Very Good English Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In Turkish. 61 p. First and only Turkish Edition of Muhammad Iqbal of Lahore's 'Armughan of Hijaz' printed in 1938 firstly was a philosophical poetry book of Allama Iqbal, the great poet - philosopher of Islam. This work, published a few months after the poet's death, is a fairly small volume containing verses in both Persian and Urdu. It is incomplete, although this is not readily apparent to the reader; for Iqbal left some gaps in the book which he intended to fill when he made the pilgrimage to Mecca. The title means "Gift from the Hijaz." He had long wished to undertake the journey to the Arabian Peninsula to perform the Hajj and to visit the tomb of Muhammad, but was prevented from doing so by continuous illness during the last years of his life. Iqbal began composing the Armaghan as a gift to take to the Hijaz, intending to publish it on his return to India as a "Gift from the Hijaz" to his countrymen. In this, his last work, we find the poet more withdrawn and introspective than previously. The poems are shorter and more personal. The impression left is that the author is taking a last look at the world around him before leaving it behind. The themes are largely the familiar ones, but the treatment is as fresh, forceful and delicate as ever. Iqbal's outspokenness, even when addressing God, in criticizing human evils and in his hatred of injustice and oppression and his devotion to Muhammad and his companions, all remain undiminished. As a summing-up of the ideas and feelings of a great thinker, the Armaghan merits a special place among the literary classics of the twentieth century. It is divided into two parts, the first containing Persian, the second Urdu poems. The Persian verses, all in ruba'i form, are divided into five groups and presents God the Truth, Muhammad, the Muslim nation, Mankind and the "Companions on the Path to God." The second part comprises Urdu poems composed between 1935 and the time of his death and include a poem describing the ideological confusion of the poet's time and its impact on Muslims. In this work, Iqbal touches on practically every question with which he had been preoccupied during his life of intellectual striving and literary achievement. The poems which comprise this final work give the impression that the writer has at last found the tranquility he had for so long sought: 'The song that has gone may come again - or may not. A fresh breeze may come from Hijaz - or may not. The days of this poor humble man are ended; Another knower of secrets may come - or may not.'.
Fine English Paperback. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In English. [xvi], 246 p. The Turkish War of Independence and the Independencce Struggle of the South Asian muslims: The Khilafat movement, (1919-1924). Translated from Turkish by Oya Akgönenç Mughisuddin. In the early part of the 20th century, both South Asian muslims and the Anatolian muslims were suffering from cruelty and pain inflicted by the foreign powers in collaboration with the non-Muslim populations in the two regions. Both the muslim Turks and the South Asian muslims were suffering agonies in the lands where they were or had been the 'Ruling Nations'. Between the years 1919-1924, Turkey, with a great deal of human and material sacrifices, managed to remain an independent country. In the same period, the South Asian muslims set their course firmly toward freedom and independence. During his historical period, Islam linked the two countries together, Islam was not just a common belief but a philosophy that gave birth and substance to the struggle for independence. Thus, the Turks and the South Asian muslims were joined together by the common struggle for freedom concelved and nurtured by the Islamic factor. This study concentrates on the Khilafat Movemenet in South Asia. Those activities of the Khilafat Movement that coincided with Turkish interest had been highlighted in the study. Also, the role of Islam in the struggle for freedom in South Asia and Islam's role (if any) in the Turkish struggle for independence will be discussed and analyzed in this book.
