A signed presentation copy to Madame 'Vatsamachi' unclear by Judith Gautier the first woman elected to the Academie Goncourt and the daughter of the poet and dramatist Theophile Gautier. With the initials LV at the base of the spine. Judith Gautier was an artist poet novelist and orientalist the friend and collaborator of artists such as Wagner Hugo and Sargent who painted a full length portrait of her. She wrote poetry prose essays and articles; her creative work drew on Middle Eastern Japanese and Chinese sources. She studied Chinese at a young age from Tin Tun Ling a Chinese man brought to Paris by the bishop of Macao to work on a French-Chinese dictionary. <br /> This is an anthology of Chinese poetry translated into French one of the earliest translations of Chinese poetry published in a European language. Each page is decorated with varying Art Nouveau inspired designs around the borders with poems grouped by topic such as: 'Les Amoureux' 'La Lune' 'Les Voyageurs' 'La Cour' 'La Guerre' 'Le Vin' 'L'Automne' and 'Les Poetes'. Signed presentation copy. "Nouvelle edition considerablement augmentee et ornee de vignettes et de gravures hors texte d'apres les artistes chinois". <br /> 8vo 279pp with black & white illustrations after Chinese artists. 1891184661London: British and Foreign Bible Society 1891. Used on missionary service in Penang A scarce missionary imprint: an early edition of the first New Testament in the Hokkien dialect of Xiamen and southern Fujian province. This was the copy of Daniel Davies Moore among the first Methodist missionaries in Penang which had an established community of Hokkien speakers. The translation was the work of four members of the English Presbyterian Mission: William Macgregor William S. Swanson Hugh Cowie and James L. Maxwell. The first edition was printed in Scotland for private circulation in 1873 and the same plates were used to produce editions in 1880s and 1890s. Moore 1856-1946 "left Canada for Singapore in April 1891 as a foreign missionary. There he was commissioned by the newly established Methodist Church in Singapore to start work in Penang for the English-speaking community. In July 1891 he started the first English service at the Penang Town Hall. The following month the first sacramental service for eight people was conducted at the rented residence of the missionaries at Carnavon Street" Dictionary of Christian Biography in Asia. His ownership inscription "Davies Moore Penang Dec. 7th 1892" is on the first blank verso. Octavo. Original green pebble-grain cloth spine lettered in gilt and ruled in black boards blocked in black yellow coated endpapers edges sprinkled red. Twentieth-century bookseller's ink stamp on front free endpaper. Binding worn especially at spine ends and joints spine repaired with adhesive a few stains internally: just about very good. 187323348Hong Kong 1873. Ephemera. Very good condition. A three page manuscript letter dated March 12 1873 from 'Charles' in Hong Kong to his sister 'Anna' in the United States. The letter was sent via San Francisco and the SS Colorado. Charles seems to be a young bachelor making his way in the Orient and he paints a detailed picture of daily events from a Westerners perspective but no real indication of why he is there.<br /> <br /> Charles and Anna were avid letter writers this one "No. 6" for the year. He refers to Anna's letters of Dec. 29 Jan. 5 19 that were just received. He talks of his lack of a Christmas and that most people who live in Hong Kong celebrate by getting "boozy" a sport he did not relish. He "would give more for 1 pound of good tobacco than 1 barrel of the best liquor."<br /> <br /> "For a young man who has not much determination this is the worse sic place in the world. There is nothing for him to do but play billiards & drink." <br /> <br /> He responds to Anna's questions about paper suits which were made in Japan a Joss house and the custom to accept an offer of tea 'you will have one of these little cups 7 saucers handed to you.' that he will send the 'Ivory letters to you for Miss Harrington' and refers to Anna's husband George other family and an acquaintance Wiliam Blanchard a pilot who lived in Shanghai as well as the 'great fire'. "The only thing I can say of the great fire is that it is too bad - but it may improve Boston by having different planned building and streets." The Great Boston fire of 1872 was Boston's largest and one of the most costly fire-related property losses is American history. He ends by sending his love to other family members and a request for a letter from George.<br /> <br /> The SS Colorado was the largest San Francisco-Panama route liner ever to sail the Pacific. She was originally brig-rigged but was altered in San Francisco in 1866 to enter the China service. In 1867 the Pacific Mail founded the first regular steamship service across the Pacific Ocean and the Colorado became the first American liner to carry mail across the Pacific to the Orient which helped pave the way for a rapid expansion of trade between California and the Orient. <br /> <br /> 4 page folded letter on watermarked paper "Hodgkinson & Co" with writing on 3 sides 8 3/8 x 10 1/8" with original fold marks. unknown
