From Wikipedia: "The Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy SOFIA is a joint project of NASA and the German Aerospace Center DLR to construct and maintain an airborne observatory. NASA awarded the contract for the development of the aircraft operation of the observatory and management of the American part of the project to the Universities Space Research Association USRA in 1996. The DSI Deutsches SOFIA Institut manages the German parts of the project which are primarily science and telescope related. SOFIA's telescope saw first light on May 26 2010. SOFIA is the successor to the Kuiper Airborne Observatory.SOFIA is based on a Boeing 747SP wide-body aircraft that has been modified to include a large door in the aft fuselage that can be opened in flight to allow a 2.5 meter diameter reflecting telescope access to the sky. This telescope is designed for infrared astronomy observations in the stratosphere at altitudes of about 41 000 feet about 12 km. SOFIA's flight capability allows it to rise above almost all of the water vapor in the Earth's atmosphere which blocks some infrared wavelengths from reaching the ground. At the aircraft's cruising altitude 85% of the full infrared range will be available. The aircraft can also travel to almost any point on the Earth's surface allowing observation from the northern and southern hemispheres. Once ready for use the expectation is for observing flights to be flown 3 or 4 nights a week for the next 20 years. SOFIA is now based at NASA's Dryden Aircraft Operations Facility at LA/Palmdale Regional Airport California while staff at NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View California operate the SOFIA Science Center where astronomical observation missions are planned for the flying observatory. The NASA logo reflected in SOFIAs 2.5-meter primary mirror. SOFIA uses a 2.5-meter reflector telescope which has an oversized 2.7 meter diameter primary mirror as is common with most large infrared telescopes. The optical system uses a Cassegrain reflector design with a parabolic primary mirror and a remotely configurable hyperbolic secondary. In order to fit the telescope into the fuselage the primary is shaped to an f-number as low as 1.3 while the resulting optical layout has an f-number of 19.7. A flat tertiary dichroic mirror is used to deflect the infrared part of the beam to the Nasmyth focus where it can be analyzed. An optical mirror located behind the tertiary mirror is used for a camera guidance system. The telescope looks out of a large door in the side of the fuselage near the airplane's tail and will initially carry nine instruments for infrared astronomy at wavelengths from 1 655 micrometres and high-speed optical astronomy at wavelengths from 0.3 1.1 micrometres. The main instruments are the FLITECAM a near infrared camera covering 1 5 micrometres; FORCAST covering the mid-infrared range of 5 40 micrometres and HAWC which spans the far infrared in the range 42 210 micrometres. The other four instruments include an optical photometer and infrared spectrometers with various spectral ranges. SOFIA s telescope is by far the largest ever to be placed in an aircraft. For each mission one interchangeable science instrument will be attached to the telescope. Two groups of general purpose instruments are available. In addition an investigator can also design and build a special purpose instrument. On April 17 2012 two upgrades to HAWC were selected by NASA to increase the field of view with new detector arrays and to add the capability of measuring the polarization of dust emission from celestial sources. The open cavity housing the telescope will be exposed to high-speed turbulent winds. In addition the vibrations and motions of the aircraft introduce observing difficulties. The telescope was designed to be very lightweight with a honeycomb shape milled into the back of the mirror and polymer composite material used for the telescope. Michael Okuda is an American graphic designer known for his work on Star Trek including designing computer user interfaces known as "okudagrams". His work for NASA's Project Constellation subsequently canceled included logos for the Ares booster the Altair lunar lander and the Orion spacecraft. Ares I was the crew launch vehicle that was being developed by NASA as part of the Constellation program. The name "Ares" refers to the Greek deity Ares who is identified with the Roman god Mars. Ares I was originally known as the "Crew Launch Vehicle" CLV. NASA planned to use Ares I to launch Orion the spacecraft intended for NASA human spaceflight missions after the Space Shuttle was retired in 2011. Ares I was to complement the larger uncrewed Ares V which was the cargo launch vehicle for Constellation. NASA selected the Ares designs for their anticipated overall safety reliability and cost-effectiveness. However the Constellation program including Ares I was canceled by U.S. president Barack Obama in October 2010 with the passage of his 2010 NASA authorization bill. In September 2011 NASA detailed the Space Launch System as its new vehicle for human exploration beyond Earth's orbit. Unlike the Space Shuttle where both crew and cargo were launched simultaneously on the same rocket the plans for