1930007047Various Photographers 1930. A group of 32 photographs 30 b&w and 2 color ranging in size from 4" x 6" to 7" x 9 1/2" 10 circa 1930's the rest 1957-1997 8 SIGNED signees to be determined. Credited photographers are: Ginger Gamage Forbes Jay Dee Ft. Worth TX V. Sladon NYC and John Lindquist. Some of the photos have writing verso identifying the subjects including one of Svetlova with Claudio Arrau and Mantovani. Several appear to be other noted people in the world of dance. And the 1930's photos several of which are signed appear to be friends of Svetlovas. Marina Svetlova 1923-2009 had a carrer in ballet that began as a child in 1931 and carried into the 1960's. She was a soloist with the Original Ballet Russe and a ballerina with the Metropolitan Opera Ballet. In 1969 she became a Professor of Ballet and chairwoman of the ballet department at Indiana University in Bloomington until 1992 gaining a reputation as a major educator in dance. No photographer place or date is noted and this is the photo used at the wiki site and listed in the U.S. Navy archives as from 1939 when the ship was undergoing sea trials. The Anderson saw extensive service in World War II for which she was awarded ten battle stars. Laid down to cardstock overall size 19 1/2" x 23" approx. A few small spots dirt shallow divots in the image a few dots of paste from old matte-mounting and some old silvering of the gelatin print at bottom margin visible in raking light. Construction battalion detachment was the one assigned to the Solomon Islands where they performed major tasks to create a major docking facility while fighting malaria and insects. This remarkable volume has hundreds of photographs that document the 1008th which was one of the larger battalions some on smaller islands had as few as sixty men. Laid in are papers of how the Association funds were spent on the printing engravings editing and other task in producing one of the most thorough Seabee volumes at the cost of $9480.50 in 1946. Only two copies are found on OCLC. Also laid in is a mimeographed list of the men and where they were located in the photographs of the entire battalion. A handsome copy near fine bound in brown and blue cloth lettered in brown and blue Owner's subscriber name stamped in gilt to upper board.
