Oblong 8vo 15 x 22.5 cm. 160 black-and-white photographic illustrations all protected by tissue paper guards. First and only edition of a very rare work with photographic illustrations of the Chinese Revolution of 1911 with captions in Chinese and English. It was published specifically for circulation in the West and consists of 14 parts. The present work contains the first 4. However any volume in this series is exceptionally rare as we have not been able to find another copy in sales records of the past 100 years.The Chinese Revolution of 1911 is an important event in Chinese history as it resulted in the establishment of the Republic of China. The Revolution was preceded by decade of revolts since Chinese citizens had already been dissatisfied with the rule of the Qing dynasty 1636-1912 for some time. The Revolution started in October 1911 with the Wuchang Uprising after which similar revolts broke out across the country. The Qing court then initiated negotiations with the revolutionaries. Both parties came to the agreement that the emperor who was just 6-years old had to abdicate in February 1912. Revolutionary statesman Sun Yat-Sen 1866-1925 became the first provisional president.The present work offers an authentic pictorial record of the first revolts. The work contains numerous portraits of important leaders of the Revolution and members of the Qing court grim photographic illustrations of the battlefields in Wuchang now the Wuchang District of Wuhan and Hankow or Hankou and images of the attack on Nanking now Nanjing including the preparations and the aftermath.The binding shows very slight signs of wear the gutters of the front and back endpapers are weakened causing the binding to be wobbly but the boards are still attached. First offprint edition of this very scarce work outlining the governing philosophy and justifying principles outlined by Manchu loyalist advisor to former Hsuan-tung Emperor Pu-yi and politician who believed that by aligning with the Japanese Empire the Qing Dynasty could be restored in Manchuria and combat China’s rampant warlords. Following 1924 when Feng Yu-hsiang had occupied Peking deposed the rump Emperor and forced Pu-Yi and Zheng Xiaoxu 1860-1938 he had dedicated himself to restoring the Xing Dynasty and their rule. The state of Manchoukuo a Japanese puppet state was established March 1 1934 with Zheng Xiaoxiu serving as the first prime minister until 1935 when the Japanese forced the Emperor to remove him from the payroll and he was succeeded by Zhang Jinghui. Final page of report is printed inside back cover and usually unnumbered. Softcovers in original wrapper. 33 cm. 1925-1926 and 36 cm. 1928 issues. Bound with two staples along left side. Corner creasing on some issues. April 1928 issue printed on higher acid paper than the other issues and its browned pages are chipped and stained around edges. Group 3. folded and unnumbered four-page reports. 28 cm. Issues beginning with April 1929 given Volume is issue numbers beginning with Vol. V No.4. Group 4. Reports before July 1937 generally 24p. Reports thereafter are much shorter mostly 4-8 pages. Softcovers. 27 cm. Staples rusty. Folded strip on outer pages foxed. September 1937 issue creased and soiled. Title in Chinese and English. Slip printed in red and tipped to front cover of thin July 1937 issue reports that since their printer's office was located in the war zone the issue had not come out on schedule and was "bridged" -- the July August and December issues are only four pages as war problems continued. The lengthier January 1938 issue with Shanghai under Japanese control contains Notes to the Table of Wholesale Prices July-December 1937 explaining the war effects during that period and whether numbers were hypothetical or based on real transactions etc. during the war period. Japan gained control of Shanghai in November 1937 although they did not take control of the foreign concessions until after declaring war on the USA in 1941. We don't know what effect that had on the accuracy of these reports. paperback
