RARE reprint from The Journal of the Palestine Oriental Society of a thoroughly documented study of the cults, shrines ('awlia) and sanctuaries (maqamat) of Muslim saints, a major contribution to the ethnography of Arab Palestine (especially popular Islam and popular religion in Palestine) by Tawfiq Canaan (1882-1964), a pioneering physician, ethnographer and Palestinian nationalist. Besides being a major medical researcher and the first President of the Palestine Arab Medical Association, the director of several Jerusalem area hospitals before, during, and after the 1948 war, he wrote several books and more than 50 articles on the subject of Palestinian folklore in English and German, which serve as valuable resources to researchers of Palestinian and Middle Eastern heritage. Tawfiq was also a collector of over 1,400 amulets and talismans held to have healing and protective qualities, and upon publishing analyses of these objects, and other popular folk traditions and practices, he was recognized already in his lifetime as a major ethnographer and anthropologist. Contains also a Hebrew title-page, though the book is in English. 215x140mm. VIII+331 pages. Softcover. Cover and spine slightly rubbed. Cover and pages upper corner slightly bumped/wrinkled. Rif. Bibl.: Brunet IV: 1204.

Selig Schachnowitz (1874-1952), noted neo-Orthodox journalist and writer. In 1908, at the invitation of Agudat Israel in Germany, he became editor of Der Israelit, a post he held for 30 years until the journal was closed down by the Nazis in 1938. He escaped to Switzerland, taking up residence in Zurich, where he continued his public and literary work until his death. Following a visit to Israel in 1931, he wrote "Zwischen Ruinen und Aufbau in Erez-Israel", which praised agricultural settlement and expressed strong reservations about the lack of religious observance in the new Israel. He was a prolific writer and although his various publicistic works were of a religious propagandist nature, many were of a high literary standard and attracted numerous readers. For a review of Schachnowitz's travelogue in Palestine, see Wolf Kaise: "Palästina, Erez Israel" (Doctoral Thesis, Berlin, 1988).

Pinkser (1821-1891) born in Odessa, was originally an advocate of Haskalah enlightenment and assimilation for Russian Jews. However, after the pogrom of 1881, he became a Zionist. As such, he led the organization Hibbat Zion, supported emigration to a Jewish homeland, and published his famous book, Auto-emancipation. Originally published anonymously, this work analyzed the psychological and social roots of antisemitism and called for the establishment of a Jewish national center. Though Pinsker did not originally wish to endorse Palestine as the only possibility for the Jewish homeland, towards the end of his life, he was convinced that it was the only workable option. XXXIII, (1bl.), 522pp.,
