1907179096London.: Waterlow & Sons Limited. 1907. Engraved bond in red and black 51.7 x 33 cm central fold corners trimmed elaborate foliated borders signatures of the Viceroy of Canton the Chinese Minister in London and the Director of the Chinese and British Corporation on the verso text in three bordered panels including a finely engraved steam train; together with a separate leaf of coupons approx. 51.2 x 20.5 cm numbered 3 - 20 1 & 2 excised the bond slightly rippled and the outer edge discoloured the coupons with edge toning and staining on the verso and marked £100.0.0 in ink but the both in very good condition. Impressive bond issue with the coupon redemption date running until 1985 !. The Kowloon-Canton Railway KCR was the first cross-border railway connecting Hong Kong with mainland China.

"Discussions between the Colonial Office in London the Hong Kong Government and the British & Chinese Corporation led to an agreement in late 1904 that the Hong Kong Government would undertake the financing construction and operation of the section of the line within Hong Kong. The remaining section to Canton Guangzhou was financed through a loan raised by the British & Chinese Corporation on behalf of the Chinese Government which operated the section after its construction by the corporation.

Settling the detailed financing arrangements for the British and Chinese sections proved to be complicated because the funding of the British Section as it became known depended on the raising of the loan for the Chinese Section. The arrangements were finally ratified by the Hong Kong Government's passage of the Railway Loans Ordinance in 1905 clearing the way for construction of the British Section. It took until 1907 however for the loan agreement for the Chinese Section to be concluded with the financing being provided by way of a bond issue floated in London in April of the same year.

The importance attached to the project was reflected in a speech made to the Hong Kong Legislative Council by the colonial governor Sir Frederick Lugard in 1908:

"You will recall that in 1905 it was decided to build the railway by means of a loan. It was not a question of whether the undertaking would be an immediately remunerative concern; it was not a question of whether the railway should pay interest and sinking fund on the capital expended or even if it would at once pay working expenses. It was a question of preserving the predominance of Hong Kong. It was a question of seeing that the final outlet of the main trunk railway should be at Kowloon and at no other place." see Wikipedia entry . Waterlow & Sons Limited. unknown

1905210394China and England.: King's Messengers S.P.G. circa1905. Small Chinese figure 17 x 6 cms padded silk brocade paper hair and watercolour the painted face a little scuffed mounted onto stiff card and backed onto what appears to be the verso of a certificate or exercise book cover trimmed and creased with a repaired tear and a few minor abrasions printed with the text "King's Messengers S.P.G./ Rugby Branch. / Passed Examination in Missionary Knowledge. Secretary. Chaplain. 19." all blank the figure with a loop at the head for display or hanging very good clean condition. The King's Messengers were the children's branch of a Church of England Missionary Society: S.P.G. "The Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts". Presumably the delicately made figure was constructed at a Society mission in China S.P.G. sent missionaries to China in 1895 and at some point glued to the backing. A loop at the top suggests that the figure was intended to hang free. The doll-like figure represents an unusual example of folk art. . King's Messengers, S.P.G. unknown

1915217498San Francisco.: Atlas Printing Co. 416 S. Dearborn St. Circa1915. Printed handbill 4pp bifolium 20 x 14cms four black and white photographic illustrations and text within borders original folds small edge tears early pencilled annotation "Milwaukee -- 1915" at the foot of the front page and a couple of interior doodles a little dusty especially at the folds but overall in very good condition. Exceedingly scarce unrecorded handbill advertising Benjamin Brodsky's documentary "Real Life in China.the most interesting and educational photoplay ever produced in 8 big reels" and only the first of a two part film intended to be shown with a lecture by Brodsky himself. The handbill claims "Mysteries are mysteries no longer under the searching eye of the camera and the walled in and superstition-locked glories of China are brought forth as evidence of the real wonder of the celestial empire".

The four captioned photographic illustrations show: A pagoda; Pumping water on the rice fields; Grinding the Rice and a Chinese Prisoner in stocks.

The US National Film Preservation Foundation on whose site a remarkable fragment of the film has been preserved and is viewable notes that:

"On the eve of World War I as the political struggles in China made the news Americans knew little about the vast and mysterious country of more than four hundred million people. But by the end of 1917 there were at least 10 documentaries available to satisfy curiosity about America’s new ally in the Far East. Virtually all were short subjects that like the Burton Holmes travelogues from Paramount played alongside features. Travel shorts with a more educational slant continued in circulation through schools and nonprofit groups for years afterward.

Of these offerings the hugely ambitious Trip through China was “so vastly different from the general run of tour films that it stands in a class by itself” wrote Motion Picture News. Five years in the making or a less probable ten in some tellings the documentary was the brainchild of Benjamin Brodsky a widely traveled Russian-born businessman who claimed to speak 11 languages. According to a 1912 Moving Picture World profile the young entrepreneur had moved to China from San Francisco after the 1906 Earthquake and set up shop as a film exhibitor. A Trip through China was probably fashioned from the 20000 feet of negative that Brodsky brought back to San Francisco in 1915. Versions screened locally nine months later and in Los Angeles the following year. When distribution went national in March 1917 the ten-reeler was heralded as a “revelation.” . Bryan Richards 1798 and Wm. First edition of an antiquarian classic by John Selden 1584-1654 eminent jurist polymath prolific scholar and in recent times celebrated for his ownership of the earliest surviving Chinese merchant map of East Asia re-discovered with justifiable fanfare as a treasure of the Bodleian Library by Robert Batchelor in 2008.

