First edition thus of this installment in the very popular series of illustrated novels issued by Ryutei Tanehiko 1783-1842 considered one of the 10 principal authors of gesaku -- popular illustrated fiction of the late Edo. By the mid-19th-Century he was virtually a household name and yet despite his celebrity and wide circulation of this many different productions all are quite scarce and even individual parts such as this tend to be uncommon. The splendid woodcuts were designed by Utagawa Kunisada II 1823-1880 who took the name Kunisada II in 1850-51 after marrying Kunisada’s daughter and focused on actors portraits of beautiful geishas along with erotica but his popularity waned in the Meiji period. 1925192095Tokyo: Gyosei Gakko 1925. Sole edition celebrating 25 years since the official certification of Gyosei High School. This school was set up by the Society of Mary as one of the first Catholic schools in Japan and was visited by famous figures such as Prince Saionji Kinmochi and the marshal of France Joseph Joffre. After Pierre-Marie Osouf was made the Bishop of Tokyo in 1876 he encouraged Catholic societies to send missionaries to open schools. In 1888 five members of the Society of Mary led by Alphonse Heinrich future principal set up in Tokyo's Kyobashi district modelling their school on the Collège Stanislas in Paris. It was officially certified in 1899 and remains in operation today. This photobook the oldest known anniversary publication by the school opens with a history of its first 25 years. It continues with maps of the campus and a large number of photographic illustrations. They show the school's teachers uniforms facilities graduating classes and champion sports teams. The final pages feature portraits of famous French and Japanese figures who had visited such as the marshal of France Joseph Joffre; the governor-general of French Indochina Martial Henri Merlin; Prince Saionji Kinmochi; Shibusawa Ei'ichi; and the president of the Osaka Chamber of Commerce Inabata Katsutaro. Oblong octavo. Facsimile calligraphy plate half-tone photographic illustrations and maps throughout all tissue-guarded; text in Japanese and French. Original light brown diapered paper wrappers yapp edges wire-stitched glued into wrappers and tied through two holes with coloured string as issued wrappers lettered in brown front wrapper blind-stamped with school logo. Edges a little nicked rear inner hinge torn but stable minor foxing on first page otherwise contents clean: a very good copy. unknown

Black paper mounts neatly captioned in white ink mostly in English with some Japanese. Images are b/w sepia or color only two are in color and range in size from 2 1/4 x 3 inches to 4 x 6 inches. The majority 63 are the smaller size. The album is in good condition as are the page mounts and the photographs are in very good condition. The loose photographs range in size from 2 1/4 x 3 inches to 4 x 6 inches and are sepia or b/w. They are captioned in ink on the reverse. Most of the album photos depict expeditions to climb Fujiyama and various of the Japan Alps with scenes along the way of people and places -ecstatic pilgrims the Imperial bodyguard women's groups schoolchildren and the photographer and his many climbing companions foreign and Japanese. The owner is not identified although some of his companions are: Arnold Bauer Charles W. Copp Harry Collins Professor Fujimura McKinnon etc. along with a group of boys from Matsumoto High School and several others. Excellent and interesting group of photos of the breathtaking mountain scenery of Japan. Mountaineering was and is a defining interest of the Japanese - there are still gods in those mountains. unknown

Late Meiji Circa1890s. 49 hand-coloured albumen prints each approximately 9.2 x 13cm or portrait mounted on thick album card each edged with a decorative washi border gilt and paint decorated bevelled enamelled covers; the front cover with a bamboo tree and a pair of birds in flight and the back cover a vine with butterflies 14 x 20cm renewed black leather spine and tissue guards some fading and spotting to the images and to the card margins the covers a little scratched small chip from the top edge a handsome album in good condition. A beautiful small album of hand-coloured photographs of Japanese people and scenes in a lacquered cover. An excellent example of the photo albums produced for visitors to Japan in the early Meiji Era. Images include photos of farmers tilling the field and sowing harvesting and threshing rice; street sellers peddling hats vegetables flowers and other wares; silk spinning and tea picking; a rickshaw puller and a woman being carried in a palanquin. There is also a picture of Japanese monks and several shots of domestic scenes including one of a koto player. Landscape views include fine photos of Mt. Fuji and of an avenue of cherry blossoms in flower. The images are after original prints by Felice Beato Kusakabe Kimbei Raimund von Stillfried and others. . hardcover

Though Expected To Take Part In The Negotiations Which Led In 1648 To The Peace Of Westphalia Bishop Chigi And Other Catholic Delegates Declined To Deliberate With Persons Whom The Catholic Church Considered Heretics. Negotiations Therefore Took Place In Two Cities Osnabrück And Münster In Westphalia With Intermediaries Travelling Back And Forth Between The Protestant And The Catholic Delegates. Chigi Of Course Protested On Behalf Of The Papacy Against The Treaty Of Westphalia Once The Instruments Were Finally Completed.
