First edition of this photobook issued in honour of the tenth anniversary of the People's Republic of China with a 1964 gift inscription from Solomon Adler one of the select group of Westerners permanently resident in China during the Mao era. An economist by training Adler 1909-1994 worked in the US in the 1940s but fell under suspicion during the "red scare." After a period spent at Cambridge University he moved to China in 1962 living in Beijing until his death three decades later and working on the official Chinese translation into English of Mao's Selected Works. His inscription found on the front free endpaper presents the copy to a nephew. Octavo. Illustrations some colour throughout. Text in Chinese. Original dark pink silk spine and front cover lettered in gilt front cover blocked in blind. With tightly fitting acetate cover. Housed in original printed slipcase. 1945184914Tianjin: Municipal Government Reception Committee for Allied Forces 1945. A handout issued shortly after the launching of Operation Beleaguer and the arrival of American troops in Tianjin. Ten pages are devoted to the location of Allied billets which were set up in the consulates of defeated powers merchant premises and clubs as well as at the racecourse. Printing was handled by the Chihli Press located opposite the headquarters of the 3rd Amphibious Corps. Small octavo pp. 24. Text in English and Chinese. 1912179999London: Roberts & Leete 1912. Certificate number 11028 of this early Chinese government bond known as the "Gold Loan of 1912". These bonds were released to raise funds for the Republic of China a year just after the fall of the Qing Dynasty. The gold loan of 1912 for £10 million sterling was authorized by the Minister of Finance of the government of the Republic of China. The certificate states that "the Bearer of this Bond is entitled to receive from the Government of China the sum of Twenty pounds sterling with Interest thereon from the 30th day of September 1912 at the rate of five per cent. gold per annum". A total of 80 coupons were originally attached to the verso with 52 coupons having been used. The remaining 28 coupons attached and folded to the verso are "for ten shillings sterling being one half-year's interest." and numbered 53 to 80. Paper certificate 450 x 305 mm with 28 coupons attached on verso. Engraved with geometric and floral borders in blue yellow patterned engraved background Chinese government seals printed in red. A little creased mild spots to extremities one coupon attached by tape repair colours bright: a very good piece. unknown
