1924157518Hong Kong: Honkon nipposha 1924. Only a single copy found institutionally First edition first printing of this exceptionally scarce Japanese-language guide to Hong Kong with plates showing views of the harbour city centre and Peak Tram. WorldCat records just a single copy at the Bukkyo University Library. This guide was published by a Japanese newspaper founded in the territory in 1909. It includes adverts for banks beers shipping lines and trading companies as well as a full list of important businesses and amenities enumerated in Japanese and English. Sections deal with climate population diplomatic buildings business opportunities and the usual useful information needed by travellers. A final page lists the travelling time and distance between Hong Kong and major Chinese and international ports including Macao Shanghai Singapore and London. A second expanded edition was published in 1928; today this is equally rare. Duodecimo. With 4 blue photographic half-tone plates pp. 15 adverts many printed in colour. Original red card wrappers title on front cover in black. Wrappers well-preserved with minor chip to front cover and spine sunned with small split at foot a little toning and skinning internally imprint page consolidated at gutter plates and adverts bright. 1967158680Hong Kong: Ta Kung Pao 1967. Hongkong has been turned into a hell for its Chinese inhabitants First edition first printing scarce in this condition of this charged and sometimes graphic bilingual photobook published by the pro-Beijing newspaper Ta Kung Pao in the wake of the Hong Kong riots and the burning of the British mission in Beijing in August 1967. Despite all the bluster privately Mao and other communist leaders were extremely keen to see the territory an important trading partner remain in British hands. Following the explosive beginning of the Cultural Revolution in China left-wing propagandists in Hong Kong infiltrated labour disputes and protests over conditions to fan the flames of anti-British sentiment. The present work presents dozens of photographs to show how patriotic residents have "armed themselves with the great thought of Mao Tse-tung" in a struggle against "anti-national oppression" foreword. A final section boasts of the global support for these actions including from London's very own Finsbury Communist Association. The present work was issued in two variants of the wrappers with no discernible priority. The front cover of the other design is lettered "The Upheaval in Hong Kong" in white against the same red-drab colour scheme. Short quarto. Photographic half-tones throughout several pages with quotations from Mao printed in red sepia vignette on first leaf. Text in Chinese and English. Original card wrappers titles to spine in red and black front cover lettered in white and black against red and drab horizontal bands. Wrappers well-preserved moderate creasing and marking loss at head of spine only slightly affecting Chinese title text block square and holding firm clean internally with light bumping to lower corner of text block. 190151358Hong Kong 1901. Three quarto manuscript letters totaling 22 pages and approx. 6000 words on life in Hong Kong as an American expat. Clean and legible. The author "Katheryn" writes to her friend Jesse in Oregon describing her daily routine and life in Hong Kong with her husband Tom who works there. "Hong Kong is the most beautiful place I have ever seen. I cannot describe it to you but will send you some Kodak pictures." Her writing is rather slangy and telegraphic but she manages to convey a sense of her life and times. "We have a rickshaw of our own now Tom bought it last week. It is a nice one made in Japan and better than the ones they make here. Have two coolies so they can drag Tom up the hill. One runs behind and pushes. A tailor is making their uniforms. I chose kahki sic trimmed with red for them Will also have the monogram TWH in red letters on them. People here think you are somebody if your coolies are in uniform." She goes on at length in this manner explaining that the chair coolies necessary to negotiate the many steps in Hong Kong do not like Tom because he weighs 200 pounds. She on the other hand goes where she pleases. She discusses her wardrobe all white clothing and talks about clothing and Chinese tailors and about friends of her husband's - other expats. She describes their rooms a bargain at $160 per month. Then "Although the Plague is usually worse here in summer it seems now that there are fewer cases than there were a few weeks ago. I go through the Plague district that is where it is the worst Wauchai a suburb nearly every day." She also talks about ships currently in the harbor "trouble in the north" and the Hong Kong regiment. We gather that she's been married just a year and that her husband pampers her but that she misses her friend Jessie and is a little homesick. The first twelve-page letter was written between June 19 and 25. The second a two-pager sending condolences for a death in Jessie's family was written August 27 1900. The third letter eight pages was written in 1901. In it Kathryn talks about cameras and mentions their trip to Canton and Macao. unknown

