A rare Ottoman map printed in last period shows Ankara city with detailed place names. This is one the serie of the Bonn projection maps which are the first map series in modern techniques in Turkey and the Ottoman Empire. In order to produce these maps covering Turkish territory, Reconnaissance Branch was incorporated into The Mapping Commission. The maps were produced in the datum based on the latitude and longitude of Ayasofya Mosque in equal area Bonn Projection. The field works for the 123 sheets covering the country were conducted by 76 staff. The production was completed in 18 years starting from east west. Field works continued without stopping except in years 1914 and 1920. This map series called also reconnaissance maps contributed a lot to producing 1:25.000 scale maps.

"The book brings together over 250 different ancient roads, rock-cut passes, road inscriptions, milestones, bridges and ruts from Phrygia to the Euphrates, the Euphrates region and beyond, and the Black Sea region. Anatolia entered into the historical era during the latter part of the Bronze Age, shortly before the foundation of the Hittite Kingdom. The pre-Hittite cuneiform tablets uncovered at Karum of Kanes (Kültepe) mention ass caravans moving back and forth between Mesopotamia and central Anatolia, a trip of some 1,000 km. Although these routes can tentatively be reconstructed there is no information about the roads. In a letter recovered from Kültepe, a merchant in tin asks his agent to divide the merchandise into small pieces, hide it into his clothes and bring it to town by the 'smugglers' track'; something usually done to avoid import taxes. His warning implies the existence of better roads than mountain tracks as early as the 1800s BC. For the journey between home and Anatolia the Assyrian merchants mostly employed asses or porters, and paved roads were not necessary. Thus the established caravan routes of the time, controlled by the local authority, were no more than roads in general sense. Still, the repeated use of the safest and easiest routes probably created more or less established caravan trails. The passes through high mountains and crossing points of the Euphrates were not many. Such sites were probably known and used by all the caravans.". Over 250 different ancient roads. Rock-cut passes. The general geographical characteristics of the region mentioned, the information given by the travelers of the 17th, 18th and 19th century about the region and previous researches are explained. Hastane Höyügü located in Akhisar district is the only Protohistoric settlement where excavation works were carried out in the area. Hastane Höyügü was taken as the centre in determining the geography covered in this book. The other settlements come from a total of 104 mounds detected as a result of surface surveys of the above-mentioned scientists. Among these mounds are 10 mounds dated to the Middle Bronze Age. In this context, the location of each mound, research history, SGT status and the dates of the meetings of the SIT are explained. Each of the finds of the mound were given the necessary technical information about the catalog, especially compared to other Western Anatolian centers which are contemporary of the profiles of the ceramics. Thus, it is understood that Akhisar, which forms the connection between the north and south regions of the Aegean due to its geography, has similar finds found in many centers in Panaztepe, Limantepe, Baglararasi, Beycesultan and Troia in Western Anatolia...".

After the death of Emperor Theodosius I in 395, the vast Roman lands stretching from the shores of the English Channel to the borders of Iran were divided into two realms, western and eastern. Although the western part of the empire faded away in the second half of the 5th century, the Roman Empire continued to exist in its eastern territories until 1453. The name "Byzantine" was used for the first time by the German humanist and philologist Hieronymus Wolf in the 16th century for this empire, whose capital was moved from Rome to the city of Byzantion (with its new name, Constantinople) and became Christian over time. This term became widespread in the 19th century and later. However, the people that this book is about have always called themselves "Roman" and their state the "Roman Empire", while their neighbors also knew them as "Romans". The Byzantine Empire that ruled for about 11 centuries is one of the states whose reign lasted the longest in Anatolia. Anatolia was the geographical, demographic, and economic cradle of this predominantly Greek-speaking Christian population and its culture. The loss of Anatolia as of the 14th century led to the end of the empire in a short time. The cry of Emperor Theodore II Laskaris - "Holy land, my mother, Anatolia!" - in one of his letters from the mid-13th century shows how vital these lands were for the empire. This book aims to present both Byzantine culture and, more specifically, Byzantine Anatolia, through 32 articles by Turkish and foreign Byzantologists, who are experts in their respective fields. While the articles on political, bureaucratic, military, economic and religious life focus on the state apparatus and social structure, articles on literature, health, art, and material culture remains provide valuable information about daily life. In the articles that constitute the last part of the book, the reader is invited to a historical journey through different geographical regions of Byzantine Anatolia.