At the time of its release Selden's "The History of Tithes": "gave great offense to the clergy and was vigorously refuted in a number of volumes to which Selden was forbidden the right to print replies" Pforzheimer. It has been noted that the absence of the printer's name and the place of publication showed that Selden anticipated an unfavourable reaction to his denial of divine right of tithes. He was not disappointed. The work was suppressed and Selden was forced to apologize for having given offense-- and the book was withdrawn from circulation. His work was much studied: this copy with early marginalia: "by this Historie the Right of tithing belong not to ye profession of ye Canonist Civilian or Divine but with Lawyers." the last three words hastily crossed out.

Early owners include London Antiquary Thomas Bryan Richards whose extensive Library was sold by King & Lochée in 1812. . 170120655London: Churchill 1701. Very good condition. An engraved frontispiece portrait of Johann Nieuhoff an official of the VOC and important writer and illustrator of contemporary China whose study of China was produced in 1665 by his brother Hendrick and titled 'An embassy from the East-India Company of the United Provinces to the Grand Tartar Cham emperor of China: . at his imperial city of Peking wherein the cities towns villages ports rivers &c. in their passages from Canton to Peking are ingeniously described by John Nieuhoff; '.

The work was essential to European understanding of China as it was the only reliable source along with the reports of the Jesuits of information and images available at the time. The work was translated into French German Latin and English and was the first to include 150 true to life illustrations drawn by Nieuhoff himself. In 1649 he joined the East India Company first in Batavia and then in China as steward at the embassy which aspired to gain trading rights with China's southern coast. His specific duties were to
observe all "farms towns palaces rivers . and other buildings" that he might encounter drawing them "in straight form and figure" as well as remains of the historical victory of the "Tartars" Manchus that brought an end to the reign of the Ming dynasty. He remained in China until 1657.

Nieuhoff wears an elaborate costume and holds a rolled sketch in his right hand; in the background is a sailing ship. 7 x 11 1/4" on paper 7 3/4 x 12" Churchill unknown
1902220266Japan. No date. Circa1902. Two very attractive colour folded manuscript maps one showing China and the other Korea.

Map of China: Watercolour map 48 x 63.5cm. Closed tear now professionally repaired.

Map of Korea: Finely detailed watercolour map a few tiny holes very neatly repaired on the verso with archival washi. 33 x 24.5cm Two delicate hand-painted maps one of China and one of Korea produced by a Japanese student cartographer named Koike Tokushige 小池徳重.

The undated map of China appears to have been produced in the first five years of the twentieth century: a time when Japan had recently colonized Taiwan and when Japanese economic and political interest in the region was rapidly expanding. The inscription on the map suggests that it was a third year college project. But the high level of detail suggests that the artist had considerable experience of map making. The map of China shows the main provinces rivers major transport routes the Great Wall and the location of key cities although the names of the cities are not included. It also shows outlines of the Korean Peninsula Taiwan and the Japanese island of Kyushu but not the rest of Japan.

The map of Korea is more detailed. It provides an accurate outline of the Korean Peninsula with careful hatching indicating changes in elevation. Rivers and major road routes are shown on the map and the locations of major towns are marked though only Busan and Incheon are named. Dotted lines show coastal sea routes and routes between Kyushu and Busan and between Incheon and China. The map shows the Gyeongin railway line between Seoul and Incheon which was completed in 1899 and route of the Gyeongbu railway line between Busan and Seoul whose construction started from both ends in 1901. But the map depicts only small sections of this line close to Seoul and Busan as being completed with the rest more lightly outlined to show the projected route implying that the map was drawn around 1901-1902 and certainly before the Gyongbu line was opened in 1904.

Inserted text gives the land area and population of Korea. Rather strangely though the figure given for the Korean population is vastly underestimated. Ikeda gives this as 5.7 million when in fact at that time is was around 18 million. . unknown

Intricate and wonderfully composed engraving after a drawing by the artist William Alexander 1767-1816 prepared for the folio atlas to George Staunton's account of the Macartney Embassy to China of 1793. The engraver James Fittler 1758-1825 was appointed by George III to be his Marine Engraver. Despite the serried ranks of the Chinese noblemen attendants and the figure of the Emperor himself occupying almost the entire engraving it is the figure of Lord Macartney making an entrance stage right who steals the show. Fittler has amplified Macartney as "hero" with the dramatic use of tone: Lord Macartney is bathed in light a representative of the British Empire "on which the sun never sets". The page attending Macartney is the figure of George Staunton's son Thomas.
A dramatic evocation of the might of Empire.

From the Estate of the late collector and scholar Arthur Hacker. .