Project Constellation outlined having two separate launch vehicles the Ares I and the Ares V for crew and cargo respectively. Having two separate launch vehicles allows for more specialized designs for the crew and heavy cargo launch rockets. The Ares I rocket was specifically being designed to launch the Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle. Orion was intended as a crew capsule similar in design to the Apollo program capsule to transport astronauts to the International Space Station the Moon and eventually Mars. Ares I might have also delivered some limited resources to orbit including supplies for the International Space Station or subsequent delivery to the planned lunar base. NASA selected Alliant Techsystems the builder of the Space Shuttle Solid Rocket Boosters as the prime contractor for the Ares I first stage. NASA announced that Rocketdyne would be the main subcontractor for the J-2X rocket engine on July 16 2007. NASA selected Boeing to provide and install the avionics for the Ares I rocket on December 12 2007. On August 28 2007 NASA awarded the Ares I Upper Stage manufacturing contract to Boeing. The upper stage of Ares I was to have been built at Michoud Aerospace Factory which was used for the Space Shuttle's External Tank and the Saturn V's S-IC first stage. The Ares V formerly known as the Cargo Launch Vehicle or CaLV was the planned cargo launch component of the canceled NASA Constellation program which was to have replaced the Space Shuttle after its retirement in 2011. Ares V was also planned to carry supplies for a human presence on Mars. The Ares V was to launch the Earth Departure Stage and Altair lunar lander for NASA's return to the Moon which was planned for 2019. It would also have served as the principal launcher for missions beyond the Earth-Moon system including the program's ultimate goal a crewed mission to Mars. The uncrewed Ares V would complement the smaller and human-rated Ares I rocket for the launching of the 4–6 person Orion spacecraft. Both rockets deemed safer than the then-current Space Shuttle would have employed technologies developed for the Apollo program the Shuttle program and the Delta IV EELV program. STS-135 ISS assembly flight ULF7 was the 135th and final mission of the American Space Shuttle program. It used the orbiter Atlantis and hardware originally processed for the STS-335 contingency mission which was not flown. STS-135 launched on July 8 2011 and landed on July 21 2011 following a one-day mission extension. The four-person crew was the smallest of any shuttle mission since STS-6 in April 1983. The mission's primary cargo was the Multi-Purpose Logistics Module MPLM Raffaello and a Lightweight Multi-Purpose Carrier LMC which were delivered to the International Space Station ISS. The flight of Raffaello marked the only time that Atlantis carried an MPLM. "We are hoping to fly a third shuttle mission in addition to STS-133 and STS-134 in June 2011 what everybody calls the launch-on-need mission. and that's really needed to buy down the risk for the development time for commercial cargo" Bolden said. The mission was included in NASA's 2011 authorization which was signed into law on October 11 2010 but funding remained dependent on a subsequent appropriations bill. United Space Alliance signed a contract extension for the mission along with STS-134; the contract contained six one-month options with NASA in order to support continuing operations. The federal budget approved in April 2011 called for US$5.5 billion for NASA's space operations division including the shuttle and space station programs. According to NASA the budget running through September 30 2011 ended all concerns about funding the STS-135 mission. On July 21 2011 NASA hosted an employee appreciation event outside OPF-2 with Atlantis parked. Cheryl Hurst the director of education and external relations at KSC spoke first and invited Susan Lambert to lead the crowd with the American national anthem. A pledge of allegiance followed from KSC children and NASA Administrator Charles Bolden and KSC Director Robert Cabana spoke to the shuttle program employees. During the event Rita Wilcoxson and Patricia Stratton were presented with highest NASA honors: the Distinguished Service Medal and the Distinguished Public Service Medal respectively. The citations on both were identical stating "for continuous outstanding leadership contributions provided to the nation's space shuttle program". STS-126 was the one hundred and twenty-fourth NASA Space Shuttle mission and twenty-second orbital flight of the Space Shuttle Endeavour OV-105 to the International Space Station ISS. The purpose of the mission referred to as ULF2 by the ISS program was to deliver equipment and supplies to the station to service the Solar Alpha Rotary Joints SARJ and repair the problem in the starboard SARJ that had limited its use since STS-120. STS-126 launched on 15 November 2008 at 00:55:39 UTC from Launch Pad 39A LC-39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center KSC with no delays or issues. Endeavour successfully docked with the station on 16 November 2008. After spending 15 days 20 hours 30 minutes and 30 seconds docked to the station during which the crew performed four