Following the explosive beginning of the Cultural Revolution in China mainland Chinese operatives in Hong Kong infiltrated labour disputes and demonstrations over conditions to fan the flames of anti-British sentiment. A souvenir of pre-war Hong Kong including views of the city by night Victoria & Kowloon the residence of Sir Robert Ho Tung Wanchai and the ferry pier. Photographs also show junks and beach-goers Hong Kong University and individual residents. The publisher manufactured premium cigars for the Hong Kong and Filipino markets. Managed by Carl Ingenohl it had a factory of some 310000 square feet near Nathan Road and Soy Street. Landscape quarto. With 15 captioned photogravure plates. Original grey card wrappers front cover printed in gilt photogravure of harbour laid down within blind panel. 1969182303London: D Survey Ministry of Defence 1969. Classified "restricted": a cartographic representation issued following the 1967 riots of British military plans for securing the New Territories during civil disturbances or in the face of Chinese incursion across the Lo Wu border. The points are concentrated on inland through routes the coast west of Tsuen Wan and the railway line linking Kowloon to Guangzhou. The map was compiled by D Survey the branch of the Ministry of Defence tasked with creating maps for military use in conjunction with Far East Land Forces and 84 Survey Squadron. Colour lithographed map 640 x 770 mml recto with large plan of New Territories and legend verso with smaller maps of Sheung Shui & Fanling Yuen Long Tai Po and Tsuen Wan as well as small legend. Folding away to 170 x 205 mm. Small contemporary ink annotation near Yuen Long map. Scuffing some creasing where incorrectly refolded foxing on panels exposed when folded: very good. unknown

First edition first printing including the text of the ordinance authorizing the construction of the Hong Kong tramway and outlining its specifications. A company was founded the same year and the first line from Happy Valley and Causeway Bay to Shau Kei Wan was laid in 1903. Full service began in mid-1904. Governpr Sir Henry Blake took leave for almost all of 1902 and authority was exercised in his name by the lieutenant-governor Major-General Sir William Gascoigne 1844-1926 a hero of the Boxer Uprising and the 1899 Six-Day War in the New Territories. 1961176992Hong Kong: Chinese Importers' & Exporters' Association 1961. The 1961 edition of this long-running handbook offering a snapshot of the colony's commercial life and major businesses. In the 1950s following the UN trade embargo on China Hong Kong shifted towards export-led growth in particular the manufacture of textiles and plastic goods. Between 1951 and 1961 exports as a percentage of GDP grew from 30 to 80 percent. Octavo. Tables and advertisements a few colour throughout; section titles printed on green paper; text in Chinese. Early edition of this attractive pictorial issued to patrons of Wanchai's Gloucester Hotel which opened in 1933 and offered the guests the very latest modern conveniences and luxuries. This work was first published while Sir William Peel was still governor. The present copy states below his portrait on page 26 that he retired in May 1935. Quarto. With 15 tipped-in colour plates folded leaf of gilt-flecked red paper with Chinese-language announcement from publisher illustrations in text some text printed in red; publisher's printed correction slip amending advertisement on p. 43. 1960188504Hong Kong: around late 1960s. An informative group of images showing Trench taking the salute march-pasts by dog and riot units female officers on parade and a ride-past by a motorcycle division. Other photographs capture Trench pinning decorations on individual officers the arrival of senior personnel and music and marching. Completing the collection is a photograph of Peter Dixon Lennett 1938-1997 a member of the force from 1964 to 1991 receiving the baton of honour from Lieutenant-General Sir Denis O'Connor Commander of British Forces in Hong Kong during his passing out ceremony. Lennett graduated as Best Inspector of the Intake and was commended on multiple occasions during his distinguished career. His accompanying business card identifies him as a force training officer at the training school in Wong Chuk Hang Aberdeen. Together 35 gelatin silver professional photographs 125 x 170 mm and larger gelatin silver photograph 210 x 160 mm latter with South China Morning Post wet-stamp and near-contemporary ink manuscript caption on verso. Photographs bowed but mostly bright and unfaded a little silver mirroring: a very good collection. unknown

1932185152Hong Kong: K. A. J. Chotirmall & Co. c.1932. A brochure issued by a major Sindhi trading concern. Founded in Jakarta in 1875 the firm entered the Hong Kong market in 1888 as part of a programme of expansion across Asia. It built a reputation on trading textiles but branched out into furniture ivory and porcelain wares and fans. This copy is accompanied by a nine-page pamphlet issued by the company around the same time and listing the types of goods it exports. The contents match the last few leaves of the brochure. Quarto. Bravado. threw its head in the air Sole edition and printing of this authoritative reference recording horses jockeys winnings and course information. The notes on "racing incidents" attached to each meet provide much humorous reading recording for example the stripping of second place from Prince Lucky Joyful Heart proving unruly before the starting gun and King Kong cantering riderless through the saddling paddock. The six sections record race results finishes by distance jockey performance over the season horse records winning owners and winning trainers. Octavo. The first recipe is attributed to the sadly unidentifiable wife of Eduardo Rosal who was appointed the first Filipino consul general in the colony in 1958. The YWCA branch was founded in 1920. As Grantham in office 1947-57 writes "the booklet's cover symbolises the Hong Kong story. The harbour is the basic origin of the Colony on which its prosperity was founded; the fine modern buildings in the foreground are evidence of that prosperity while the figure of the cheerful Chinese labourer typifies the hundreds of thousands who have been attracted to Hong Kong by the opportunities it affords and the promise that in reward for labour there will always be something for the rice bowl" p. 3.
