Die Ausgabe beinhaltet neben dem Deckblatt (Deutsches Kriegsschiff) einen großen Artikel mit vielen Abbildungen zum von deutschen U-Booten zerstörten britischen Flugzeugträger "Courageous". Der Artikel "In Wasser und Eis ... 'Die Courageous' sinkt" zeigt unter anderem das sinkende Schiff in großformatiger Abbildung. Auch ein ganzseitiger Artikel zur Rede Hitlers am 30. Januar 1940 im Berliner Sportpalast ist enthalten. Die Ausgabe enthält daneben einen mehrseitigen Artikel (Reportage von Wolfgang Weber) zur japanischen Besatzung in Shanghai und Peking, sowie eine Reportage zum sogenannten Shanghai-Express zwischen beiden Städten unter japanischer Besatzung. Hier wird interessanterweise auf die strenge Hygiene der Japaner hingewiesen, wobei jeder Reisende vor der Reise untersucht und behandelt wird aus Angst vor Seuchen etc. In der Illustrierten sind zudem Fortsetzungsromane (Gertrud von Brockdorff) und viele unterhaltende Artikel für die Berliner vorhanden, enthalten sind auch zahlreiche zeitgenössische Werbeanzeigen, darunter ganzseitige Zigaretten-Anzeigen für die Marken Reemtsma, F 58 und Milde Sorte (Wien). Il Bestiario Universale è un grande gioco: non solo perché invita a combinare 16 illustrazioni di animali comuni come la tigre, il rinoceronte, l'elefante... e le loro descrizioni, ma anche perché propone come vere le divertenti (e spesso inventate di sana pianta) informazioni presenti nel testo, nelle illustrazioni, nell'introduzione. Con un'estetica che ricorda i manuali di zoologia sistematica del XIX secolo, questa serie di false incisioni realizzate in base alle annotazioni di naturalisti ed esploratori inserisce dettagli e nozioni che disorientano, e gioca con le convenzioni che fissano il limite tra realtà e finzione; il risultato è leggero e umoristico, ma soprattutto ludico!