spacewalks and transferred cargo the orbiter undocked on 28 November 2008. Due to poor weather at Kennedy Space Center Endeavour landed at Edwards Air Force Base on 30 November 2008 at 21:25:09 UTC. STS-126 included the Leonardo Multi-Purpose Logistics Module MPLM on its fifth spaceflight. Leonardo held over 14100 lbs of supplies and equipment. Among the items packed into the MPLM were two new crew quarters racks a second galley kitchen for the Destiny laboratory a second Waste and Hygiene Compartment WHC rack lavatory the advanced Resistive Exercise Device aRED two water reclamation racks spare hardware and new experiments. Also included in Leonardo was the General Laboratory Active Cryogenic ISS Experiment Refrigerator or GLACIER a double locker cryogenic freezer for transporting and preserving science experiments. The shuttle also carried irradiated turkey candied yams stuffing and dessert for a special Thanksgiving meal at the station as well as an Official Flight Kit with mementos for those who supported the astronauts and helped them complete their mission successfully. Also carried was a Lightweight MPESS Carrier LMC carrying a Flex Hose Rotary Coupler FHRC and returning a Nitrogen Assembly Tank from Quest for refurbishment. STS-126 was the only mission to land on the temporary runway 04 at Edwards Air Force Base as the main runway was completing refurbishment. The use of the temporary runway required new braking and rollout techniques that have never been used before as the runway is 2990 ft shorter than the normal runway. Since 1976 Spinoff has profiled technologies that benefit from NASA investment and expertise. These developments have transformed into commercial products and services that are used throughout daily life from your cell phone camera to the memory foam in your mattress. When Congress created NASA it mandated the agency disseminate its innovations as widely possible. To that end the Technology Transfer Program was created in 1964 and it has functioned ever since making it NASA’s longest continuously operated mission. Early publications about NASA inventions made available to the scientific and engineering communities resulted in feedback indicating a broad interest in the private sector in adapting NASA technology for commercial uses. As products began to emerge NASA began preparing annual reports on these successes to present at congressional budget hearings. Spinoff has been published in a four-color editionand it has been released every year since 1976. All together since its first edition NASA has shared the stories of more 2000 products and services that began as or have benefited from NASA technology. STS-132 ISS assembly flight ULF4 was a NASA Space Shuttle mission during which Space Shuttle Atlantis docked with the International Space Station on May 16 2010. STS-132 was launched from the Kennedy Space Center on May 14 2010. The primary payload was the Russian Rassvet Mini-Research Module along with an Integrated Cargo Carrier-Vertical Light Deployable ICC-VLD. Atlantis landed at the Kennedy Space Center on May 26 2010. STS-132 was initially scheduled to be the final flight of Atlantis provided that the STS-335/STS-135 Launch On Need rescue mission would not be needed. However in February 2011 NASA declared that the final mission of Atlantis and of the Space Shuttle program STS-135 would be flown regardless of the funding situation. Also on board Atlantis was a 4-inch long wood sample of Sir Isaac Newton's apple tree. The piece from the original tree that supposedly inspired Newton's theory of gravity along with a picture of Newton were taken into orbit by astronaut Piers Sellers. The wood is part of the collection of the Royal Society archives in London and was returned there following the flight. Additionally a flag from Clarkson University Potsdam New York flew on board shuttle Atlantis. It was there in honor of STS-132 lead shuttle flight director Michael L. Sarafin who is an alumnus of the Clarkson University. The STS-132 mission patch was designed by NASA artist Sean Collins working with astronaut Garrett Reisman. The patch shows Atlantis flying towards a sunset landing with the names of the STS-132 astronauts around the border. During the standard post-flight inspection of Atlantis a United Space Alliance inspector found a STS-132 mission decal accompanied by an inscription "The first last flight of Atlantis left Earth on 14 May 2010 from Pad 39A" together with the crew's signatures. The worker had found it tucked away on the upper side of Locker A-16 while scanning the area with a mirror. Moreover he said the note must have been written in orbit since otherwise the author would have had to stand on their head to write it. At the time the note was written STS-132 was the last planned mission of Atlantis. However one further mission was ultimately approved for the shuttle: STS-135 which was to be the last flight of both Atlantis and the Space Shuttle program. STS-129 ISS assembly flight ULF3 was a NASA Space Shuttle mission to the International Space Station ISS. Atlantis was launched on November 16 2009 at 14:28 EST and landed at 09:44 EST on November 27 2009 on runway 33 at the Kennedy Space Center's Shuttle Landing Facility. It was also the last