Einer der Puppenkünstler, die dem alten Charme der gosho-ningyo neuen Glanz verleihen können, ist Okamoto Gyokusui, dessen Vorfahren schon gosho-ningyo herstellten. Vor allem aber gab Noguchi Mitsuhiko den großen runden gosho-Köpfchen neuen Ausdruck und der ganzen Puppe neue und leicht spielerische Stellungen. Es gibt im modernen Japan eine Reihe ausgezeichneter Puppenkünstler, die es verstehen, der alten japanischen Puppenkunst eine moderne, neue Linie zu geben. Zu diesen berühmten Künstlern kommen noch eine ganze Anzahl Amateure hinzu, die in Instituten bei erfahrenen Meistern aus Freude an der Schönheit und am künstlerischen Gestalten das Puppenmachen erlernen. Nicht selten gehen aus ihren Reihen auch bedeutende Künstlerinnen hervor, denen, wenn sich Bildung mit ausgezeichneter Technik vereint, wirkliche Kunstwerke gelingen, wie die Werke der Puppenkünstlerin Hori Ryujo beweisen. Da diese Amateurinnen selten schnitzen können, benutzen sie die Plastikmasse shiso und befestigen darauf die Kleidung; damit erzielen sie eine ähnliche Wirkung wie mit der kimekomi-Technik. Ganz neu ist, daß man Japan-Papier über die Plastikmasse zu ziehen versucht, um einen Hauteffekt hervorzurufen. Die eigentliche Amateurtechnik, mit der man das Puppenmachen als eine Art Spiel betreiben kann, ist die Technik der sakura-ningyo, wobei sakura >Kirschblüten< bedeutet. Sie geht auf westlichen Einfluß zurück, auf europäische Puppen mit ausgestopften Stoffgliedern und einem Kopf aus festem Material. … (Seite 48)
