1799254706Norwich 1799. very good-. a transfer of ownership for the vessel Susanna in pursuance of an act of the Congress of the United States completed in the hand of Nathan Richards ship surveyor at the Port of New London. The document outlines the history of the Susanna and the fact that she was built in Rhode Island in 1797 as a Brig and that James Munsell was the ships Master. In 1799 the Brig was altered to a Ship under the command of Oliver and Charles Fitch. According to the Connecticut Ship Database 1789-1939 Susanna was 67 feet in length with two masts and with a tonnage of 137 30/95 the same measurements provided in this document. 1930007047Various Photographers 1930. A group of 32 photographs 30 b&w and 2 color ranging in size from 4" x 6" to 7" x 9 1/2" 10 circa 1930's the rest 1957-1997 8 SIGNED signees to be determined. Credited photographers are: Ginger Gamage Forbes Jay Dee Ft. Worth TX V. Sladon NYC and John Lindquist. Some of the photos have writing verso identifying the subjects including one of Svetlova with Claudio Arrau and Mantovani. Several appear to be other noted people in the world of dance. And the 1930's photos several of which are signed appear to be friends of Svetlovas. Marina Svetlova 1923-2009 had a carrer in ballet that began as a child in 1931 and carried into the 1960's. She was a soloist with the Original Ballet Russe and a ballerina with the Metropolitan Opera Ballet. In 1969 she became a Professor of Ballet and chairwoman of the ballet department at Indiana University in Bloomington until 1992 gaining a reputation as a major educator in dance. Porcher Miles on the subject of the torpedo boats"; with a "Rebel Archives" stamp on verso. Chambliss 1809-1875; Sussex County Virginia plantation owner and member of the Confederate House of Representatives 1862-1865 was a member of the house Naval Affairs committee and William Porcher Miles 1822-1899; Mayor of Charleston South Carolina 1855-1857 U.S. House of Representatives 1857-1860 Confederate House of Representatives 1862-1865 was chairman of the house Military Affairs committee. This letter was written several months after the Confederacy's first torpedo boat the David made its initial attack against the Union ship New Ironsides in Charleston Harbor 5 October 1863 and two months before its second against the USS Memphis 6 March 1864. After two failed attempts at a sortie in 1863 losing 13 crew members in the process the Hunley became the first torpedo boat to actually sink a war vessel successfully completing its mission against the USS Housatonic in Charleston Harbor on February 17 1864. John W. Livingston 1804-1885 naval officer from New York City was the son of a naval surgeon William Turk in 1843 Turk and his wife Mary Livingston Turlk changed their name to Livingston. Livingston rose throught the service and untimately became Commodore during the Civil War and was promoted rear admiral in 1868. See DAB<br/><br/>The earliest letter here is a grant of one month's leave of absence to "Lieut. John W. Turk." In the form letter fromthe Dept. of Navy of 1855 the Acting Secretary of the Navy Charles W. Welsh summons Livingston to appear at a General Court Martial on board the "Receiving ship North Carolina at New York on the 28th day of April" 1855; and the letter from Captain Thomas A. Conover "Flag Officer Comdg U.S. Armed Force Coast of Afroca" conveys orders to Livingston then in command of the U.S.S. St. Louis to "proceed with all despatch to Cape Palmas on the West Coast of Africa and look after our interests in that quarter. unknown books

A clean sound very good copy inscribed and signed by Marina Lazzara the year following publication. Laid in is a curious bookmark black ink on acetate looks like it belongs with the booklet. Title page text continues seguing into dedications and acknowledgements. Of particular interest: "Special thanks to the Processed World collective and the Poetics Department at new College of California." Thanks magazines in which poems made a first appearance including PW where also some of Swanson's illustrations first gurgled. One of the prose pieces here is 5p. on tending bar in SF another longer one on "thrifting" which is not exclusively concerned with purchases. author unknown books

The photographs numbered on the versos in holograph pencil detail costumes for starring actors Marina Vlady and Jean Marais an exhibit of film stills and costume designs at a bookshop called "Lavocat" costumes displayed at tge shop "Delvaux" and the ephemera consists of a press packet detailing film credits and biographies an invitation for two to the premiere on March 26 at the Marivaux cinema a small slip with annotations in holograph ink and a carbon typescript from Maryse Martres to "Madame Armon" at Delvaux regarding the costumes. Housed in a large manila folder. <br/><br/>Based de La Fayette's 1678 anonymously published novel France's first historical novel widely regarded as an early psychological novel. The Princess marries a much older prince Marais but yearns for a handsome duke Poron. Her fidelity eventually coming into question. Marais also starred in Delannoy's and Cocteau's other collaboration "Love Eternal" 1943. Delannoy directed over 50 films at first well-regarded dissipating at the end of his career with several B-grade films. Costuming for the film was produced by Pierre Cardin and Marcel Escoffier both also worked together on "Beauty and the Beast" 1946 and "Fernandel the Dressmaker" 1956. <br/><br/>Martres Martin was a prolific French actress since 1948 notably "Girl on the Third Floor" 1955 and "The Happy Road" 1957 and she was later involved in press relations at Cinedis a notable film agency in operation since the Silent Film era. Kishi was born in 1932 and became a Japanese actress and writer. She married director Ciampi in 1957. Since 1996 she has been a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Population Fund UNFPA. The Delvaux shop has been producing leather goods mostly handbags since the 19th century with central locations in Belgium. <br/><br/>Photos range from 6.75 x 9 inches to 7.25 x 10.5 inches.
