1945175494China: 1945. A rare series of photographs taken after Japan's unconditional surrender when the OSS launched eight operational missions to rescue POWS across east and south-east Asia. Two of the images show Lee Beom-Seok a resistance fighter and the first prime minister of South Korea who worked closely with OSS personnel in China. The first images capture a team of US soldiers disembarking from a C47 cargo plane. In one photograph taken at night Lee stands alongside soldiers in the uniform of Chiang Kai-Shek's National Revolution Army. A long series of photographs shows smiling internees and their liberators while two at the end of the album show OSS personnel in discussion. At least one photograph appears to show Clyde Bailey Sargent 1909-1981 a sinologist who joined the OSS as a civilian and undertook intelligence-gathering missions in China and India. Later in the war he served with the Flying Tigers in a military capacity joining the CIA after 1945. His short obituary is pasted on the inner rear cover. Square octavo photo album. 1926145415Shanghai: California Directory Association and the Shanghai Times 1926. A well-preserved example of this scarce guide for American visitors to China recorded in just four institutions on WorldCat. Produced during a golden age of East Asian travel this convenient compendium lists places of interest and suggested itineraries for major cities alongside dozens of advertisements for hotels curio shops and luxury goods. Foreign tourists in East Asia were not a new sight in the early 20th century but the construction of railway lines from the late 19th century caused a dramatic increase in the ease and possibilities of travel. In Hong Kong Shanghai and other large cities the number of businesses catering to the foreign tourist market ballooned with many listed in this guide. Inside travellers could find information on the Hong Kong Hotel and the famous Grand Hotel des Wagon-Lits in Peking's Legation Quarter as well advertisements for firms as varied as the Hong Kong and Kowloon Taxicab Company the outfitters Aux Chic Parisien U. B. Pilsener Beer of Shanghai Strehlneek's Chinese Art Studio and Clerici Bedoni & Co. importers of fine Italian wines. Two pages of pidgin English phrases are provided to help travellers ask for the "Sing-song house" the theatre or "Smelleum water" Eau de Cologne. The California Directory Association produced a number of tourist guides for travellers to the Far East all of which are now rare. Duodecimo. With 2 folding maps of central Hong Kong and Shanghai half-tone illustrations in text advertisements throughout. Original red card wrappers title and Chinese dragon to front cover in black. Wrappers lightly creased with small chip to lower tip of front cover internally clean and bright larger folding map with small closed tear partially tape repaired to verso. 1922174979Hong Kong Weihaiwei Canton and at sea: 1922-27. An album compiled by an officer likely involved with the maintenance and testing of battleships and submarines interspersing photographs taken while on duty with his tourist snapshots and shots of friends. Nine images show vessels from the China Station's fleet of L-Class submarines being put through their paces. The photographs are arranged roughly chronologically and although many are captioned and some show the officer he is unidentified. It commences in 1922 and seven photographs taken onboard the battlecruiser HMS Repulse in the Mediterranean show Repulse and HMS Hood the largest ship in the Royal Navy undergoing full power trials. Photographs taken in China a few years later continue the theme. During the 1920s L-Class submarines served on the station as the Fourth Submarine Flotilla and the album contains photographs of HMS L3 and L4 during trials at Hong Kong in 1926 as well as diving trials for HMS L5. Two photographs taken atop the main body of HMS L2 show it forging ahead at full power. He also records the process of changing the submarine's propellor. A range of images document life in Weihaiwei the base from which British naval power radiated in north China. He has the chance to visit HMS Titania a submarine depot ship and he relaxes at the United Services Club recording the appearance of the grounds and the view from the club out to sea. There is time to play some golf on nearby Liugong Island and visit the Temple of the Four Winds and the Beehive Tombs. He captures for posterity the naval boat race including the "veteran officers' skiff" pulled by Captain later Admiral Robert Henry Taunton Raikes 1885-1953 commander of the Fourth Submarine Flotilla. The sights and sounds of south China similarly beckon. In Canton he visits the waterfront and temples and photographs goods being taken to market and images show him holidaying with friends at Repulse Bay in Hong Kong. Interspersed are other glimpses onto life at sea: Hood's quarterdeck rigged for dancing; a group of pirates captured after they seized and torched the steamship SS Sunning near Hong Kong in late 1926; and cricket on the deck of a cruise ship. Landscape quarto album buff card covers tied with light brown cord through punch holes front cover with black embossed letters within blind-stamped panel 18 stiff card leaves full with 181 tipped-in gelatin silver photographs most c. 85 x 60 mm to 115 x 160 mm short pencil and ink captions. A Shanghai expat's otherwise unrecorded tribute to his goddaughter inscribed by the author on the first blank "To Irene from Stewart with all good wishes. 