193420978Nanchang Kiangsi China: The Association for the Advancement of New Life Movement 1934. Good condition. Pamphlet touting the benefits of the Chinese government led civic education program known as the New Life Movement established by General Chiang Kai-shek to promote cultural reform combat corruption and unite China under a centralized ideology.

China at the time had been threatened by Western imperialism as well as rising Japanese militarism and communism.

The New Life Movement stressed traditional Confucian morality and the Methodist notion of self-cultivation as the solution to the perceived degeneration of the Chinese people and was considered by the Kuomintang to be key element of Sun Yat Sen's Three Principles of the People. In China the New Life Movement ended in 1949.

Chiang launched this movement from his Nanjing headquarters when he was the leader of the Republic of China. He expelled Chinese communists from the party and led a successful unification of China. Despite a professed focus on reform Chiang's government concentrated on battling Communism within China as well as confronting Japanese aggression. When the Allies declared war on Japan in 1941 China took its place among the Big Four. Civil war broke out in 1946 ending in a victory by Mao Zedong's Communist forces and the creation of the People's Republic of China. From 1949 until his death Chiang led the KMT government in exile in Taiwan which many countries continued to recognize as China's legitimate government.

The 'Contents' include the Beginning of the New Life Movement NLM; The Unification and Promotion of the NLM; the Future of the NLM; The Important Speeches of General Chiang Kai-Shek; The Slogans Rules and Emblem of the NLM; Outline of the NLM; Appendix: The Staff of the General Association for the Promotion of the NLM. The Appendix last 2p comprises a list of the organizations staff; President Chiang Kai Sheh 32 Directors a Director-in-Chief a General Secretary Secretary and Head of the First Second & Third Departments and 18 Secretaries. The lengthy list of slogans and rules runs to 95 items including #40. Do not smoke opium.

We were not able to find this title on OCLC. However a similar pamphlet "Outline of the New Life Movement" was found OCLC: 3976888 14pp pamphlet color plates.

Pamphlet small 4to 2 pp 18pp plus one color plate of the symbol for the organization. 193025446China 1930. Very good overall. An example of student's work from the Oberlin Shansi Memorial Schools an accordion book with the label "Made in China By the students of the Self Help Club of the Oberlin Shansi Memorial Schools J'aiku Shansi China" inside the front board at the back.

In 1881 the Oberlin Graduate School of Theology decided to form “The Oberlin Band†to do mission work in China’s then remote Shansi Province now romanized as “Shanxi†under the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions ABCFM. In 1900 thirteen of them and many Chinese Christians were killed in the Taiyuan Massacre during the Boxer Uprising. The school continues to this day.

Accordion book 4 1/4 x 6 3/4" with yellow & red tassel marker and slipcase with yellow & red applied design on the front. A child has illustrated the word "Animal" inside the back page. A rather undeveloped attempt at making a book and case but one must start somewhere. Most likely a fund raising effort. The date of 1930 is a guesstimate which could be wildly incorrect. unknown

1927192997China: primarily 1927-31. A summer of devastation A visual record of an eventful period in East Asia in which four photographs of Wuhu show houses half underwater while fourteen of Hankou capture the extent of the disaster and daily life at high water including a Chinese air mail seaplane landing on the floodwaters. The product of a summer of intense rainfall the 1931 floods were among the worst natural disasters of the 20th century. In Hankou the Yangtse burst through the city's protective dyke on 1 August submerging an area the size of England and killing tens of thousands. The waters reached a level of 16 metres above the seasonal average smashing all previous records. Printed on two sheets of thin paper the edition of the Hankow Herald dates from a month after the city's flood defences gave way. It reports on urgent efforts to support refugees including the reaching of an agreement with local shipping companies to transport the displaced down the river and the efforts of the relief committee. A box at the head of the first page gives the watermarks for the day before and the drop in the level of the receding floodwaters. The subject matter and captions imply that the serviceman was posted to Royal Navy vessels - HMS Widgeon and HMS Cockchafer - patrolling the Yangtse and undertaking anti-piracy operations. The collection comprises vernacular shots of Shanghai including fine vistas from the roof of the Union Jack Club Shasi stretches of the river and Changsha and Hankou during winter. In two flames from a burning American Oil Company ship at Hankou climb into the sky. Several images - mostly vernacular - are dated October 1927 and relate to SS Irene a merchant ship captured and sunk by pirates near Bias Bay that month. Landscape album 135 x 225 mm with 112 gelatine silver photographs c. 55 x 8 to 65 x 110 mm corner-mounted on black card leaves white manuscript captions on some leaves some loose caption slips. Fine original hand color; slight split at centerfold fine condition.

A brilliant example in rich original hand color of the rare and only English language edition of the earliest printed folio-size western map specifically of China and "the first to show the Great Wall"Nebenzahl. "This map remained the standard type for the interior of China for over sixty years" Tooley. Although 2 pocket-sized English language editions of an abbreviated version of Ortelius' Theatrum entitled Epitome were published previously in 1601 and 1603 with brief texts in English the English text in the present edition runs to 2 large folio pages printed on the back of the map giving an extensive description of China drawn from recent publications of observations by European travelers to the area particularly Jesuits. With its three lushly designed cartouches and many illustrations of indigenous shelters modes of transportation i.e. the famous wind wagons and animals this is one of Ortelius's richest engravings and among his rarest.

Nebenzahl Mapping the Silk Road and Beyond 4.6; van der Krogt 8410:31:051; Tooley Maps and Mapmakers p. 106 pl. 78 p. 108; Walter Japan: A Cartographic Vision 11F p. 186.
