EXTREMELY RARE complete English translation of the 'Mejelle' (1869-1876) - the civil law of the Ottoman Empire in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the first (partial) codification of Islamic law undertaken without having recourse to secular borrowings. This full translation of the 'Mejelle' was made by C.A.Hooper - Gilchrist Memorial Scholar in Turkish and Ouseley Memorial Scholar in Arabic in the University of London, who also wrote a short introduction to a more detailed study of the 'Mejelle'. 220x140mm.
