4to., First Edition, with 11 coloured plans (8 double-page), 4 full-page diagrams and several illustrations and charts in the text; pictorial boards lettered in white, a fine copy. Naval Staff Histories were produced after WWII in order to provide as full an account of the various actions as was possible at the time. The audience was largely serving officers; some of the volumes were classified, not to restrict their distribution but to allow the writers to be as candid as possible. At this stage of history they represent a uniquely valuable resource. This volume contains Battle Summary 18 (Mediterranean Convoys 1941) and Battle Summary 32 (Malta Convoys 1942), completed by J. Owen and originally issued in 1944 and 1945 respectively. These summaries were combined and extensively revised by Pitcairn-Jones and re-issued in 1957 as Selected Convoys (Mediterranean) 1941-42. By this time Pitcairn-Jones had access to the full records including those captured from German and Italian forces.

Much of the text appeared first as an extended series of papers in 'The Mariner's Mirror' from 1929 until the author's death in 1948.

2 vols., 8vo., Second Impression (first work) and First Edition (second work), with frontispieces and plates; cloth, backstrips lettered in silver, a very good, clean set in unclipped dustwrapper, the wrapper to first vilume kightly rubbed at extremities. THE FIRST VOLUME IS A SIGNED PRESENTATION COPY FROM THE AUTHOR WITH HIS SIGNED HOLOGRAPH INSCRIPTION ON FRONT FREE ENDPAPER. THE SECOND VOLUME IS SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR ON FRONT FREE ENDPAPER. Winn enlisted as an anonymous ordinary seaman after three years as a war correspondent. The first volume covers his training at Ganges and his service abroad HMS Cumberland. The second volume covers his invaliding from the RN after which he joined the Merchant service and served on 'Pozarica' throughout PQ17. His well-known account of this convoy forms a separate work. The first volume is frequently (and inaccurately) recorded as 'Home from THE Sea'; inexplicably it appears thus in both Enser and Law. Enser, p.384 (first work only); Law, 0750, 0751 respectively.

Splendid set of the most comprehensive study to date, comprising 'The Hunters 1939-1942' (1997) and 'The Hunted 1942-1945' (1999). The Battle of the Atlantic was the longest, hardest-fought and most critical sea conflict in history: 'they [the U-boats] were the only thing that really frightened me' said Churchill. A study on this scale has been feasible only in the twenty years or so following the release of large official archives (the last of which principally concerned codes and code-breaking) in London and Washington. First published by Random House in New York 1996-98; the UK edition was published in far smaller numbers and in already difficult to find in this state.

This copy was formerly in the library of the Squadron Medical Officer, HMS WIZARD, Dartmouth Training Squadron, and carries its stamps on front paste-down. Published in the official History of the Second World War. United Kingdom Medical Series. Second of Coulter's two volumes on the RNMS (the first volume deals with administration). The present volume is much more wide-ranging that its title suggests, for it is virtually a history of the war at sea. It is inevitably fuller on the earlier years of the war when casualties were heavier. Importantly, it includes the diary of the MO of HMS Scylla covering almost a year. Very scarce. This standard work was first published in 1912 (though NMM gives 1914). This edition is 'revised and brought up to date in order to present to the reader the exact state of our Navy when the fighting began'. Nice set of this important survey, augmented by Wyliie's splendid colour plates. NMM V/1 2558 (recording the original edition).

Pubblicazione integrale del trattato manoscritto sulla marina militare veneziana di Cristoforo Canale (Canal). Il testo è ricavato dalla copia proveniente dalla biblioteca dell'ex Marina Militare Austriaca di Pola, ora nel Museo Storico Navale di Venezia. L'opera, databile secondo Mario Nani Mocenigo al 1540, è dedicata a Nicolò Gabrielli ed è impostata in forma di conversazione alla quale l'autore fa partecipare quattro dei più notevoli personaggi vissuti a Venezia in quegli anni e che occuparono altissimi posti nel governo della Repubblica : Il Capitano Generale da mar Vincenzo Cappello, il Provveditore Generale d'Armata Alessandro Contarini ed i Senatori Marc'Antonio Cornaro e Giacomo Canale zio di Cristoforo. Ottimo, fresco esemplare della tiratura stampata su carta di Maslianico di 321 copie numerate (n. 207).
