18190010173France. Fair with no dust jacket. 1819. Ephemera. On offer is a 19th century copy of a letter written in 1819 by Camille Jordan a French official who survived both the early days of the French Revolution and the Federalist riots in the summer of 1793 that ushered in the Reign of Terror. Jordan was born in Lyon on January 13 1771 and died in Paris on May 19 1821. Son of a merchant opponent of the Revolution he became one of the promoters of the revolt of Lyon against the Convention . He sought to rally the peasants of neighbouring provinces to the royalist cause. He took refuge in Switzerland with the fall of his party and then went into exile in England. He returned to Lyon and managed to be elected by the administrative territory of Rhône et Loire as a member of the Conseil des Cinq-Cents. In September of 1797 there was a seizure of power by members of the French Directory when it seemed that Royalist elements in the republican government were gaining strength As a result Jordan was once again on the run. He managed to escape went to Switzerland and then to Germany. Recalled in 1800 by Napoleons consular government he was then put under surveillance for some time in Grenoble. He spoke out against the coup led by Napoleon and later joined the Bourbon party after the Emperor's downfall in 1814. On October 4 1816 Camille Jordan was elected deputy by the college of Ain became President of the House and on November 30 he was appointed Councillor of State. He obtained his re-election as deputy on October 20 1818 then approached the moderates and became one of the leaders of the constitutional opposition. In the session of 1819 he voted against emergency laws. Unfortunately it was then that he fell ill and died in the first months of 1821. This letter is a copy but not a modern copy. It was made at the time and the original was left with his son César. An excerpt of the letter follows: si nos constitutionnels et nos libereaux ont done quelque confiance en moi qu'ils se persuadent bien que je ne me laisse point egarer ice par une vaine complaisance poiur le ministere par une vaine amitie pour Rambaud mais je vois les choses d'en haut. Translation: if our constitutionalists and our liberals therefore have some confidence in me let them persuade themselves that I will not let myself be led astray by a vain complacency for the ministry by a vain friendship for Rambaud but I see things from above. The reference to Ranbaud is a reference to Pierre Thomas Rambaud counselor and subsequently attorney general at the Court of Lyon. For a historian or student of the French Revolution this is an excellent opportunity to acquire a piece of that history that is directly connected to one of the notable participants in that monumental historical event. This one-page document measures approximately 10.75 inches by 8.5 inches. It is worn on all four edges. There are some age stains but they do not obscure the text. Both parts of The Genus Bidens are profusely illustrated with 189 plates across the two texts. Collated complete. In the publisher's original soft covers. Ex-libris copies with archival annotations to the spines and front covers and again to the rear of the front free endpapers. Additional library stamps to title pages and at points throughout texts for example to the rear of plates. Externally moderate shelf wear as can be expected from examples of this age with several tears and chips to edges more signficant to the front cover of The Forests and Flora of British Honduras which also features a chip to the spine tail. Light discolouration spotting and marking to all works sunning more prominent to Flora of the Lancetilla Valley Honduras and Index of American Palms. Internally generally firmly bound fragile front hinges leading to the occasional delicate page. Bright and clean collection with any spotting mainly contained to the first and last few pages. Bulletin of the Bureau of Fisheries December 1908. <br /><br /><strong>DAVID STARR JORDAN</strong> 1851 - 1931 was president of Indiana University and subsequently the founding president of Stanford University. Jordan arrived at Stanford in June 1891 and immediately set about recruiting faculty for the university's planned September opening. He served Stanford as president until 1913 and then chancellor until his retirement in 1916. While chancellor he was also elected president of the National Education Association. Jordan was inspired to enter ichthyology by Louis Agassiz in the summer of 1873 at the Anderson School of Natural History on Penikese Island Massachusetts. From 1876 he customarily spent each summer collecting the earliest trips being largely along the rivers of the Allegheny Mountains and in much of the South. Later for the U.S. Fish Commission he collected and presented taxonomic monographs on fishes of the Pacific coast the Gulf