Shuttle mission of the 2000s. STS-129 focused on staging spare components outside the station. The 11-day flight included three spacewalks. The payload bay carried two large ExPRESS Logistics Carriers holding two spare gyroscopes two nitrogen tank assemblies two pump modules an ammonia tank assembly a spare latching end effector for the station's robotic arm a spare trailing umbilical system for the Mobile Transporter and a high-pressure gas tank. STS-129 was the first flight of an ExPRESS Logistics Carrier. The STS-129 mission patch was designed by Tim Gagnon and Dr. Jorge Cartes. The unusual shape of the patch resulted from the crew's desire for the patch to signify the mission's payload two ExPRESS Logistics Carriers providing equipment ensuring the longevity of the ISS. The insignia incorporates a number of design elements not typically incorporated into a single patch: the Sun Moon Mars NASA's astronaut symbol the ISS the Shuttle orbiter and the continental United States. The 13 stars on the patch represent the crewmembers' children and the Moon and Mars represent the future of space exploration. The names of the crew members are denoted on the outer band of the patch. The primary payloads were the Express Logistics Carriers designated ELC-1 and ELC-2 for the International Space Station ISS. The units carried a variety of tools and equipment designed to augment and enhance experimentation aboard ISS. Docking between Atlantis and ISS occurred on November 18 2009. Undocking occurred on November 25 2009. There were three spacewalks during the mission. The first spacewalk was conducted on November 19 2009 and lasted 6 hours 37 minutes. Astronauts Foreman and Satcher installed a spare antenna and a bracket for ammonia lines outside ISS. They also performed maintenance activities on the ISS Japanese robotic arm. The second spacewalk was conducted on November 21 2009 and lasted 6 hours 8 minutes. Astronauts Foreman and Bresnik installed the Grappling Adaptor to On-Orbit Railing GATOR to the ISS Columbus Laboratory plus an additional ham radio antenna. They also installed an antenna for wireless helmet camera video and relocated the Floating Potential Measurement Unit which takes electrical measurements outside ISS. The third spacewalk was conducted on November 23 2009 and lasted 5 hours 42 minutes. Astronauts Satcher and Bresnik installed an oxygen filled High Pressure Gas Tank on the ISS Quest Airlock. The International Space Station ISS is the largest modular space station in low Earth orbit. The project involves five space agencies: the United States' NASA Russia's Roscosmos Japan's JAXA Europe's ESA and Canada's CSA. The ownership and use of the space station is established by intergovernmental treaties and agreements. The station serves as a microgravity and space environment research laboratory in which scientific research is conducted in astrobiology astronomy meteorology physics and other fields. The ISS is suited for testing the spacecraft systems and equipment required for possible future long-duration missions to the Moon and Mars. The Space Shuttle was a partially reusable low Earth orbital spacecraft system operated by NASA the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Its official program name was Space Transportation System STS taken from a 1969 plan for a system of reusable spacecraft of which it was the only item funded for development. Operational missions launched numerous satellites conducted science experiments in orbit and participated in construction and servicing of the International Space Station ISS. The first of four orbital test flights occurred in 1981 leading to operational flights beginning in 1982. From 1981 to 2011 a total of 135 missions were flown all launched from Kennedy Space Center KSC in Florida. During that time period the fleet logged 1322 days 19 hours 21 minutes and 23 seconds of flight time. The longest orbital flight of the Shuttle was STS-80 at 17 days 15 hours while the shortest flight was STS-51-L at one minute 13 seconds when the Space Shuttle Challenger broke apart during launch. The cold morning shrunk an O-Ring on the right Solid Rocket Booster causing the external fuel tank to explode. The shuttles docked with Russian space station Mir nine times and visited the ISS thirty-seven times. The highest altitude apogee achieved by the shuttle was 386 milrd when deploying the Hubble Space Telescope. The program flew a total of 355 people representing 16 countries and with 852 total shuttle fliers. The Kennedy Space Center served as the landing site for 78 missions while 54 missions landed at Edwards Air Force Base in California and one mission landed at White Sands New Mexico. The first orbiter built Enterprise was used for atmospheric flight tests ALT but future plans to upgrade it to orbital capability were ultimately canceled. Four fully operational orbiters were initially built: Columbia Challenger Discovery and Atlantis. Challenger and Columbia were destroyed in mission accidents in 1986 and 2003 respectively killing a total of fourteen astronauts. A fifth operational orbiter Endeavour was built in 1991 to replace Challenger. The Space Shuttle was retired from service upon the conclusion of STS-135 by Atlantis on 21 July 2011.
