Half page engraving 15 x 34 cm and a cameo engraving of Sir John Bowring with decorative vignettes on a single newspaper leaf with incomplete associated text biographical note spots of browning and edge-wear lower edge trimmed not affecting the caption but in very good condition. Engravings prepared for "The Illustrated London News" on the announcement of the British Governor Sir John Bowring 1729-1872 and published two months before his arrival in April 1854. Although a brilliant man his was a turbulent tenure ending in1857 following his wife's death from arsenic poisoning in what became known as the Esing Bakery incident an attempted poisoning of the European population in Hong Kong during the Second Opium War. <br> <br>From the Estate of the late collector and scholar Arthur Hacker with his pencilled catalogue mark in the upper margin. . Twenty photos each mounted on a black card size: 9 x 7 cm. image size: 8 x 6.5 cm. each is black and white hand-colored very good clean sharp images no fading 2 photos on each card front/back. A group of 10 cards with 20 photographs lightly laid down on a black card showing twenty views of old and most famous "TIGER BALM GARDEN" "AW BOON HAW MANSION." . The most famous visitor's site in Hong Kong from 1935 was the celebrated "TIGER BALM GARDEN" also known as the "AW BOON HAW MANSION." It was a three-dimensional sculpture garden showing various Buddhist aspects of life death happiness sadness joy evil and justice. Typical concepts in Chinese Buddhism and Confucianism. THE HISTORY: In 1935 the landscaped garden was built at a cost of HK$16 million. It was one of the most favorite and popular sites in Hong Kong for seventy years. The Garden was demolished for redevelopment in 2004 thus for ever TIGER BALM GARDEN vanished for ever. SUBJECT OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS: This miniature photograph collection shows some twenty hand-colored original photographs of the Garden its lovely pavilion and scenes of Buddhas eight beautiful & very naked women view of the Kwai Fei taking a bath also more nude ladies ! Kan Chin Pavilion two pagodas lakes Buddhist monuments Buddhist heaven & hell panoramic view of the gardens & mansion half-nude mermaid Fat Buddha skinny Ancestral Buddha "Tiger-Balm Tiger" and many others ! . Each photograph has a Chinese and English caption at the bottom margin. Each photograph is 8.4 x 6.4 cm. including the margin. The photo image is 8.1 x 6 cm. PHOTO CONDITION: Each miniature black & white photo was hand-painted and tinted. Each photo is lightly layed down on the black card. The photographs are all in excellent condition no fading or demerits. There is some of the usual rubbing to the black card but this does not affect the photos at all. REFERENCES . unknown

QUITE SCARCE ! This is an obscure and rarely found complete panoramic view of the great southern city of Canton Guangzhou on four consecutive color postcards. The panorama shows at the top far left printed in red ink: "PANORAMA OF CANTON" followed by "RAILWAY TO FATSHAN" "SHEK-WAI-TONG" "PUN-TONG" " WHITE CLOUD HILL" "FRENCH CATHEDRAL" "SHAMEEN" "RIVER STEAMBOAT WHARF" "FERRY PIERS" "CHAU-TAU-TSUI" "HONAM AND FONG CHUEN." THE COMPLETE RARE SET OF FOUR COLOR POSTCARDS OF CANTON: This is seldom found complete with all four cards connected. Our RARE example is complete as issued. A lovely view of Canton city with two rivers meandering through the city. . This panorama covers the whole city and the rivers with several kinds of shipping. CONDITION: The four attached postcards are in excellent condition with bright color and no fading. There is some of the usual wear in the folds where a small bit of the color is lacking. 1957157747Hong Kong: Rotary Club of Kowloon 1957. A charming souvenir of the Rotary Club of Kowloon's annual fundraising bash for 1957 now hard to find in commerce and unrecorded in institutional collections. In the 1950s the club's balls were lavish affairs attracting everyone from the British governor downwards and garnering significant attention in the local press. The many adverts and messages from its commercial sponsors showcase a bygone era of Hong Kong business. Formed in 1948 in the wake of the Japanese occupation the club raised $350000 in its first ten years to fund community projects and scholarships. According to the menu printed in this programme this year members tucked into fruit cocktail consomme royale fillet of sole caprice Spanish-style roast chicken and pear belle Helene while the entertainment included dances impressions and bongo drumming.
