He Was The Son Of Girolamo Carafa Marquis Of Castelvetere Nephew Of Pope Paolo V. He Was Also The Brother Of Cardinal Fortunato Ilario Carafa Della Spina. He Graduated In Rome In Utroque Iure . He Was Appointed Bishop Of Aversa In 1644 The Year In Which He Also Received Episcopal Consecration. He Was Apostolic Nuncio In Catholic Switzerland In 1653 At The Republic Of Venice In 1654 And In Austria From 1658 To 1664. Pope Alexander Vii Elevated Him To The Rank Of Cardinal In The Consistory Of 14 January 1664 Assigning Him The Title Of Cardinal Presbyter Of Santa Susanna In 1665 . In 1675 He Opted For The Title Of Santa Maria In Via . He Was A Chamberlain Of The College Of Cardinals 1676-1678. An Earlier Carlo Carafa 1571-1561 Was Born At Naples Into One Of The City's Most Ancient And Distinguished Families A Younger Son Of Giovanni Alfonso Carafa Count Of Montorio And His Countess Caterina Cantelma. One Brother Was Giovanni Carafa Duke Of Palianoanother Antonio Carafa 1520-1588 Was Made Marchese Di Montebello. Without Making A Name For Himself He Had A Long And Dubious Career As A Mercenary Soldier In Italy And Germany. He Entered The Household Of Cardinal Pompeo Colonna At An Early Age As A Page And Was Enrolled In The Order Of St John Of Jerusalem Later That Of Pierluigi Farnese Duke Of Castro Later Duke Of Parma The Son Of Paul Iii. He Then Fought Under The Alfonso D'avalos Marchese Del Vasto In Lombardy And Piedmont And Under Ottavio Farnese Duke Of Parma In Flanders And Germany Fighting Protestants In The Name Of The Emperor. Here An Incident Occurred That Reinforced Perceptions Among Contemporaries For Greed Arrogance And A Violent Nature: His Possession Of A Captive Gentleman Worth A Considerable Ransom Was Challenged By A Spaniard Whose Right Was Upheld By His Compatriot The Duke Of Alba; And In The Aftermath Carlo Pursuing His Adversary To Provoke A Duel Was Incarcerated At Trento Until He Agreed Not To Pursue The Vendetta. He Was Subsequently Exiled From Naples In 1545 For Murder And Banditry And Having Withdrawn To Benevento Was Embroiled In Another AssassinationAnd Was Then Alleged To Have Perpetrated The Massacre Of Spanish Soldiers As They Recuperated In A Hospital In Corsica. Two Weeks After Giovanni Pietro Carafa Was Elected Pope As Paul Iv He Raised Carlo To The Cardinalate On 7 June 1555. His Tenure As Cardinal Nephew Was Not A Great Success And He And Paul Iv Effectively Brought The Papacy To A Humiliating Defeat Against The Spanish That Nearly Resulted In Another Sack Of Rome. Carlo's Government Proved Unpopular And He Developed A Reputation For Avarice Cruelty And Licentiousness As Well As For Homosexual Sodomy Paul Had Chastised Cardinal Ghisleri For Not Sharing His Suspicions On This Latter Point. In January 1559 Paul Finally Accepted The Accuracy Of The Accusations Made And Exiled Both His Nephews From Rome And Replaced Carlo As Cardinal Nephew With Carlo's Own Nephew Alfonso Carafa Cardinal Archbishop Of Naples. In June 1560 Paul's Successor Pope Pius Iv Arrested The Leading Members Of The Family - Carlo His Brother Duke Govanni And Their Nephew The Cardinal Archbishop Of Naples Seizing Their Papers And Levying A Range Of Charges Relating To Abuses Of Power. Carlo Was Charged With Murder Sodomy And The Promotion Of Protestantism. After A Nine-Month Trial He Was Condemned Along With His Brother And Was Executed By Strangulation At Castel Sant' Angelo On The Night Of 6 March 1561. His Execution Was Considered At The Time To Have Been Motivated Primarily By Politics.

