Winn enlisted as an anonymous ordinary seaman after three years as a war correspondent. The first volume covers his training at Ganges and his service abroad HMS Cumberland. The second volume covers his invaliding from the RN after which he joined the Merchant service and served on 'Pozarica' throughout PQ17. His well-known account of this convoy forms a separate work. The first volume is frequently (and inaccurately) recorded as 'Home from THE Sea'; inexplicably it appears thus in both Enser and Law. Enser, p.384 (first work only); Law, 0750, 0751 respectively.
