2004219697Privately Printed. 2004 2005 and 2010. A meticulously kept richly detailed collection of colour and black and white photographs two self-published spiral-bound books and a manuscript most likely intended to be printed in a similar manner to the two books.

The collection consists of: 7 colour photographs and 23 black and white photographs most likely dating from the mid-2000s and measuring 20 x 25.5cm on average; A Week on the Jining-Tongliao Jitong Railway 2004 62pp 29 x 32cm spiral-bound; A Day on the Jitong Railway 2005 56pp 29 x 32cm spiral-bound; and Huanan Forestry Railway 2010 10pp 31 x 34cm leaves inserted into stapled sleeves. Principal focus is on the Jining-Tongliao Railway in Inner Mongolia and captures the railway as it was before its electrification in the 2010s. The two books relating to the railway are carefully captioned in intricate detail and give particular attention to the locomotives pictured and the character of the line's geography. The book relating to the Huanan Forestry Railway is curious for its timing with its photographs having been captured in 2010 - only a year before the railway's final closure and the replacement of its functions by a lorry service. . Full-page engraving 23.8 x 31.2 cm plus caption on a single newspaper leaf sheet a little toned marginal spotting the image in very good condition. The Shanghai Paper Hunt Club was founded in December 1863. The Illustrated London News' "Special Artist" William Simpson in his commentary overleaf notes that "The 67th Regiment who were stationed at Shanghai about ten years ago introduced it at this place. The character of the country here as well as the breed of Tartar ponies seem well suited to the sport." Membership of the Club remained the preserve of male expats until the late 1920s when it was opened to Chinese membership. As is suggested in the engraving whilst the prey was paper rather than foxes the sport could still be brutal for both horse and rider. Simpson brings his skill and experience as a war artist to the observation of the hunt.

William Simpson 1823-1899 Scottish war artist and correspondent joined the 'Illustrated London News' in the 1860s and covered the Abyssinian campaign 1868 Franco-Prussian war Modoc war 1873 and Second Afghan war. Initially for use in the refreshment room of the Prince's Skating Rink Exhibition and then sold in aid of funds.

The Women's Exhibition of 1909 all but forgotten today was a tipping point in women's struggle for equal rights. The event was open to both sexes and cleverly calculated to show men that suffragettes were not the dangerous 'shrieking sisterhood' they were painted but were in fact the wives mothers and sisters they knew women safely interested in the same female pursuits they always had been women dedicated to creating beautiful things not destroying them.

'The winged angel logo was repeated on almost all promotional material. It was especially striking on the elegant white tea service specially commissioned from a pottery in Staffordshire used in the traditional tea and refreshment room during the exhibition and for sale after the event. Commemorative china was a relatively new idea and this early understanding of branding as a way of advertising was a key element of the exhibition's success making the WSPU one of the first campaign groups to understand the significance of logos' http://annesebba.com/journalism/the-womens-exhibition-of-1909/

Disbound report from the Annual Report for the Smithsonian Institution: pp 265-277 8 black and white photographic plates 22.5 x 14.7 cms front leaf loose age-toning and inner edge a trifle marked but otherwise in very good condition. Sir Francis Younghusband 1863-1942 returned to a hero's welcome following his Tibet "Expedition" of 1903-4 which was in reality a militarized diplomatic mission driven by geopolitical anxiety the Great Game and was marked by dramatic clashes and some 2700 Tibetan casualties. This report was originally read at the Royal Geographical Society in London in February 1905 here reprinted from a Smithsonian Annual Report of the same year and was widely reviewed. One such appearing in "Nature" belied the military truths:
"Younghusband was also able to touch briefly upon some of the results obtained by the scientific experts who accompanied the mission as well as by the survey party under Captains Rawling and Ryder which in the late autumn did excellent work along the whole course of the Upper Brahmaputra proving definitely that no peaks higher than Everest exist on this flank of the Himalayas." .
