Covers damp damaged with some showing mould staining string on first volume broken in one place but binding still sound very occasional light spotting contents. Lower edge of all volumes and upper edge of 3 volumes are titled in ink. Although the condition of the bindings are poor the maps and woodblock printed text are very good. A Japanese edition of Jūhasshiryaku 十八史略 Shi ba shi lue in pinyin with extra notes added by Confucian scholar Fujisawa Nangaku 藤澤南岳 1842-1920. Rackemann in ink on cover and in small pencil script at the base '11/9/73 Goodspeeds' the noted Boston Book and Print Seller.<br /> <br /> 9 cartoon series in the original envelope with story by Bret Harte and cartoons by Joseph Hull. Numbered cartoons with text below depict a card game between 2 western miners "Truthful James" and "Bill Nye" and a Chinese "Ah Sin" in which the Chinese is more proficient at cheating at cards and for which he is beaten by a mob. With the line ""Can this be We are ruined by cheap Chinese labor". <br /> <br /> 5 x 7 1/4 in cards in original envelope with ink inscription with a small bookseller's stamp laid in "Burnton's 92 Fourth Av" and with an inscription at the upper right 'Charlie Rackemann from Uncle Ell'. Detailed map prepared for the Lyon Chamber of Commerce Mission to China under the direction of a young Henri Brenier 1867-1962 with the purpose of advancing French colonial expansion and shoring up the interests of the dominant Lyon silk trade. <br> <br>The map shows the principal centres of population production waterways roads telegraph lines and railroads togther with the centres of production and distribution for coal iron tin gold and silver opium tea rice sugar peanuts cinnamon wool medicinal plants and leather. The trade mission was organized following the Treaty of Shimonoseki and the end of the Sino-Japanese War: the Chamber of Commerce of Lyon understood that end of this war would signal a profound economic development and change. . NOTE: the first half of this volume was used as a scrapbook and has at least 32 engravings of scenes military men and literary person glued to the pages not affecting the map which is bound in place. <br/><br/>This map is a variant of the original map which appeared in the third volume of THE CHINESE REPOSITORY. That map measures 14 1/4 x 18 1/2 inches and has titles in Chinese ideograms and in English. THIS MAP has names in English or the English equivalent of the Chinese identifications. This map accompanies an article "MIscellany" with sub-title " Canton and the River Tigris " another section of which is "The Physical and Moral evils inflicted on the Chinese by a Christian people for the love of gain". More of the entry discusses at length the problems of opium as previously described in the Calcutta Christian Observer with supporting remarks. Rev. Bridgman was the editor of THE CHINESE REPOSITORY. He was the first American Protestant Christian missionary sent to China and America's first Sinologist. NOTE: This volume also includes missionary reports by Rev.
