INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the front endpaper: "for Mary Dodge Evans -- / with best wishes of / Paul Jordan Smith / June 30 1966." "A personal chronicle of love and adventure on a road leading from the upper Valley of Virginia to the Redwood Groves of California. The author was a bookman for twenty-five years the literary editor of the Los Angeles Times and here makes a survey of literary tastes and of the changes in literary standards over sixty years. There are stories of his meetings with such writers as Thomas Hardy Arthur Machen Sir Hugh Walpole Hamlin Garland Havelock Ellis Sinclair Lewis and many others.