Giovanni. Battista Hacque/ Hacque, Johann Baptist unknown

Silvestro Valiero Or Valier Venice 28 March 1630 - Venice 7 July 1700 Was The 109Th Doge Of Venice Reigning From His Election On 25 February 1694 Until His Death Six Years Later. The Morean War Between The Republic Of Venice And The Ottoman Empire Which Had Been Ongoing Since 1684 Came To An End During Valiero's Reign As Doge In January 1699. He Was The Son Of Bertuccio Valiero Who Had Served As Doge From 1656 To 1658. Venice's War With The Ottoman Empire - The Morean War - Was Only One Part Of The Ottoman Empire's Struggle Against The Holy League Of 1684. On 11 September 1697 Ottoman Forces Were Defeated By Troops Of The Holy Roman Empire And The Kingdom Of Hungary At The Battle Of Zenta. This Decisive Battle Led To The Ottoman Empire's Determination To End The Great Turkish War And Peace Negotiations Began At Sremski Karlovci. These Negotiations Eventually Produced The Treaty Of Karlowitz Signed On 26 January 1699 And Ending The Great Turkish War Including The Morean War. Under The Treaty Venice Received The Morea Aegina Lefkada And Zakynthos Zante. Most Venetians Felt They Gained Far Too Little Territory To Compensate For The Huge Loss Of Life And Expense Of The Wars With The Ottoman Empire. The Republic Was Exhausted By The Long War And Facing Economic Distress But Little Changed For Valiero And He Continued Hosting Banquets Receptions And Parties At Which He Entertained Persons Of Rank.

Giovanni. Francesco Morosini 26 February 1619 - 16 January 1694 Was The Doge Of Venice From 1688 To 1694 At The Height Of The Great Turkish War. He Was A Member Of A Famous Noble Venetian Family The Morosini Family Which Produced Several Doges And Generals. In 1685 At The Outbreak Of The Morean War Morosini Took Command Of A Fleet Against The Ottomans. Over The Next Several Years He Captured The Morea With The Help Of Otto Wilhelm Königsmarck As Well As Lefkada And Parts Of Western Greece. He Also Briefly Captured Athens But Was Unable To Hold It And Attempted A Failed Siege Of The Former Venetian Fortress Of Negroponte. His Fame Reached Such Heights That He Was Given The Victory Title Peloponnesiacus And Was The First Venetian Citizen To Have A Bronze Bust Placed During His Own Lifetime In The Great Hall. During The Siege Of Athens In 1687 The Parthenon Was Used As A Powder Magazine By The Ottomans When On September 26 1687 Morosini's Cannon Scored A Direct Hit On The Edifice. An Attaché Of The Swedish Field Commander General Otto Wilhelm Königsmarck Wrote Later: "How It Dismayed His Excellency To Destroy The Beautiful Temple Which Had Existed Three Thousand Years!". By Contrast Morosini Who Was The Commander In Chief Of The Operation Described It In His Report To The Venetian Government As A "Fortunate Shot". When He Conquered The Acropolis In Early 1688 Morosini Tried To Loot Athena's And Poseidon's Horses And Chariots From The West Pediment Of The Parthenon But The Sculptures Fell On The Ground And Smashed. This Was The First Documented Attempt To Remove Sculptures From The Pediments. Morosini Also Looted From The Port Of Piraeus The Famous Piraeus Lion Which Is On Display At The Venetian Arsenal. In The Summer Of 1688 Morosini Now Having Been Proclaimed Doge Of Venice Attacked Negropont But Was Unable To Capture It And Was Forced To Return To Venice When Plague Broke Out Among His Troops. He Embarked On A Final Campaign In 1693 But Was Again Unsuccessful In Taking Negropont And Returned To Venice After Sacking Some Minor Coastal Towns. After His Death In 1694 A Large Marble Arch Was Placed In His Honor At The Doge's Palace.

Giovanni. Battista Hacque/ Hacque, Johann Baptist unknown
