Während einer Reparaturarbeit an einem Wasserkanal in der dieser Gemeinde fand man im Meer Ringe zum Anbinden von Schiffen, die zu einem alten Hafen gehörten. Als diese Ringe aus dem Meer getragen wurden, befand ich mich zufällig dort und das trug dazu bei, meine ersten Schritte für diese Forschung zu machen. Denn dass sich dort früher ein Hafen befand, war zwar bekannt, es befand sich aber bis dahin noch keine Spur davon. Man begegnete bis dahin an der Küste diesbezüglich auch keinen archäologischen Befunden. Nach den Hinweisen, die auf einen Hafen deuteten, führten archäologische Befunde dazu, diese Gemeinde als Aulai zu lokalisieren. Diese Feststellung stellte sich anschließend eigentlich als Ausgangspunkt für andere Feststellungen heraus. Denn antike Quellen beschrieben die Lokalisation von Siedlungen, deren Lokalisation sich bis heute nicht konkret feststellen lie?en, mit dem Anhaltspunkt anderer Siedlungen, deren Lokalisation ebenfalls noch nicht festgestellt werden konnten. Nach dieser Phase der Forschung war eigentlich eine handfeste Stütze gefunden, mit der man Städte wie Zephyrion, Ingira, Aulai, Ankhiale, Kyinda, Kundi und Sizzu lokalisieren oder zumindest einen Lokalisationsvorschlag machen kann. During the summer of 1995 Turkish archaeologists discovered a unique Late Classical tomb in the Western Necropolis of Assos. A modestly designed cist grave, Tomb 4 surprised excavators with the richest cache of grave goods ever found at the ancient city. The 62 well-preserved artifacts, which date from the 4th century BCE, when Aristotle's school of philosophy was active at Assos, consist of terracotta figurines, gold and bronze jewelry, and vases. The variety of the coroplastic group is especially striking. The types include seated female musicians and a poet, an oklasma-dancer, comic actors, goddesses, a horse-rider, a warrior, female mask protomes, miniature furniture, various animals, and a figurine vase. The main purpose of this publication is to examine the finds from Tomb 4 and to shed light on characteristics of coroplastic produc-tion and socio-cultural life at Assos during its "Golden Age" through a contextual, typological, and iconographical analysis of the terracotta figurines. The variety of the figurines not only gives clues about the identity of the tomb-owners, but also hints at the many aspects of the "Golden Age" of Assos, such as the fertility cults active in the city, the increasing importance of the theatre, the place of women in socio-religious life, and the commercial and cultural relations of Assos with the neighbouring cities, especially Athens.

Immersa in questa terra di pace, teatro di orribili atrocità in un passato molto lontano, penso alla storia di questi luoghi, a quanto ogni singolo filo d'erba che calpesto abbia condiviso le pene del popolo che vi abita e ripercorro la mia vita. La storia non può essere fermata al 1915, i turchi e gli armeni non sono gli stessi di cento anni fa. Il turco non può più essere visto soltanto come l'assassino dei propri antenati e l'armeno come il traditore della nazione. Entrambi devono imparare a confrontarsi nel presente.
