This is a two-player board game where air planes and war ships fight against each other. Fascinatingly the game sheet illustration shows the battle ground is in the Pacific where islands with palm tree are dotted. Consequently the game might be produced at the early stage of the Pacific War. The players attack each other after starting from a naval base and an air base. There are two islands each where they are safely protected from their enemies. Original colour illustrated wrappers. Text evenly browned upper wrapper and first leaves a little insect damaged but still a very attractive souvenir issue. This fascinating magazine special issue was published to commemorate the Atlantic Fleet's the Great White Fleet visit to Japan in October 1908. The issue was published in November 1908 and reports all the activities of welcoming the fleet in Yokohama. Fuzoku Gaho was the first illustrated magazine which covered Japanese culture and was published between between 1889 and 1916. This special issue shows the enthusiasm Japanese government and the public displayed to the visiting US naval officers and sailors. <br> <br>The US Atlantic Fleet which consisted with 16 war ships went around the world between 1908 and 1909. As the ships were painted in white the fleet was also known as the Great White Fleet. In Japan they were called white ships 白船 in contrast to the black ships of Matthew Perry. This US naval exercise was to show off the American naval power to the world particularly in the Pacific after the Russo-Japanese War. The Japanese government decided to invite the fleet to Japan and welcome the ships with heightened enthusiasm. The contemporary social atmosphere and details of numerous events are covered extensively in this issue. Text is both in Japanese and English. The issue includes some pages of cartoon illustrations of American sailors on shore leave in Yokohama. The lead article on the front page of the June 6 1931 issue of this weekly newspaper aimed at children around 10 to 11 years old addresses the Trade Diversion Policy implemented by the Australian government against the Japanese textile industry. Australia imposed high tariffs on textile imports dealing a significant blow to Japan as a primary exporter of cotton and rayon to Australia. The article furnishes comprehensive information on the trade dynamics between Australia and Japan ultimately asserting that the diversion policy aimed to counter cheap imports from Japan safeguarding the interests of the British textile industry. <br> <br>In addition to this primary piece the children's newspaper features educational exercises and showcases calligraphy works submitted by its young readers. This poster published during the Pacific War was intended to educate the public about the importance of conserving and recycling everyday resources. The materials listed include steel copper aluminium paper cotton wool rubber and glass. The text stresses that many of these resources had to be imported from overseas and could be redirected for use in the war effort. Although the message itself is serious the poster is enlivened by cartoon-style illustrations that introduce humour and a sense of humanity. The recycling campaign was organised by Senji Busshi Katsuyō Kyōkai The Wartime Resource Utilisation Association which operated through a nationwide network and coordinated the collection of materials at a local community level. . 戰時物資活用協會. Exceedingly rare limited edition woodblock print by Ginnosuke Yokouchi also known as Kiyoharu Youkouchi a Yokohama-based artist who began his career as a watercolour landscape painter before producing eight self-published woodblock prints in the 1930s. See "Guide to Modern Japanese Woodblock Prints: 1900-1975" by Helen Merritt and Yamada Nanako. Little is known of his life but his work is representative of the Shin Hanga movement. The ten paintings in this album depict a variety of subjects. They are the works of a skillful group of likely amateur ink painters organised by Seika Sanshō 栖霞山樵 and also include his own works. The ink paintings in this album are: <br> <br>1 Landscape by Koshū 菰舟; 2 Orchid by Kikusui 菊水; 3 Landscape by Seika Sanshō; 4 Peaches by Koshū; 5 Landscape by Kikusui 菊水; 6 Crabs by Koken 菰軒; 7 Landscape by Rokumei 鹿鳴; 8 Narcissus by Seika Sanshō; 9 Landscape by Rokumei; 10 Otafuku Homely Woman Mask by Seika Sanshō. <br> <br>A double page explanation in calligraphy by Seika Sanshō dated 1930 tells us that this album contains works produced at the second Seika-kai gathering by Seika's group and that he requested Yamada Kokō 山田古香 to contribute the title calligraphy. Kokō's calligraphy "Sei yō shu 静有趣” means "Tranquillity has elegance". Yamada Kokō 1852-1935 orginally from Sanuki Province present Kagawa Prefecture was a professional calligrapher based in Kyoto. . hardcover

