Richly coloured and beautiful large plate with flowers and birds from "Ornements de la Chine: Recueil de Dessins Pour l'Art et l'Industrie" A Collection of Designs for Art and Industry one of the most attractive 19th century books of design of which only 500 copies were issued. This work was a seminal influence on the introduction of Chinoiserie and Islamic decorative art to French artists and craftsmen. In 1863 the authors Eugène Collinot and Adalbert de Beaumont founded their own faience factory in the Bois de Boulogne specializing in wares inspired by Persian and Iznik pottery. see "Grove Dictionary of Art". . C’est le code civil des chinois. Il fut traduit pour la première fois en anglais (paru en 1810) par Sir Stauton (1737 - 1801), un médecin qui partit en 1762 pour les Indes Occidentales où il se lia d’amitié avec lord Macartney, gouverneur de Grenade. Celui-ci le prit comme secrétaire et l’emmena à Madras et le chargea de missions importantes. Revenu à Londres en 1785, Staunton accompagna comme secrétaire de légation, de 1792 à 1794, le célèbre ambassadeur de Lord Macartney en Chine.- Cordier 546-547 - Lust. Colour woodblock print 37.2 x 25.3 cms the sheet a little age-toned a spot of browning at the foot and a pinhole in the upper margin but the image unaffected very good condition. This colour woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitora is an excellent example of Yokohama-e Yokohama Prints which were very popular in Japan after the country was opened in the mid-19th century. Yokohama was one of the trading ports with the outside world and many foreigners were residing in the area. The Yokohama-e was very similar to the Nagasaki-e Nagasaki Prints and depicted people and cultures which were foreign to the Japanese. Utagawa Yoshitora was active between the end of Edo Period to the mid-Meiji Period and produced numerous Nishiki-e prints including Yokohama-e in his career. He was regarded as one of the top Nishiki-e artists around that time. <br> <br>In this print a Western man is strolling outside with his dog and a Mongolian boy who carries an umbrella for him. The man is observing something in the distance and about to jot down something in his notebook with a pen which he holds in his right hand. Uniformly bound in textured embossed pattern limp softcovers manuscript titles punch-sewn at gutter margins wear soiling some worming through fore-edges text in portions thumbing to fore-edges soiling lower 2/3 of front title leaf stating “Forbidden from Sale†torn away still a G- reference set of this noted rarity. First edition of the author’s “second series†recounting further events in the First Opium War fought between Great Britain and China in 1839-1842. The text and illustrations vividly stressed the terrible effects of opium on Qing Dynasty China and the brave Chinese resisting the British military. Buttressed with striking illustrations by Utagawa Sadahide 1807-1879/79 which depict such incidents as Chinese fire-boats approaching a British warship; a captured spy; Chenshi the Monk putting up a valiant fight; a Chinese Woman warrior fighting the British; a Taiwanese fort sinking a British Warship; the fall of Zhenhai; French diplomatic ships arriving on the Yangtze and even an omen appearing in the heavens. In addition there are a number of woodblock prints depicting British cannons mortars and firearms employed during the Opium Wars. The Kaigai Shinwa printed on Mino paper was written in a sensationalistic and simple style with Japanese syllabaries attached to all Chinese characters and intended as a cautionary tale advising Japan and other Asian countries of the pitfalls of foreign invaders and intervention just four years before the appearance of Perry’s squadron in Tokyo Bay. Mineta Fuko 1817-1883 was thrown into prison for having published the work without official consent and later after he was released was deprived of the right to live in Edo Kyoto or Osaka -- the santo kamae tri-urban banishment and many of the volumes were seized and others were censored or removed.