22nd October 1919 Shanghai". G. Stewart Jones "G.S.J." in the imprint ran the Shanghai office of the chemicals giant Brunner Mond & Co. Jones composed his poems in Shanghai Tianjin on the Yangtze River and in England. His collection is a rare surviving example of the bespoke luxury printing and bookbinding service provided by Kelly & Walsh Asia's largest publisher-printer. Octavo pp. 16. Contents printed in blue. 1933144201Moscow: Parti noe izd-vo 1933. First edition first printing uncommon institutionally of this widely cited Russian research publication on the soviets controlled by the Chinese Communist Party in the early 1930s. It reflects the Kremlin's keen paternalistic interest in the development of China's communist movement and stamping Comintern authority on Mao and other party leaders. Worldcat records just ten copies. After the collapse of the Chinese Communist Party's CCP First United Front with the Kuomintang in 1927 the remnants of the CCP retreated to rural areas and formed a number of soviets as experiments in cultivating a socialist revolution in the countryside. These base areas including Jingangshan and Jiangxi-Fujian became the birthplaces of the rurally-focused ideology that would eventually deliver the whole of China for the CCP. Historical research continues to reveal the Soviet Union's extensive involvement in the CCP's early growth. In 1930 Stalin and other Comintern figures had been instrumental in convincing a wing of the CCP leadership to abandon hopes of forming urban soviets and instead focus on cultivating support among the peasantry. By 1933 having grown to distrust Mao's leadership Moscow again altered the shape of the party by sending Bo Gu one of the "28 Bolsheviks" and Otto Braun to take charge of the Jiangxi soviet and manage military operations against Kuomintang encirclement campaigns. Moscow needed access to the most up-to-date information on the base areas. The present work contains a 100-page introduction to the Chinese soviets co-authored by the Russian Sinologist Evgenii Sigismundovich Iolk 1900-1937 who was ideally qualified on account of having been in China in 1926-27 as a member of Borodin's staff specialising in agrarian issues. During this period Iolk had had a front row seat to Mao's early attempts to organise the peasantry. In 1932 he began working in the intelligence section of the General Staff of the Red Army in which role he undoubtedly enjoyed access to the latest information on developments in China. Octavo. Uniformly bound in original printed wrappers some scuffing soiling edgewear occasional light foxing still a VG- uncut & unopened presentation set inscribed and presented by Honore Lantenois & Henri Mansuy to Prof. Marcellin Boule 1861-1942 French geologist palaeontologist and physical anthropologist who reconstructed the first complete Neanderthal skeleton in France. First edition presentation set of this massive first installment in the Geological Survey of Southeast Asia begun in 1908 documenting the biostratigraphy of the Yunnan Region which was awarded the Tchihatchef Prize of the French Academy of Sciences. Much of this survey work was done during the building of the Hanoi to Yunnan-fou Kunming railroad which was built by the French to exploit the tremendous mineral wealth of Yunnan. The Director of the Department of Natural Resources for France in Vietnam was Honore Lantenois 1863-1940 who worked for years with Henri Mansuy 1857-1937 and sent him back to France several times to study palaeontology at the School of Natural Resources Ecole des Mines. Lantenois recruited Jacques Deprat 1880-1935 in 1908 -- at the time a brilliant palaeontologist -- to conduct an ambitious program mapping the geology of Indochina and neighboring areas. All three men became involved in the notorious Deprat Affair which resulted in Mansuy accusing Deprat to Lantenois in 1917 that Deprat had used a few European-sources trilobites among his fossil specimens from Indochina and Yunnan. This accusation rested on the distinction that the suspect trilobites were not just similar in nature to others found in Europe but the matrix they were embedded may have originated from Europe. Although nearly 90 years later it would be determined that the trilobite fauna discovered by Deprat indicated that the Yunnan had occupied a location adjacent to Bohemia originally in the early Palaeozoic period; the French scientific community condemned Deprat at the time stripped him of his degrees and posts and forced him to leave the field. A complete set including the Atlas is quite scarce. First edition of the author’s “second series†recounting further events in the First Opium War fought between Great Britain and China in 1839-1842. The text and illustrations vividly stressed the terrible effects of opium on Qing Dynasty China and the brave Chinese resisting the British military. Buttressed with striking illustrations by Utagawa Sadahide 1807-1879/79 which depict such incidents as Chinese fire-boats approaching a British warship; a captured spy; Chenshi the Monk putting up a valiant fight; a Chinese Woman warrior fighting the British; a Taiwanese