coast Florida and Cuba and the fish faunas of the major American rivers. While at Stanford besides making many trips within California Jordan visited Mazatlán Mexico the Bering Sea Japan Hawaii Samoa Alaska and Europe. From 1908 to 1910 he served as the U.S. International Commissioner of Fisheries for the conservation of fisheries along the Canadian border. The result of Jordan's work was the naming of 1085 genera and more than 2500 species of fishes as well as synopses of the classification. An uncanny ability to distinguish similar species an unfailing intuition of diagnostic characters and a phenomenal memory made Jordan an outstanding taxonomist. Why Fish Don't Exist an interesting account of Jordan and his obsession with classification was published by Lulu Miller in April 2020 and reviewed in Science 12 June 2020 - Vol 368 p 1197. Extremely rare with Brown University holding the only copies cited in RLIN / OCLC of both pieces of sheet music and the Providence Cooperative Library holding only the Stowe "Uncle Tom's Cabin" song. <br/> Jules Jordan 1850-1927 the composer of the two songs offered here was a well-known singer composer and music director and teacher. He debuted the title role in Berlioz' "Damnation of Faust" in the U.S. served as conductor for over forty years of the Arion Club the most important musical society of its time in Providence R.I. He composed one opera that was performed more than once in the 19th century "Rip Van Winkle" to very good notices. He composed a number of one-act pieces usually on American themes and a number were performed by the Boston Festival Orchestra. <br/> Jordan met Caroline Hazard 1856-1945 the fifth president of Wellesley College early on in his singing career ca. 1875 when he sang at the Grace Church in Providence. Mrs. Rowland Hazard mother of Caroline introduced her son and daughter Caroline and arranged for both to study singing with Jordan. A few years later Caroline and her brother organized the Narragansett Choral Society hoping Jordan would be the director. He was too busy at that time but several years later was successfully prevailed upon by Miss Hazard. Their friendship and association lasted many years. Hazard was also a member of the Arion Society for the years Jordan was director. <br/> Both Caroline Hazard and Jules Jordan were poets but Jordan's role was usually that of composer and orchestrator in his collaborations. Caroline Hazard<br/>published her first book NARRAGANSETT BALLADS in 1894. She was appointed President of Wellesley College in 1899. Both these songs are of a patriotic nature and it should be noted that a 1903 concert of patriotic songs by Jordan was held on July 3 1903 in Sayles Hall at Brown University and that "Western Land" was performed program for concert at Brown University. While the music is not what is associated with the "Battle Hymn" it is suited to the verse and has a pleasant tune. Jules Jordan notes in his memoirs an abundance of friends so the appearance of inscribed copies of his composed songs should be more plentiful than they are. "When Jordan started his mathematical career Galois's profound ideas and results Which had remained unknown to most mathematicians until 1845 were still very poorly understood. Jordan was the first to embark on a systematic development of the theory of finite groups and of its applications in the directions opened by Galois. Chief among his first results were the concept of composition series and the first part of the famous Jordan-Hölder theorem proving the invariance of the system of indexes of consecutive groups in any composition series up to their ordering. He also was the first to investigate the structure of the general linear group and of the "classical" groups over a prime finite field and he very ingeniously applied his results to a great range of problems; in particular he was able to determine the structure of the Galois group of equations having as roots the parameters of some well-known geometric configurations the twenty-seven lines on a cubic surface the twentyhyphen;eight double tangents to a quartic the sixteen double points of a Kummer surface and so on.Another problem for which Jordan's knowledge of these classical groups was the key to the solution and to which he devoted a considerable amount of effort from the beginning of his career was the general study of solvable finite groups. From all we know today in particular about p groups. a field which was started in the generation following Jordan with the Sylow theorems it seems hopeless to expect a complete classification of all solvable groups which would characterize each of them for instance by a system of numerical invariants. Perhaps Jordan realized this; at any rate he contented himself with setting up the machinery that would automatically yield all solvable groups of a given order n."
