New English Original bdg. HC. In Italian. Color ills. 420 p., and many folding plts. New New Turkish Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (30 x 24 cm). Edition in Turkish. 223 p., color and b/w ills. Osmanli esnafi. Turkish edition of 'Ottoman craftsmen and their guilds'. In the Ottoman Empire, the word "esnaf" (craftsman, tradesman) covered a wide category of people, referring to artists as well as artisans. In fact, anyone who produced or sold something, or provided a service, in short anyone who worked for a living, was included in the category. The master artisans who produced prayer beads were considered as esnaf, as were the watermen who roamed the streets bare-foot crying "abates love's fire" as they freely distributed curative water. Members of the old fire squads entered the esnaf category as did porters. Peddlers formed another part of the esnaf mosaic. These poor people who carried their heavy load, walking the streets of istanbul often bare foot and dressed in rags, originated from the provinces. This book is not a historical research on the esnaf. It is a series of portraits gathered from the cinders of Ottoman social history

This exhibition is the second phase of a series of exhibitions dedicated to the eastern routes of travelers. The series began with "Smyrna in the 18th and 19th Centuries: A Western Perspective", organized at the Arkas Art Center in 2013. The first exhibition looked at Izmir as a beginning point of the journey by exhibiting works and documents that were left behind by travelers, while this exhibition foregrounds the scientific missions of the French, looking at Anatolia as seen by Western travelers beginning their journey in Izmir. This exhibition looks at the information gathered from travel books, documents, photographs, etchings, and portraits to offer a comparative perspective on 19th century Anatolia¿s social, economic, and cultural structure. The exhibition¿s perspective is critically distant to the Orientalist viewpoint that betrayed the East for the sake of aesthetic and cultural goals; the aim is to prioritize the contributions of scientific expeditions to show the reality of the East. The expedition route begins in Izmir and goes through Western Anatolia, the Mediterranean, Eastern Anatolia, Troy, Bursa, Istanbul, Ankara, and the Black Sea region
New English Original bdg. HC. 4to. (29 x 22 cm). In English. 195 p., color and b/w plates. Roman archaeology in a South Anatolian landscape: The Via Sebaste, the Mansio in the Döseme Bogazi, and regional transhumance in Pamphylia and Pisidia. An investigation of a Roman road-station in its archaeological and geographical context that provides a new perspective on the historical landscape of southern Anatolia. This study is based on fieldwork carried out during the 1990s in southwest Turkey in the modern vilayets of Burdur and Antalya, and it focuses on the settlements associated with a Roman mansio located in the Döseme Bogazi, the pass that linked Pisidia with the coastal region of Pamphylia. The course of the road and the structures that emerged along it were defined not by the evolution of Pisidia's Hellenized indigenous culture but by the priorities of Roman rule, especially during late antiquity. Furthermore, the study of the road where the mansio was located raises fundamental questions about the role played by this mountain pass in the movement of people and animals between the lowlands and highlands of South-west Anatolia.
Fine English Original cloth bdg. 4to. (34 x 24 cm). In English. 279 p., color and b/w ills. The Turkish hayat house. Türk 'Hayat'li evi. The Turkish House is both a picturesque image and a historical fact. Since the sixteenth century, descriptions of travelers and the engravings and paintings of western artists depicting Ottoman lands introduced to the world images of a different urban tradition and the existence of a different dwelling concept. Europeans regarded the physiognomy of the Ottoman capital, Istanbul, and other great cities of the Empire such as Edirne, Bursa, Izmir, Konya, Amasya and lesser towns from the Balkans to Iran and Mesopotamia with a mixed feeling of wonder and disdain. The Turkish urbanscape - the khans and caravansaries, covered bazaars, Turkish baths, the wooden houses with their lattice-screenned windows and bold overhaning projections aligned along the narrow and tortuous streets, well-lit and lavishly-decorated rooms in which dignified men in magnificent robes sat in characteristic postures on low divans, women of the harem looking over the streets from behind wooden screens - all these idiosyncratic images of a preindustrial society, idealized, romanticized and distorted by narrators and artists, excited the imagination of the western public about the nonchalant life of the Turks and the so-called Orient.
