Folio 12-1/4 x 8 inches. 16th Century Manuscript List of Lord High Admirals of the British Fleet. A late 16th-century manuscript listing of Admirals and Lord High Admirals of the British fleet from the reigns of Edward II to Elizabeth I.
The manuscript comprises 115 entries each 6-10 lines in length with transcriptions of the letters patent associated with each appointment. It was compiled during the reorganization of the admiralty office by John Hawkins just 2 years after the English victory over the Spanish Armada. We locate three other copies of this document: two at the British Library in the Harliean collection 6843.30 and the Cottonian manuscripts collection and a third in the National Maritime Museum the latter two copies were extended at a later date into the early 17th century.
Despite its title the manuscript opens with the appointments of Thomas de Coleton in 1264 during the reign of Henry III and William de Leiburn in 1286 during the reign of Edward I. The final entry is for Charles Howard appointed by Elizabeth I in 1585 and who several years later led the English to victory against the Spanish Armada. Provenance: Sir Thomas Phillipps; H.P. 1617WRCAM34089Madrid: Por la viuda de Alonso Martini 1617. 4344 leaves plus several pen and ink illustrations. Folio. Later speckled calf maroon gilt morocco label spine gilt. Covers with slight wear and scuffing at extremities. Faint dampstain in lower margin. Occasional contemporary manuscript notes and marks. Overall internally clean. Very good. A comprehensive list of rules addressed to ship captains governing the proper provisioning of Spanish vessels based in Sicily and Naples both then under Spanish rule. The text includes a bevy of rules expense guidelines and more and offers a fine window into the near-obsessive attention to detail that marked the administration of the Spanish military at the peak of its powers.

Of particular interest are several pen and ink sketches that include tools a ship in dry dock and storage bins as well as two much larger harbor plans of Palermo and Naples. Each drawing is keyed to a printed description of the location and shows fortifications lookouts and in the case of Naples dormitories. These are charming and well accomplished.

Good evidence of the Spanish navy at work at the height of empire with rules which certainly applied to vessels in the Americas as well. Extremely rare. Por la viuda de Alonso Martini unknown books

In April he was moved to the Hampton Court one of four ships which on 6 January 1745 fell in with two French ships of the line off Ushant. Two of the English ships the Captain and the Sunderland parted company. The Hampton Court and Dreadnought continued the chase; but although Mostyn's ship came up with the French it could not engage without the assistance of the Dreadnought and the two Frenchmen got safely into Brest."

Mostyn was brought up for court martial and acquitted but his conduct became an object of popular and official scorn -- this heavily critical pamphlet is usually attributed to Admiral Vernon. 16409World War II Original war time U.S. War and Navy Departments first editionsPocket Guide books for 18 countries. These guidebooks were prepared by the U.S. War and Navy Departments to educate American soldiers stationed overseas during the conflict. It includes points on culture language including slang local history and the military justification for American presence in the area; in this sense these pocket books are a unique distillation of American wartime policy composed by the highest decision-makers in government for the soldiers actually setting foot on foreign soil. These guides provide a concise yet rich example of wartime indoctrination and the resulting cultural associations and relationships formed within the average American by the war.

All 18 guide books are war dated and they include: Alaska 1943; Australia 1944; Egypt 1943; France 1944; Paris and Cities of Northern France 1944; Cities of Southern France 1944; Great Britain 1944; India 1944; Iran 1943; Iraq 1943; Italian Cities 1944; New Caledonia 1944; New Guinea and the Solomons 1944; New Zealand 1943; Northern Ireland 1942; Panama 1943; Syria 1942; West Africa 1943. Washington DC: War and Navy Departments 1942-1944. Stapled bindings. 5.25" x 4.25" inches. All first editions. Written often in a casual approachable way From the Pocket Guide to Iraq: "Herr Hitler knows he's licked if the peoples united against him stand their ground" these guides repeatedly drill in the strategic necessity for Americans to create diplomatic relations wherever they are stationed. For example from the Pocket Guide to New Zealand: "Always remember that it is to our enemies' advantage to sow seeds of discord between us and our allies and it is to our advantage to understand them and to make them our friends." They also illustrate explicit policy motivations as with the Pocket Guide to Iran: "As an American soldier assigned to duty in Iran once called Persia you are undertaking the most important job of your life. There is no other war theater where military success by the United States and her fighting allies will contribute more to final victory over the axis. You've heard a lot of talk in this war about life lines - the sea lanes and land routes by which military supplies flow into the combat zones to be turned against the enemy. Iran is much more that a life line. It is a major source of the power that keeps the United Nations' military machine turning over -- oil. Because of its prime strategic value Iran in the only country in the world where the armies of three of the United Nations -- Great Britain Russia and the United States -- are operating in daily touch with each other . You as an American have a responsibility that goes beyond the ordinary military duties required of you. Your country has a reputation throughout the world for decency and unselfishness in its dealings with other nations. That reputation is a major asset for us in this global war. By your actions you can uphold it or destroy it." Includes period maps of the respective regions as well as cartoon illustrations to accompany the instructional text. Scattered soiling and wear. Altogether very good. unknown books
1595953 original silver gelatin print photographs. c. 1921-1923. Mostly 3"x5" with a few 2"x"3 inches. Loose. Original vernacular photographs most likely taken by one or more servicemen in the U.S. Navy. While many of the photographs show battleships on exercises and fellow sailors on deck including some African American servicemen at least 9 bear firsthand witness to the infamous Honda Point disaster of the coast of Santa Barbara in 1923. More photographs from the group may be the ships involved before disaster struck. At least 4 additional photographs show the famous scuttling of German destroyers at Scapa Floe which occurred after peace was declared in 1921.

