New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21,5 x 12 cm). In English. 262 p., color and b/w ills. Our Archaeological guides are written by well-know archaeologists in the hope that they might evoke the spirit of these sites for anyone interested in the remains of Anatolian civilizations. Illustrated with beautiful photographs, equipped with helpful plans and drawings, they are essential resources for travelers in Turkey. 'Who crosses the area of the Maeander, is at his east side threatened by the dark zig zag top of the Latmos, a granite mountain created by eruptions.Inhospitable and poor, this mountain, separated from the thoroughfare by a lake, has always been the most desolate area of the region. In the unparalleled wildness of jumbled rocks, the Latmos is one of the greatest nature experiences a traveller can be granted.' (M. Schede,1936). In this mountain region, which was so aptly described in his time by M. Schede, in the past years numerous, largely unkown settlement traces have been found, which are decisively characterised by the rock landscape of the Latmos. Mount Latmos was one of the sacred mountains of Anatolia; its top was the residence place of the highest god, the Weather God. Among the numerous recent discoveries the Prehistoric rock paintings with their unique imagery are undoubtedly the most important. In the Karadere Cave, presumably the central sanctuary of the Weather God, even the modern visitor becomes aware of the connection between the rock paintings and the mountain top. Dr. Anneliese Peschlow-Bindokat, scientific researcher at the German Archaeological Institute- Berlin (DAI), has been the director of the Latmos Project for more than 20 yeras. New Turkish Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In Turkish. [8], 379 p., 4 color plts., b/w ills. Arkeolojik veriler isiginda Türkiye'nin en eski kültürleri M.Ö. 1.000.000-550. Ulkemizin kultur mirasi, uygarlik tarihinin cok kucuk bir dilimini temsil eden ve daha cok kolay algilanir anit yapilarin bulundugu Efes, Bergama, Bogazkoy gibi buyuk oren yerleriyle ozdeslesmistir. Buna karsin gorkemli uygarliklarin nasil gelistigini ortaya koyan, onlarin onasamalarini temsil eden donemler goz ardi edilmis, calismalar Erken Cumhuriyet Donemi'nde kazisi yapilan Alisar, Alacahoyuk, Troya gibi birkac kazi yeriyle sinirli kalmistir. Arastirmalarin sinirliligi, uygarligin gelisim surecinin ogrenilip benimsenmesini engellemis, kalip bilgilerin ezberleme duzeyinde kalmasina neden olmustur.

The ancient city of Aphrodisias, which was the most renowned centre of sculpture for 600 years, had fallen into oblivion until being rediscovered and brought to public attention through photographs taken by the esteemed photographer Ara Guler. This event is without doubt foremost among Guler's countless contributions to awareness of Turkey throughout the world. In 1958 Ara Güler travelled to the town of Karacasu in Aydin province to photograph the Kemer Dam, and stumbled across Aphrodisias by accident after losing his way on the return journey from the dam. Photographs that he took during that first and several subsequent visits to Aphrodisias were published in many Turkish and foreign newspapers, periodicals and books, but until now have never been gathered together in a single publication. Call of Aphrodisias presents a large selection of these photographs. In publishing this collection of Ara Guler's photographs we wish to honour the memory of Prof. Kenan T. Erim, who from 1961 until his death in 1990 devoted himself to Aphrodisias to such a degree that his name came to be identified with the city; and Sevgi Gonul, who initiated the founding of the Geyre Foundation in 1987, but whose unexpected death in 2003 prevented her seeing the Sebasteion Sevgi Gonul Hall, one of the concrete results of her work on behalf of this spectacular ancient city.

Anadolu insaninin yani sira Turk ve dunya unluleri, Ara Guler'in dogru, kusursuz, keskinlikle ifade edilmis, yanilmaz, emin tavriyla 'Yuz Yuze' adi altinda izlenebiliyor. Ara Guler'in cektigi portrelerde yasamin icinden secilerek on plana yerlestirilen her kisinin arka planla cok saglam iliskileri bulunuyor. Dramatik isiklar, sonsuz ufuklar, koyu bulut kumeleri, zaman zaman anlatimda buyuk sorumluluk yukleniyor. Bunlar, leke dengeleri ozenle yerlestirilmis, ustun kompozisyonlar olusturuyor. Arka planda manzarayi panoya donusturen Guler, on plana cikardigi kisiyle yepyeni anlatimlar yaratiyor. Ucsuz bucaksiz Anadolu platosu, daglar, kentler Ara Guler'in fotograf karelerinde farkli bir estetikle 'Tanimak ve Anlamak' adi altinda sunuluyor.
