New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (22 x 14 cm). In English. 180 p. Color and b/w ills. "Situated in northwest Asia Minor on a volcanic rock overlooking the Gulf of Adramyttion, Assos now stands in the village of Behram Köyü, Çanakkale. The settlement goes back to the second millennium BC and was later re-established by Aeolian settlers from Methymna in the 7th century BC. Assos possesses the only temple in the Doric order in Archaic Asia Minor. Great construction activities were conducted in the 4th century BC during the tyranny of the Banker Eubulus and his slave Hermeias. Aristotle's visit and his founding a school in Assos in 347-345 BC are arguably the most famous events in the history of the city. During Roman rule, Assos established good relations with Rome and as a result it was granted autonomy and the right to issue coins. The visit of St. Paul is another important landmark in the history of the city. In 1838 some of the architectural blocks were smuggled to Paris. The Archaeological Institute of America carried out the first systematic excavations in Assos between 1881-1883. A century later, Turkish archaeologists started to dig on the site. With its archaeological remains, authentic village culture, beautiful sea, hotels, restaurants, olive groves and forests, Assos offers visitors an unforgettable experience and journey back in time. This book provides readers with a handy guide to Assos/Behram Köyü and its environs".

Çivi yazili metinler ve arkeolojik kaynaklar isiginda Asur Imparatorluk dönemi kraliçeleri.= Assyrian queens of the Imperial period in the light of the cuneiform texts and archaeological sources. The period between ca. 934-609 BCE is called the Neo-Assyrian or the Assyrian Imperial Period. The kings of Assyria who lived during this period are very well known, but the queens are less so. On these pages is information on the Assyrian queens' positions, titles and activities during the Neo-Assyrian Period. Our knowledge of these queens comes from textual as well as archaeological sources. During the 1988-1989 excavation season at Nimrud the queens' tombs were found at the Northwest Palace. These tombs included jewellery and objects belonging to three Assyrian queens, although ten Assyrian queens are known from this period. It is known that the Assyrian queens lived in the "harem" at the palace. They played an active role in the social, economic, religious and political life of Assyria. Some of them were very wealthy and had their own army under their command. They supported their husbands and sons as wife or mother. According to the sources, most of the Assyrian queens were not natives of Assyria. They came to the Assyrian palace from a foreign country via marriage. They had the title "woman of the palace" (in Sumerian, MI2.E2.GAL, and in Akkadian, segallu). The figure of the scorpion which appears on texts, seals and the other archaeological artefacts was identified with the queenship.

At the Crossroads of Empires: 14th - 15th Century Eastern Anatolia is a compilation of selected papers presented at a conference held in Istanbul in May 2007, treating history, coinage, architecture, and arts of the book. This publication gathers new scholarship about the remote, previously under-researched eastern parts of modern Turkey, from the final decades of Ilkhanid rule to the eve of the Ottoman empire. This is a very complex period and the lack of sources creates a serious handicap for its understanding. Much of the difficulty in dealing with the history of this region originates from its extreme political fragmentation and the rise of numerous local dynasties following the collapse of Mongol power in the mid-14th century. This book shows that cultural life flourished at various local centres despite long periods of political instability and discord in eastern Anatolia as it became embroiled in the ongoing conflicts between such states as the Mamluks and Ilkhanids, and later, the Timurids and Ottomans. This region, with its fertile lands and wealthy provincial centers, attracted the attention of the greater regional powers based in Egypt-Syria, Iran and western Anatolia. But the mountainous, somewhat harsh topography and considerable geographical distance from the centres of empires made it an area difficult to control from afar. Thus, local rulers and principalities, dependent, semi-dependent, and sometimes autonomous vassals thrived. Except where the Turkmen Aqquyunlu rulers managed to create their own empire, this area was never in the hands of a single dynasty. This picture of various factions is reflected in the artistic material which has no uniform and homogenous artistic style. Various traditions co-exist, so the area might best be defined as a cultural and artistic platform, where ideas circulated, emerged and interacted.