The Honda Point disaster was the largest peacetime loss of U.S. Navy ships. On the evening of September 8 1923 seven Clemson class destroyers while traveling at 20 knots 37 km/h ran aground at Honda Point a few miles from the northern side of the Santa Barbara Channel off Point Arguello on the coast in Santa Barbara County California. Two other ships grounded but were able to maneuver free off the rocks. Twenty-three sailors died in the disaster. Much study has been directed at determining the causes of such a terrible accident. Most likely the cause was a combination of heavy seas possibly caused by an earthquake in Japan darkness fog and the mistrust of the leadership on board the leading destroyer Delphy for the new radio navigation system preferring instead to use outdated estimation-based navigational methods. Although the Delphy immediately sounded her alarm after running aground the remainder of the squadrom was tragically traveling too close and one ship after another became entangled in the rocks. The photographs show from many views the various ships involved in the accident either listing heavily on rocks or sinking. Some of them can be identified as the U.S.S. S.P. Lee the Pervical the Nicholas the Woodbury the Chauncy and the leading ship Delphy. Most of the photos are taken very close by clearly from on board another ship perilously close to the disaster and most likely one of the fatal squadron. The final two appear to have been taken shortly after the sailor was rescued and show the wrecked vessels from the beach and from a rocky cliff overlooking the channel.

Four photos in the group record the incident at Scapa Floe on June 21 1919 where a German fleet of battleships was ordered by the Allies to report following the November Armistice ending World War I. They remained anchored for over 7 months and when word of the Peace Treaty of Versailles came in Admiral Reuter was ordered to surrender the vessels. However before they could be forced to comply the crew scuttled the vessels. We see in these photos the German Destroyers sinking including the S.M.S. Bayern and the S.M.S. Hindenburg with only smokestacks and tripod showing above the waterline. Another photo is labeled in the negative "German sailors leaving their doomed vessels for the last time. The remaining photographs in the group show submarines docked near San Francisco the Battleships Texas California and Florida sailors including a few African American aboard the U.S.S. Goff sailors carrying out routine exercises such as loading the deck gun launching torpedos maneuvering at speed and at least 6 photos of destroyers making heavy smoke which could be the Honda Point ships preceding the disaster. All photos are in very good condition with no previous sign of gluing or taping. Some are numbered and others have notes in white negative verso. A few are faded to sepia but most are still very dark and detailed. An important and historically relevant collection. unknown books

Confed. ship attempting to run the Mississippi River blockade at the close of the war. Here a Union sailor describes one of the last naval incidents of the war in which the CSS Webb made a desperate run down the Red River and the Mississippi in a bid for the open ocean before finally being scuttled by its crew past New Orleans. The unidentified author devoted most of his long letter to a description of the pursuit: "There has been a very dareing sic deed committed on this river since I wrote. All the men of war below us fired at her but did not hit her. She was going down the river at the rate of 30 miles an hour. There was a torpedo projecting from her bow. . . . A chronicle of the short-lived Bank of the United States and its continued involvement in US Navy pensions.

After the demise of the Second Bank of the United States in 1836 a result of the historical "Bank War" between US President Andrew Jackson and Bank President Nicholas Biddle Biddle attempted to resuscitate the institution as a commercial bank chartered by the State of Pennsylvania. The former bank's stock holders except the US government voted to transfer the old bank's assets and liabilities to the new bank which made it difficult to disentangle the dealings of the defunct bank with the newly state-chartered bank. This letter from Secretary of the Navy Mahlon Dickerson discusses arrangements for The Bank of the United States to fund Navy Pensions and is an example of it's continued involvement with the US Government after the Second Bank of the United States charter had expired. Reading in part:

"I have received your letter of the 19th inst. and agree to the arrangement you propose that for the funds you may place at the disposal of this department for the payment of Navy Pensions credit shall be given on the Bond from the Bank of the United States chartered by the Legislature of Pennsylvania to the United States."

Written at the onset of the Panic of 1837 Biddle would fail to replicate the success he experienced as President of the Second Bank of the United States and resigned as President in 1839. The Bank of the Unites States failed in 1841. Biddle faced financial ruin and was arrested for fraud but was acquitted before his death in 1844.

Born in Hanover Township New Jersey Mahlon Dickerson 1770-1853 was a cavalry veteran of the Whiskey Rebellion who would go on to be elected Governor of New Jersey serve as US Senator receive two appointments as Secretary of the Navy and be confirmed as a judge for the United States District Court of New Jersey. unknown books