A set of unpublished mimeographed Japanese military documents containing detailed information about various parts of the Tapanuli Regency of Sumatra under Japanese occupation. The four separate volumes cover Tapanuli Regency in general the town of Tarutun Fort de Kock Bukittingi and the wider central west coast region of Sumatra. The volume on Tapanuli is dated August 1942 and the volume of Tarutun October 1942 suggesting that these were compiled a few months after the Japanese invasion of Sumatra. They contain basic information on climate population history customs transport and education. The volume on Tarutun includes a detailed fold-out map of the town and there are also detailed statistical tables on climate agriculture education etc. A rare and important source for researching the wartime history of Indonesia. . This series was inspired by Katsushika Hokusai's Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji and Utagawa Hiroshige's works while being depicted with a modern sensibility. Mt. Depicts scenes of destruction and renewal rescue and recovery efforts with commentary in Japanese. An uncommon and wide-ranging contemporary visual coverage including an areal photo of the devasting effects of the earthquake. The front cover features a scene the Crown Prince inspects the devastation Some historical illustrations of large scale earthquake during Edo period are included. The last two pages features full-page advertisements for insurance companies. <br> <br>The event known in Japanese as 関東大震災 Kantō Daishinsai occurred on the September 1st 1923. The damage caused by the magnitude 8 earthquake killed in total over 100000 people and sparked a tsunami and fire tornados. In Tokyo alone the devastation was such that it took two full days to extinguish the blaze that devastated the city. Numerous ceremonies were held in Kyoto in November 1928 to celebrate the occasion. <br> <br>Attractively illustrated in colour and drawing on Japanese graphic motifs the book describes in detail the structure and operation of postal and communication services as well as the postal savings bank including their scale range and charges. It also covers electricity generation and use shipping and aircraft services. The figures and statistics are presented throughout with stylish colour graphics combining clarity with visual appeal. <br> <br>The volume offers valuable source material for researchers interested in Japan’s communication systems in the late 1920s. Kasamatsu Shiro 1898 – 1991 was an active member of the Shin-hanga New Wood Block movement and had a very long and successful career. After the Pacific War his style evolved embracing western techniques and this 1958 print showcases his later work. Minakami in Gunma Prefecture is located in the mountainous area north of Tokyo and is known for its hot springs. The globe-shaped ashtray commemorates the highly publicised 1937 Tokyo–London flight of the modified military aircraft Kamikaze sponsored by Asahi Shimbun. The flight captured the public imagination and was reported as a major national success. <br> <br>The ashtray is attractively decorated with an image of the aircraft together with its route from Japan to Britain and the precisely recorded flying time of 94 hours 17 minutes and 56 seconds. <br> <br>In response the rival Mainichi Shimbun sponsored an even more ambitious venture: a round-the-world flight by the aircraft Nippon. The accompanying four-page newspaper supplement promotes the undertaking with photographic illustrations including a dramatic front-page image of the aircraft flying over Mount Fuji and a detailed projected route map. Period advertisements featuring Western military aircraft add further visual and historical interest. <br> <br>Thenewspaper conveys a clear sense of competitive ambition expressing the hope that this flight would surpass earlier records. With a crew of seven Nippon completed its journey in approximately two months. However the outbreak of World War II in Europe shortly after departure forced the cancellation of planned stops in London and Paris although Berlin and Rome were successfully visited. <br> <br>Together these pieces offer a vivid insight into the intersection of aviation media rivalry and national aspiration in late 1930s Japan. . A series of biographies of famous figures in world history aimed at a Japanese juvenile audience. These illustrated volumes are biographies of Demosthenes no 2 of the series Hannibal no. 5 Garibaldi no. 11 President Garfield no. 19 General Grant no. 29 and King Charles XII of Sweden no. 34. The books by Japanese authors give an interesting insight into the European and American figures who were regarded as historically significant and as moral exemplars in the Meiji Era. The series was published at a time when Japanese education was still strongly influenced by western models although a new wave of more nationalist education was just beginning to take hold. President James Garfield for example is rather surprisingly perhaps described as having been not merely a US President but also one of the great figures of modern times 'in terms of his opinions an ideal hero of civilization'. Reflecting the intended audience this and some other works in the series devote a lot of space to the childhood and early lives of their subjects emphasising their diligence hard work idealism and patriotism. .
