottage Museum at Alloway & is not going across the fish pond i.e. to the United States.' Dunlop's cousin was the underbidder 'through the Edinburgh bookseller Mr William Brown for my <> copy at your sale of his Library & when he missed that as they have endless money I told him he ought to buy the best copy known when it was available'. Dunlop states that Veitch 'picked it up for £10 in the "sixties." It came from Arniston Dundas & the history is I believe well authenticated.' The London bookseller Sabin 'wanted £750 for the Lamb copy when my cousin went to see it but I think he is better with this one'. He concludes by stating that 'Veitch asked £1000 & wd. not budge a shilling'. In a postscript he asks Hodge to send catalogues of scientific books: 'I have a considerable scientific Library of my own & such books interest me. At present I am on the look out for a well bound complete set of "Nature."' 7 Carlton Street, Edinburgh. 23 July 1903. unknown

Bernhard Heinrich Karl Martin von Bülow 3 May 1849 - 28 October 1929 created Fürst von Bülow in 1905 was a German statesman who served as Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs for three years and then as Chancellor of the German Empire from 1900 to 1909. von Bulow's first conspicuous act as chancellor was a masterly defence in the Reichstag of German imperialism in China. Bülow often spent his time defending German foreign policy there to say nothing of covering for the Kaiser's many undiplomatic gaffes. He wrote four volumes of autobiography to be published after his death which markedly altered public perception of his character as they included his candid descriptions of others. For twelve years Bulow was in daily attendance on William II. It is the extraordinary portrait of his former friend and sovereign the man to whom he was indebted for the highest offices and greatest honors that has caused a sensation in political and historical circles. Bulow reviews in detail the Kaiser's journeys ill-considered speeches and politics. William II he maintains possessed of a delicately balanced temperament which gravitated between extreme optimism and extreme despair. That he was charming and gifted in many respects Bulow makes clear. Bulow possessed unquestionable ability as a negotiator; he was adept at harmonizing opposing factions and smoothing over awkward situations. A gifted public speaker popular with the Reichstag and the Press Bulow was regarded as one of the most cultured gentlemen in European public life. He was one of the last of the political grand seigneurs. Little, Brown, and Company hardcover
