"The book includes the most important Antioch mosaic pavements displayed in the Hatay Archaeological Museum in Antakya, Turkey, seventeen different institutions in the USA and the Louvre. The mosaics were brought to light in and around Antioch on the Orontes (Antakya), Seleucia Pieria (Çevlik) and Daphne (Defne) in 1932-37. As a group, the Antioch mosaics demonstrate a remarkable continuity with the Hellenistic artistic tradition as seen in the preservation of classical subjects and decorative devices, such as the illusionistic treatment of the inhabited vine scrolls or ribbon borders. The common use of multiple borders to frame figural panels at Antioch is also reminiscent of the framing of Hellenistic emble-mata, or portable panels prepared in workshops and then inserted at the sites. The three-dimensional treatment of interiors and landscapes, the naturalistic representation of the human anatomy, and the variety of colors employed for the Antiochene compositions, indicate a dependence on painting styles. Such skill in the production of stone 'paintings' effectively denies the solidity of the floor and tricks the eye of the viewer, not to mention their physical relationship to the room itself. Finds from nearby sites (Apamea, Zeugma, Shahba-Philippopolis, and Palmyra) are similarly 'traditional' and point to the existence of a 'school' of eastern art beyond that of the Antiochene workshops. Such illusionism reaches the height of fashion during the Severan period in Antioch.".

New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. In English. 396 p. Anatolia in the Antique age was divided into many different regions such as Troas, Ionia, Aiolis, Mysia, Lydia, Phrygia, Caria, Lykia, Pamphylia, Pisidia, Cilicia, Commagene, Galatia, Bithynia and Pontus which had about a total of 1500 antique city settlements. Some of these city settlements were left under the soil as a result of the modern construction industry while many more still wait for being searched and excavated. Today, 133 of these cities were excavated and arranged. This work aims at introducing the relatively significant ones of the cities mentioned above that were excavated. We tried to use support the narrative with the city plans and up-to-date photographs. Although it was quite difficult to choose the photographs out of a rich collection of thousands of pictures that reflected the geographical riches of the land, we enjoyed the challenge and did our best in utmost meticulousness in picking the ones that we thought were fitting. New English Paperback. Pbo. Foolscap 8vo. (19 x 12 cm). In English. 180 p., color ills. The city of Aphrodisias, praised outside Anatolia - in the Mediterranean basin - with artefacts produced by sculptors in Antiquity, hasbeen brought to light by systematic excavations since 1961. The city has become more popular as the sculptures adorning the streets and buildings of thousands of years ago are unearthed.Today's world travellers are once again faced with the ancient residents of Aphrodisias, thanks to the dedicated efforts of scientists. True-life experiences of thousands of years have become more understandable as the inscriptions that they carried into the future are read and interpreted. The letters of the emperors, the verses engraved on stones which shed light on the city's social, cultural and economic life, and the graffitis drawn on the rows of the stadium and the theatre are such as to speak the past pages of history. Aphrodisias, which used to hold the ear of emperors at one ime, still astonishes and fascinates visitors today. The interest in and commitment to Aphrodisias of the Emperor Octavian is known through the letter he wrote to Stephanus, the governor of Laodicea:". "This one city I have taken for my own out of all Asia. I wish these people to be protectedas my own townsmen." This book prepared for travellers whose want to discover and face to history of Aphrodisias.

Aphrodisias was a free and autonomous city within the Roman province of Asia, in Western Turkey. It was best known for the sanctuary of its patron goddess, Aphrodite, and for its marble sculptors. The community prospered under the early and middle Roman empire (first-second centuries AD), when it built a complete set of marble buildings that made the town a proper city in ancient eyes. Aphrodisias sheds valuable light on interaction between Greek and Roman identity, the functioning of empire, religious conflict and accommodation, and transition from antiquity to the Middle Ages. Aphrodisian sculptors are known to have worked abroad on prestigious commissions, for example, at Hadrian's villa at Tivoli. The surviving body of sculpture is rich and varied. There are statues of gods, heroes, emperors, benefactors, philosophers, and athletes, as well as mythological groups, decorativefigures, and ornamental and figured relief sculptures. Many of the key pieces occupy key positions in the history of Roman art. The sculpture of the city is a legacy of unrivalled importance in this field. The archaeology of Aphrodisias gives a fuller, more vivid picture of later classical art in its ancient context than is possible at any other site. The book which is 47.8 by 35cms, is 240 pages. 175 full-colour plates, and plans with drawings give an amazing panorama of the marble city and its sculptures. Printed and hand-bound with exquisite Japanese cloth in Switzerland. Presented in a slipcase. text by Prof. R.R.R.Smith, Julia Lenagham, Photographs by Ahmet Ertug
New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (28 x 20 cm). In German; and Turkish abstract. [x], 244 p., many b/w plates.
