Richard Henry Wallace Dunlop was a Scotsman in the Bengal Civil Service. He did not enjoy the hot season in the plains and spent every available leave hunting in the hills and mountains of the Himalaya. This book is not merely a recounting of his exciting hunting stories - it is also a practical guide for any British sportsman who wished to follow in his footsteps and enjoy hunting in the Himalaya. He covers all the necessary supplies including the best firearms to take. He describes hunts after elephant tiger deer game birds including pheasant wild yak tibetan wild ass and other animals. He discusses nature geography and the politics of the region including that of Tibet. Richard Henry Wallace Dunlop returned to Scotland where he married his second wife and had 5 children. His oldest Marion Wallace Dunlop became a leading suffragette and was the first to use a hunger strike to further women's suffrage. Dunlop included ironic comments on the ‘delights’ of Canadian cookery and was unable to refrain from witty and sarcastic remarks on the internal divisions among Presbyterian bodies and on the connection between Methodists and politics.†Story William ‘Tiger’ Dunlop who had previously been posted to Upper Canada in 1813 as acting surgeon of the 89th Regiment returned in 1826 with John Galt in the service of the Canada Company settling just north of Goderich. In 1829 he became inspector of the company’s lands and settlements and in 1833 general superintendent. Becoming increasingly critical of the company he finally resigned in 1838. From 1841 to 1845 he sat for Huron in the Legislative Assembly and thereafter he was superintendent of the Lachine Canal.
