2004BN29929Blackwell Pub Professional 2004. 2004. Hardcover. 264 x 178 x 28 cm. A common goal of human and veterinary medicine is to prevent and cure disease. To reach this goal there must be a greater investment in the pathophysiology of diseases. Simply put reductionist methodology fails to answer all of the questions. Pathophysiology represents a new approach to understanding the nature of disease processes an approach already being embraced in human medicine. By integrating the basic sciences with pathology and the clinical sciences "Veterinary Pathophysiology" bridges a significant and widening gulf in the veterinary professional curriculum. The aim of this trailblazing text is to be scholarly - yet practical - with a focus on the recognition and prevention of early dysfunction. In contrast to modern clinical veterinary medicine which has focused progressively on the prescription of medications for individual symptoms and signs of disease this text gives attention to understanding the functional changes that accompany disease. To offset over reliance on pharmacotherapy "Veterinary Pathophysiology" offers insight into the interaction of the functional components of the mammalian body and their reaction not only to disease but also to the risk of imbalances introduced by dietary and therapeutic manipulation. "Veterinary Pathophysiology" will supplement existing textbooks in general or introductory pathology and veterinary internal medicine by introducing a new framework for thinking about the nature of disease. The integrated problem-based approach of this book addresses the changing needs of veterinary college curricula and will be a key resource book for problem-based approaches to learning. "Veterinary Pathophysiology" is an invaluable text for the practicing veterinarian as well as veterinary students and instructors in general pathology pathogenic microbiology parasitology and immunology physiology neurobiology oncology toxicology and pharmacology. This unique text offers students and clinicians the most comprehensive introduction to understanding the interactions between organs and functional systems that underlie infectious and metabolic diseases. With chapter contributions from 25 international authors this title is the definitive text and reference in veterinary pathophysiology. It belongs on the desk of every veterinary student and in the library of every instructor or clinician interested in a deeper understanding of animal diseases. Robert H. Dunlop DVM PhD is Professor Emeritus in the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Minnesota. Charles-Henri Malbert DVM is Director of Research at the Research Unit on Calf and Pig Production UMRVP a division of the Institute for Agriculture Research INRA in St. Gilles France Contributors.Preface.Acknowledgments.1 Physiology and Pathophysiology of the Internal Environment.2 Pathophysiology of Cellular Regulation Cell Death and Cancer.3 Host-Pathogen Interactions.4 Pathophysiology of the Gastrointestinal Tract.5 Pathophysiology of the Respiratory Tract.6 Pathophysiology of Cardiovascular Disease.7 Pathophysiology of the Reproductive System.8 Pathophysiology of Muscle Disease.9 Pathophysiology of the Central Nervous System.Subsection 1: Infectious-Inflammatory Diseases of the Central Nervous System.Subsection 2: Pathophysiology of Non-Infectious Neurologic Diseases.Subsection 3: Mechanisms of Central Nervous System Homeostasis.10 Welfare Stress Behaviour and Pathophysiology.11 Pathophysiology of the Liver.12 Pathophysiology of Endocrin Homestasis Examples.Subsection 1: Pathophysiology of Calcium-Phosphorus Metabolism and Bone.Subsection 2: Metabolic Disorders of Calcium-Phosphorus Homeostasis.Subsection 3: Pathophysiology of the Thyroid Gland.Subsection 4: Pathophysiology of the Endocrine Pancreas.13 Pathophysiology of Homeostatic and Toxic Disorders.Index Zusatzinfo 250 illustrations Sprache englisch Maße 184 x 260 mm Veterinärmedizin ISBN-10 0-8138-2826-0 / 0813828260 ISBN-13 978-0-8138-2826-8 / 9780813828268 Veterinary Pathophysiology English Hardcover veterinary medicine pathology Metabolic Disorders infectious diseases mammals Reproductive System Muscle Disease Central Nervous System Neurologic Welfare Stress animal Behaviour the Liver Endocrin Homestasis Bone Calcium-Phosphorus Homeostasis UMRVP Veterinärmedizin Tiermedizin Tierheilkunde Tierarzt Tierheilkunde Robert H.
