Engraved bond in blue red and black 44.8 x 32.8 cm old folds top corners trimmed elaborate geometric borders three cartouche engravings: the mythic god Mercury god of financial gain and commerce atop a tunnelling drill rice fields with a pagoda and a mountain pass with a Chinese temple text in English German French and Russian signature of the Chinese Minister of Finance and Manager of the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation HSBC and facsimile seal of the Chinese Government and of the Chinese Minister in London on the verso conditions of the bond in four languages and amortisation tables in four currencies; together with a separate leaf of coupons approx. 38.5 x 33 cm numbered 52 - 94 51 excised the bond slightly rippled and afew minor stains on the verso rust-stain on the verso of the coupons and marked £100.00 in ink but the both in very good condition. Impressive and finely engraved bond. <br> <br>The Reorgansation Gold Loan of 1913 for the capital sum of £25000000 to enable the new government of the Republic of China to meet financial liabilities and for the reorganization of government institutions and to meet the administrative costs. The loan was authorised by Presidential Order of 22nd April 1913 officially communicated by the Wai Chiao Pu to the Ministers in Peking of Great Britain Germany France Russia and Japan. The Wai Chiao Pu was the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the government of the Republic of China. <br> <br>The principal financial institutions which participated in the loan arrangements were the Hongkong & Shanghai Banking Corporation Deutsch-Asiatische Bank Banque de l’Indo Chine and Russian Asiatic Bank. . The most important interdenominational missionary journal of the time A collection of four scarce early volumes of this Shanghai-based periodical which served as the expatriate missionary community's premier forum for sinological exchange including contributions on philosophy social history linguistics literature and religion. Early volumes are now seldom encountered in commerce. The Chinese Recorder and Missionary Journal was first published in 1868 in Fuzhou under the editorship of Stephen Livingstone Baldwin and then Justus Doolittle. In 1874 editorial responsibilities were passed to Alexander Wylie 1815-1887 the agent of the British and Foreign Bible Society in Shanghai with the city's American Presbyterian Mission Press taking over printing and distribution. Issued every two months the journal featured articles by leading missionary-sinologists including Emil Bretschneider Henry Yule Timothy Richard and Samuel Wells Williams. 24 parts in 4 vols octavo 235 x 153. 1912179999London: Roberts & Leete 1912. Certificate number 11028 of this early Chinese government bond known as the "Gold Loan of 1912". These bonds were released to raise funds for the Republic of China a year just after the fall of the Qing Dynasty. The gold loan of 1912 for £10 million sterling was authorized by the Minister of Finance of the government of the Republic of China. The certificate states that "the Bearer of this Bond is entitled to receive from the Government of China the sum of Twenty pounds sterling with Interest thereon from the 30th day of September 1912 at the rate of five per cent. gold per annum". A total of 80 coupons were originally attached to the verso with 52 coupons having been used. The remaining 28 coupons attached and folded to the verso are "for ten shillings sterling being one half-year's interest." and numbered 53 to 80. Paper certificate 450 x 305 mm with 28 coupons attached on verso. Engraved with geometric and floral borders in blue yellow patterned engraved background Chinese government seals printed in red. A little creased mild spots to extremities one coupon attached by tape repair colours bright: a very good piece. unknown
