Minister and Physician Shaw was an active suffragist. Born in Newcastle upon Tyne Shaw 1847-1919 emigrated to Lawrence MA in 1851. Shaw's family were unitarian abolitionists and their home was a stop on the Underground Railroad. She preached her first sermon as a methodist in 1870. She graduated from Boston University and refused ordination until 1880 when she became the first woman ordained by the Methodist Protestant Church. Six years later she got her MD from BU and was an organizer and speaker for the Mass. Suffrage Assoc. She was recruited by Susan B. Anthony to the National Woman Suffrage Assoc became a national lecturer and was the vice president of the organization 1892-1904 and President in 1911.
