Byzantium in Popular Culture navigates through the eclectic presence of Byzantium in popular culture. Curated by Emir Alisik, the exhibition explores multiple and conflicting meanings of Byzantinism, and questions popular culture?s interaction with the Byzantine legacy. It scrutinizes a selection of motifs found in visual arts, literature, metal music, comics and graphic novels, video games, movies, and fashion representing Byzantium in popular culture. Emir Alisik and Gulru Tanman co-authors the introductory chapter to the catalogue accompanying ?What Byzantinism Is This in Istanbul!?: Byzantium in Popular Culture. The volume brings together the articles of 10 researchers who examine and interpret Byzantinism?s representations in various fields of art. The articles by Roland Betancourt, Felice Lifshitz, Brigitte Pitarakis, Sinan Ekim, Yagmur Karakaya, Elif Demirtiken, Jeremy J. Swist, Marco Fasolio, Haris Theodorelis-Rigas, and Emir Alisik discuss how Byzantinisms appearing in various domains of popular culture relate to the Byzantine history depending on the context in which those artworks are produced.

This volume brings together 27 papers presented at the 'Rencontres d'Archéologie de l'IFEA' devoted to the 'early' periods of a region of southwest Asia Minor: Caria. Several recent studies have significantly advanced Carian studies, but these have been limited to chronological fields from the Hekatomnids to the end of the Roman Empire. It has therefore seemed useful to propose around a symposium and its publication a state of knowledge for periods prior to the Hekatomnids by offering both archaeologists to present unpublished archaeological material, resulting from recent (often rescue) excavations, and historians to expose their latest reflections based on material already known but reassessed in the light of new discoveries. Translated from Turkish into English Inci Türkoglu. Historically, balance weights are as old as the balances themselves. Actually, balance and weight examples of Mesopotamian, Egyptian and Hittite civilisations are known from wall paintings, reliefs, papyri and collections. However, the scope of this book is the balance weights produced and used in the Aegean world during the Classical and Hellenistic periods. Balance weights were among the instruments of public sphere (instrumenta publica) of antiquity and they constitute an important group of antiquities worth studying for their unit marks, symbols, depictions, inscriptions and ornaments. However, balance weights have been among the most neglected artefacts within archaeological research. Certainly, this work at handbook level should not be expected to fill the gap entirely, but rather call attention to this field. The examples were chosen from the city-states in the Aegean world and cover only those which bear ethnic or symbol (parasemon). CONTENTS: FOREWORD. INTRODUCTION. Scope, material, and sources. New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (30 x 24 cm). In English. Color and b/w ills. 219 p. "In 2004, the Istanbul Archaeological Museums started large-scale salvage excavations at Yenikapi within the scope of Marmaray-Metro projects. For the first time in Istanbul's history, archaeological excavations were conducted at one of its Byzantine harbors. When the excavations started, it was not known what this ancient harbor at the mouth of the Lykos (Bayrampasa) River would yield. At first, Ottoman remains were encountered in the excavation area, which covers over 58,000 square meters. Then, one of Constantinople's most important, and the world's best known harbors, the Theodosian Harbor, was reached only 1 meter below sea level. During the ongoing excavations, countless small finds and works of architecture were unearthed. In addition to wood and rope fragments, an unexpected find, a shipwreck, was found in 2005. As the excavation area expanded, a total of 37 ships dating between the 5th and 11th centuries were brought to light. Among the finds are very well preserved small and large merchantmen, as well as galleys from the Middle and Late Byzantine periods, which have been found for the first time. The Yenikapi wrecks constitute the largest collection of shipwrecks ever found together. Another surprise was waiting for the archaeologists 6,3 meters below sea level: Istanbul's oldest settlement. This Neolithic settlement dates back 8000 years and changes the writing of Istanbul's history. The footprints of Istanbulites who lived there thousands of years ago were found a few meters below. As the excavations go on uninterrupted, we have now acquired much new information about the city. This exhibition has been prepared in light of the finds from Yenikapi and their scientific study. It presents a section of the city from its first inhabitants to the present, and allows a multidimensional view of trade, seafaring, shipbuilding technology, and everyday life in Constantinople through four wrecks that were found together with their cargo. "After an introduction of the historical background of the Christian art in Cappadocia the book deals with the architecture and paintings of the Karanlik Kilise, popularly known as the Dark Church, situated in the Göreme valley. The church and its paintings date from mid-tenth century. These wall paintings are known as the best-surviving examples of the late Byzantine art. In addition to the description of all of the major wall paintings in Karanlik Kilise, the Byzantine painting tradition of the period has also been dealt with. The consistency of its repertoire, style and colours indicate that the decoration of the Dark Church was done at a single phase of painting and immediately after it was excavated. Although there is no document surviving about the way that the Cappadocian rock-churches were decorated, the Middle Byzantine literature is rich enough to construct the general progress of the work. The paintings of the Dark Church were applied on a dry plaster of lime mixed with tufa and sand and with chopped straw as a binder. The only areas where this technique (secco or dry fresco) was replaced by the fresco technique were the heads of the figures of Christ, the Virgin and St John the Baptist in the main apse.".
