"Piyale Pasha Moque and its Social Complex were construction cluster constructed by Architect Sinan upon the request of Kaptan-i Derya Piyale Pasa in 1573. It was constructed as a social complex consisting of mosque, education center, lodge, mausoleum, special part, ottoman elementary-primary school, market and Ottoman bath; however, only the mosque and mausoleum reached to today. The mosque in the 30,5x19,5 sizes and with rectangular plan is located on two big granite columns and arches and covered with six domes each of which has a diameter for 9 meters. Even if it is considered within Pre-Ottoman Grand Mosque in Anatolia with its six domes, Piyale Pasha Mosque is thought to be an example which was developed and made thinner through the new method of Sinan. One of the very rare tile mihrabs of classical period takes place in the marble minbar mosque. The sole minaret of the mosque which does not comply with the architectural traditions of the period with its domes, arches, entrance portico takes place right on the entrance and it has a single balcony. The mosque was ruined because of the surrounding dense structuring activities, omissions, and natural disasters such as fires and earthquakes in time. All cement-based joints and plasters were rasped and therefore, original hand-drawn works were found out and protected within the scope of the restoration works. Upon the removal of the screed layers on the top cover, the original dome figures were revealed. The work was reached to its original identity and unlicensed constructions in the parcel were demolished and environmental planning was realized at the end of the restoration.".

New English Paperback. Folio. (33 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 480 p., ills. The Assyrians: Kingdom of the god Assur from Tigris To Taurus.= Assurlular: Dicle'den Toroslar'a tanri Assur'un kralligi. The city of Assur, and the kingdom with its name derived from this city, were established by the early 2nd millennium BC along the bank of the Tigris River in northern Iraq, and continued their existence almost uninterrupted for about 1400 years until the end of the 7th century BC. Assyrian king lists provide a chronology of kings with their capital cities. Albeit with some uncertainties, the sequence begins with the names of kings who reigned at the city of Assur (Qal'at Sherqat) for more than 1000 years and continues in chronological order with kings who resided in the capital cities of the Neo-Assyrian Period, namely Kalhu (Nimrud), Dur-Sarruken (Khorsabad) and Nineveh (Koyunjuk). In this regard, among all states known in ancient Near Eastern history, the Assyrian Kingdom is one of those which maintained its political regime and its institutions of government for the longest time. The political model of governance that had begun to take shape in Mesopotamia during the 4th millennium BC in the lands of Sumer and Akkad matured under Assyrian rule throughout a long historical process of political development. The model of royal sovereignty and its associated institutions of governance and palace architecture, developed by the Neo-Assyrian Kingdom which built upon the experiences and traditions of deep-rooted Mesopotamian civilizations, were adopted and imitated in multiple ways by all kingdoms and empires which followed Assyria in the Near East.

New English Original bdg. HC. 4to. (32 x 24,5 cm). In English. 131 p. Color and b/w ills. Corpus of the mosaics of Turkey. Volume II: Xanthos. Part 2: The West area. The present book forms the second volume in the Corpus of the Mosaics of Turkey, following upon the initial work on Xanthos published by Marie-Patricia Raynaud in 2009. This new volume broadens the documentation and appreciation of mosaic art in that city. Future monographs in the same series will turn to other archaeological sites in Turkey, whose vast mosaic treasures are gradually receiving the scholarly attention they deserve. This entire project originated at a meeting of mosaic experts from six countries led by M. Sahin and D. Parrish and held at the American Research Institute in Turkey at Istanbul in 2004. In this work, Anne-Marie Manière-Lévêque, a very experienced member of the French team that has been excavating at Xanthos for many years, carefully records and interprets mosaic pavements from the western part of Xanthos, which includes buildings with mosaic decoration on the Lycian Acropolis and in the "Roman" Agora. The pavements ornamented both domestic and religious structures, and they include several fine figural carpets in addition to geometric floors. The pavement techniques consist of both opus tessellatum and opus sectile, and chronologically they cover the late Antique and Early Byzantine periods. These floors complement the fine assortment of pavements found in the East Basilica inventoried in the first Xanthos volume. In both its text and rich illustration, the present work maintains the high standard of scholarship employed in the earlier volume, and all of this is underscored by the author's deep familiarity with the archaeological exploration of Xanthos. Both books in the series serve as models for future mosaic research in Turkey. ARCHEOLOGY Anatolian civilizations Mosaic History of art.

This first volume of the Mosaic Corpus of Turkey places her among the countries of the Mediterranean world and Western Europe publishing systematically the mosaic wealth in their own lands. The project followed the serious models of Recueil general des mosaìques de la Gaule and Mosaici antichi in Italia. The corpus project was initiated at a meeting of mosaic experts from six countries led by M. Sahin and D. Parrish and held at American Research Institute in Turkey, Istanbul, in 2004. The first volume of the project covers the mosaics from Xanthos. This volume prepared for publication by Marie-Patricia Raynaud presents, with all their phases, the floor pavements of the East Basilica employing very successfully both opus tessellatum and opus sectile techniques. Two more aspects of this work need to be underlined: first of all, the magnificent photographs and the successful reconstruction drawings and floor plans of the mosaics, which will provide the reader with a visual festivity. This volume with its publication and research quality is a strong start for the Mosaic Corpus of Turkey. This also means that a high standard is already established for the future monographs.
