New Turkish Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In Turkish. 335, [1] p., 139 numerous color, 126 b/w plates, tables. Tralleis Güney Nekropolü Terrakotta figürinleri. Terrakotta figurines of Tralleis Necropole. The terracotta figurines in this study were found throughout the South Necropolis of the Tralleis, with a large number coming from the barrel vaulted chamber tombs. The figurines were recovered in the earlier salvage excavations by the Aydin Archaeological Museum. The excavators records of objects found in a representative series of graves must form basis for our study of the chronology and styles of the figurines. Thirty three contexts are listed as of interest, but not of sharply defined chronological significance. The evidence for dating is derived for the most part from pottery, coins and other archaeological remains, the cemetery of Tralleis dates from the 2nd century B.C.E. at least through the 2nd century A. C. E. The figurines were each cast in a mold. In the 2nd century B.C.E. however, the number of molds used in the creation of a single figurine was increased. The manufacture of terracotta figurines in Roman Imperial Period was an industry. The clay of the Tralleis figurines are rather coarse but homogeneous and contains a fair amount of mica. Yellowish red clay with some mica was used rarely, and mostly in 2nd century B.C.E. Reddish yellow clay, sometimes burned light red, with mica, is characteristic of the finest pieces. The commonest clay is reddish yellow usually with mica, and often with a light white slim according to Munsell Soil Color Chart. According to the stylistic analysis, the influences from Attica, Tanagra, Boeotia and Myrina also are obvious among the early figurines at Tralleis. Flying figurines as Eros and Nike were prominent in the 2nd century B.C.E. Religious types are also found and include Aphrodite and worshipers. Other representations of deities included an Ariadne, Dionysos and his entourage. During the second half of the 2nd century B.C.E. genre groups with animals and standing draped women proliferated. Tralleis was destroyed by an earthquake in 26 B.C.E. and reconstructed with the efforts of Emperor Augustus. The typology repertoire of the 1st century A.C.E. consists of standing draped women and men, athletes with quiver, masks, actors, puppets, caricatures, animals and other mythological and religious types. This type of figurines was commonly found in most of the Mediterranean sites in the Hellenistic and Roman Imperial Period. The works of the coroplasts whose signatures are found in the South Necropolis may be examined here in more detailed. These are Trophimos, Simalionos, Theodotos, AA and the others. The signatures show that workshops were active at Tralleis in the Roman Imperial Period as early as the 1st century B.C.E. and continued to produce figurines until the 2nd century A.C.E. We may therefore assume the fabric of which the coroplasts are made to be a local fabric of its period. Each figurine is introduced by a general commentary that outlines the typology, chronology and significance of the class in the catalogue. Catalogue descriptions give factual detail, references to previous publications, and close parallels. Finally, typology and style of these examples can also be compared with the dated finds from the other contemporary sites and contexts. On the whole, the evidence presented points to the fact that the 2nd century B.C.E. was the most prosperous ones for the city of Tralleis.

In the Byzantine Empire, Constantinople served not only as an administrative, military, and religious center, but also as one of trade and commerce. The city was selected as the new imperial capital due to its geographical advantages, its vasthinterland, its situation as an ideal vantage point for travel by land and sea, and its safe natural harbors, making it a perfect location fo trade. Considering that medieval Anatolia, and especially Constantinople, was located at the center of a broad trade network and was a center of both production and consumption, trade is rightfully a continuing subject matter of Byzantine studies. In addition, since 2004, the Directorate of the Istanbul Archaeological Museums has carried out archaeological research in Üsküdar, Sirkeci, and Yenikapi, as part of the Marmaray and Metro projects. The excavations have revealed spectacular artifacts and new knowledge on Byzantine trade, ship-building technology, and ships and their cargo. Inlight of harbor excavation results and information accumulated from other ongoing research, it wastheright time to re-evaluatetrade in Byzantium. New findings and knowledge arising from the Yenikapi excavations, in particular, gave reason to revisit issues of trade in Byzantium again. The articles collected in this volume derive from papers presented at the Third International Sevgi Gönül Byzantine Studies Symposium on 'Trade in Byzantium' held in Istanbul on 24¿27 June 2013.

Sadberk Hanim Museum opened on 14 October 1980 as Turkey's first private museum and this year celebrates its thirty-third anniversary. The collection of Turkish and Islamic artefacts gathered by Sadberk Koç formed the original nucleus of the museum collection, which has since been greatly expanded by donations and purchases. With the purchase of the Hüseyin Kocabas collection in 1983 the museum branched out into the field of antiquities. The Archaeological Section of Sadberk Hanim Museum is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. The collection consisting of nearly 7000 objects ranges from the Late Neolithic Age to the Byzantine Period, making it possible to trace the course of successive Anatolian civilizations through their material culture. Archaeological Section of the museum has steadily grown over the years, with the purchase of rare items from overseas auctions and the acquisition of registered collections. Sadberk Hanim Museum Archaeological Section will have been open for 25 years in 2013 and it was decided to celebrate this anniversary with an exhibition entitled Traces of Ancient Ages, presenting 150 works that throw light on the periods to which they belong.

New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (22 x 14 cm). In English. 216 p., b/w ills. Tlos: A Lycian city on the slopes of the Akdag Mountains. Located on the western hillside of the Akda¿ Mountains, the ancient city of Tlos was a prominent Lycian settlement, due to its vast territory resting on the mountainous region and its commanding position overlooking the Esen river valley to the west. Long forgotten at the back room of the history, the ancient Lycian city has been woken up from its 11 thousand year sleep. During the excavations and surface surveys conducted since 2005, archaeological finds of great importance have been recovered, finds which reshape the history of this region. The link of prehistoric cultural routes extending over Western Anatolia to coastal Lycia has been documented for the first time through continuously inhabited settlements surviving from the Neolithic Period down to the present day. This book takes the reader interested in history on a long journey, guiding them through a region extraordinarily rich in archaeological remains.
