1945127231945. Original wraps. Very Good -. A wonderful significant piece of World War II history. A fragile booklet a log mapping out in detail the schedule and itinerary of this American battalion. SIGNED BY OVER 100 RETURNING SOLDIERS FROM THE BATTALION THE 733 F.A. BN WHICH SET OUT FROM MISSISSIPPI IN LATE MARCH '44 AND SOME 7 1/2 MONTHS LATER --IN MID-NOVEMBER-- PENETRATED INTO GERMANY. This booklet has obviously travelled long and far but has held up nicely and is still very solid in its stapled salmon-colored wrappers. Light creasing and a bit of inevitable wear are far outweighed by the miracle of these returning heroes all 106 of them signing their names and addresses on the "Memoranda" pages and the pastedowns of this very scarce logbook.

paperback books

A chronicle of the short-lived Bank of the United States and its continued involvement in US Navy pensions.

After the demise of the Second Bank of the United States in 1836 a result of the historical "Bank War" between US President Andrew Jackson and Bank President Nicholas Biddle Biddle attempted to resuscitate the institution as a commercial bank chartered by the State of Pennsylvania. The former bank's stock holders except the US government voted to transfer the old bank's assets and liabilities to the new bank which made it difficult to disentangle the dealings of the defunct bank with the newly state-chartered bank. This letter from Secretary of the Navy Mahlon Dickerson discusses arrangements for The Bank of the United States to fund Navy Pensions and is an example of it's continued involvement with the US Government after the Second Bank of the United States charter had expired. Reading in part:

"I have received your letter of the 19th inst. and agree to the arrangement you propose that for the funds you may place at the disposal of this department for the payment of Navy Pensions credit shall be given on the Bond from the Bank of the United States chartered by the Legislature of Pennsylvania to the United States."

Written at the onset of the Panic of 1837 Biddle would fail to replicate the success he experienced as President of the Second Bank of the United States and resigned as President in 1839. The Bank of the Unites States failed in 1841. Biddle faced financial ruin and was arrested for fraud but was acquitted before his death in 1844.

Born in Hanover Township New Jersey Mahlon Dickerson 1770-1853 was a cavalry veteran of the Whiskey Rebellion who would go on to be elected Governor of New Jersey serve as US Senator receive two appointments as Secretary of the Navy and be confirmed as a judge for the United States District Court of New Jersey. unknown books

It marked the lowest pitch reached in discipline and fighting and efficiency by the fleet in the 18th century and it had a very bad effect in confirming the pedantic system of tactics set up by the old Fighting Instructions . 1595953 original silver gelatin print photographs. c. 1921-1923. Mostly 3"x5" with a few 2"x"3 inches. Loose. Original vernacular photographs most likely taken by one or more servicemen in the U.S. Navy. While many of the photographs show battleships on exercises and fellow sailors on deck including some African American servicemen at least 9 bear firsthand witness to the infamous Honda Point disaster of the coast of Santa Barbara in 1923. More photographs from the group may be the ships involved before disaster struck. At least 4 additional photographs show the famous scuttling of German destroyers at Scapa Floe which occurred after peace was declared in 1921.

The Honda Point disaster was the largest peacetime loss of U.S. Navy ships. On the evening of September 8 1923 seven Clemson class destroyers while traveling at 20 knots 37 km/h ran aground at Honda Point a few miles from the northern side of the Santa Barbara Channel off Point Arguello on the coast in Santa Barbara County California. Two other ships grounded but were able to maneuver free off the rocks. Twenty-three sailors died in the disaster. Much study has been directed at determining the causes of such a terrible accident. Most likely the cause was a combination of heavy seas possibly caused by an earthquake in Japan darkness fog and the mistrust of the leadership on board the leading destroyer Delphy for the new radio navigation system preferring instead to use outdated estimation-based navigational methods. Although the Delphy immediately sounded her alarm after running aground the remainder of the squadrom was tragically traveling too close and one ship after another became entangled in the rocks. The photographs show from many views the various ships involved in the accident either listing heavily on rocks or sinking. Some of them can be identified as the U.S.S. S.P. Lee the Pervical the Nicholas the Woodbury the Chauncy and the leading ship Delphy. Most of the photos are taken very close by clearly from on board another ship perilously close to the disaster and most likely one of the fatal squadron. The final two appear to have been taken shortly after the sailor was rescued and show the wrecked vessels from the beach and from a rocky cliff overlooking the channel.

Four photos in the group record the incident at Scapa Floe on June 21 1919 where a German fleet of battleships was ordered by the Allies to report following the November Armistice ending World War I. They remained anchored for over 7 months and when word of the Peace Treaty of Versailles came in Admiral Reuter was ordered to surrender the vessels. However before they could be forced to comply the crew scuttled the vessels. We see in these photos the German Destroyers sinking including the S.M.S. Bayern and the S.M.S. Hindenburg with only smokestacks and tripod showing above the waterline. Another photo is labeled in the negative "German sailors leaving their doomed vessels for the last time. The remaining photographs in the group show submarines docked near San Francisco the Battleships Texas California and Florida sailors including a few African American aboard the U.S.S. Goff sailors carrying out routine exercises such as loading the deck gun launching torpedos maneuvering at speed and at least 6 photos of destroyers making heavy smoke which could be the Honda Point ships preceding the disaster. All photos are in very good condition with no previous sign of gluing or taping. Some are numbered and others have notes in white negative verso. A few are faded to sepia but most are still very dark and detailed. An important and historically relevant collection. unknown books

Here a Union sailor describes one of the last naval incidents of the war in which the CSS Webb made a desperate run down the Red River and the Mississippi in a bid for the open ocean before finally being scuttled by its crew past New Orleans. The unidentified author devoted most of his long letter to a description of the pursuit: "There has been a very dareing sic deed committed on this river since I wrote. All the men of war below us fired at her but did not hit her. She was going down the river at the rate of 30 miles an hour. There was a torpedo projecting from her bow. . . .