fort sinking a British Warship; the fall of Zhenhai; French diplomatic ships arriving on the Yangtze and even an omen appearing in the heavens. In addition there are a number of woodblock prints depicting British cannons mortars and firearms employed during the Opium Wars. The Kaigai Shinwa printed on Mino paper was written in a sensationalistic and simple style with Japanese syllabaries attached to all Chinese characters and intended as a cautionary tale advising Japan and other Asian countries of the pitfalls of foreign invaders and intervention just four years before the appearance of Perry’s squadron in Tokyo Bay. Mineta Fuko 1817-1883 was thrown into prison for having published the work without official consent and later after he was released was deprived of the right to live in Edo Kyoto or Osaka -- the santo kamae tri-urban banishment and many of the volumes were seized and others were censored or removed. The striking images by Mennie portray Chinese temples palaces peddlers laborers ancient walled cities Chinese shops and Chinese eating at outdoor tables at the beginning of the 20th century. Mennie 1875/6-1941 trained as a chemist and worked as an amateur photographer in Scotland. He initially began working in China as an assistant in the firm of Mactavish & Lehman & Co. in Beijing later working for the Mactavish Photo Shop in Shanghai as one of the first producers in China of picture postcards. He later joined the A.S. Watson & Co. -- chemists druggists wine spirits & cigar Merchants who also dealt in all kinds of photographic chemicals and equipment later becoming their managing director the firm still flourishes to this day as one of the largest health and beauty retailers in the world. Mennie contributed photographic images for numerous works and published several of his own images. He died in the Japanese Lungwha internment camp near Shanghai in 1941. Colour woodblock print 37.2 x 25.3 cms the sheet a little age-toned a spot of browning at the foot and a pinhole in the upper margin but the image unaffected very good condition. This colour woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitora is an excellent example of Yokohama-e Yokohama Prints which were very popular in Japan after the country was opened in the mid-19th century. Yokohama was one of the trading ports with the outside world and many foreigners were residing in the area. The Yokohama-e was very similar to the Nagasaki-e Nagasaki Prints and depicted people and cultures which were foreign to the Japanese. Utagawa Yoshitora was active between the end of Edo Period to the mid-Meiji Period and produced numerous Nishiki-e prints including Yokohama-e in his career. He was regarded as one of the top Nishiki-e artists around that time. <br> <br>In this print a Western man is strolling outside with his dog and a Mongolian boy who carries an umbrella for him. The man is observing something in the distance and about to jot down something in his notebook with a pen which he holds in his right hand. An encyclopaedic catalogue issued amid the rapid expansion of the Chinese modern medicine market listing products to treat ailments such as heart disease diabetes problems with vital organs and depression as well as sexual problems impotence and premature ejaculation. Tiande was formed from the merger of Bayer Meister Lucius & Brüning and three other German chemical and pharmaceutical companies creating a corporation with a production plant of unprecedented size. Octavo. Illustrations in text most pages with decorative orange border. Text in Chinese. Original reddish brown cloth spine and front cover lettered in gilt purple endpapers with orange logos. Collection of five colour-printed Nianhua posters each of the central images onlaid within a stiff red paper border with a thin cream paper frame worn and discoloured and at the top of each a fine aqua paper border; the sheets a little creased two images with a visible tide-mark minor edge tears not affecting the images strengthened neatly on the verso with washi one with an early paper repair to the top margin all approx. 93 x 51.5cms sheet size in good condition. Five examples of "new" Nianhua posters dating from the Great Leap Forward all featuring babies and children symbolizing happiness prosperity and the promise of a thriving future. In one a sister braids her hair whilst minding her crawling toddler brother "Sweet Heart". On the wall a poster proclaiming the industrialisation of agriculture "Agriculture is the foundation of the national economy and grain is the foundation" caption; in another five toddlers dance in a circle their flags and lanterns captioned "The Great Leap Forward" and "Long Live Mao". Ephemeral examples of folk art and the use to which it was put for political purpose. . unknown
63194Very Good. Apart from curling at the edges the photographs are generally in excellent condition. Over three hundred Edwardian snapshots most approximately 120 × 95 mm but with some variation of travels in India China north Africa and Europe with some 'at home at ease' images as well. Many are captioned some are dated 1907 and there are occasional clues to the identity of the presumably English travellers 'Captain & Mrs Gibb & Anne' etc.; intrepid women feature prominently including on horse- and elephant-back and in motor cars.
