Mille salme di soldati morti in guerra sono state trasferite, in commovente corteo, dal Cimitero comunale alla cripta del Tempio votivo, loro definitiva dimora. Ogni spoglia era contenuta in una cassetta portata a mano da congiunti, da soldati, da privati cittadini." "Una tragica lotta notturna s'e svolta sopra un piroscafo britannico nelle acque di Hong-Kong. Trenta pirati, camuffati da passeggeri, si sono precipitati sul ponte di comando per impadronirsi della nave. Esasperati per la resistenza opposta dall'equipaggio, hanno cosparso di petrolio e incendiato la tolda. Tra i bagliori dell'incendio la lotta è continuata per molte ore sino all'arrivo di un cacciatorpediniere inglese. Vi sono stati cento morti.".
