New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (28 x 24 cm). In English and Croatian. 173 p., color ills. Traces of Ottoman culture in Croatia.= Tragovi Osmanske kulture u Hrvatskoj. Text by Andelko Vlasic. "One of the aims of this book is to remind both the Croatian and Turkish public of the significance of the Ottoman heritage for the cultural wealth of Croatia, as well as Turkey and the balkans, because the fullness of ouor common heritage would be seriously lacking in scope if it was not for the Ottoman part. Readers of this book will, hopefully, be surprised byb the sheer number of Croatian towns and villages whose historical development included (unfortunately, mostly poorly researched) an Ottoman period, and whose topography includes numerous buildings, monuments and historical remains originating in the mentioned period.".
8vo., First Edition, with tinted frontispiece, wood-engraved title-vignette, 20 plates printed in blue, numerous wood-engraved illustrations in the text and 6 large folding maps (one printed in colours), some faint offsetting from fold-ins to free endpapers; sand cloth, upper board and backstrip lettered in green, a near fine copy in unclipped dustwrapper, the latter lightly rubbed at extremities. In one of the earliest personal memoirs of naval service in WWII, Seligman gives a thinly veiled account of his experiences in the Aegean in 1941 when he helped to smuggle five Russian merchantmen through the Axis blockade. He returned on MV OLINDA and that journey also is described in full. Although there is no connection whatever, this little-known story is reminiscent in sheer daring and blatant skulduggery of Maclean's fictitious 'The Guns of Navarone'. This is an extraordinary book in other ways. Produced by a major publisher not often given to war memoirs, it is unusually well-produced with lavish illustration and large and detailed maps. The print run must have been small for it is very scarce, especially in this condition. Enser, p.63; Law, 0360.
1st Edition. Original Paper Wrappers. 8vo. 50 pages ; 23 cm. In German. Title Translates Into English as, Chronicle Of Ahimaaz ben Paltiel (850-1054) . A Contribution To The History Of The Jews In Southern Italy. David Kaufmann (1852 1899) was a Jewish-Austrian scholar born at Kojetín, Moravia (now in the Czech Republic) . From 1861 to 1867 he attended the gymnasium at Kromerí, Moravia, where he studied the Bible and Talmud with Jacob Brüll, rabbi of Kojetín, and with the latter's son Nehemiah. (Wikipedia, 2016) Kaufmann was a prolific and influential thinker who wrote on many subjects including Philosophy of Religion, Art, and Jewish History. This was one of his last published works. It deals with the famous chronical of Ahimaaz ben Paltiel, which, though intended merely to glorify his own immediate ancestors, gives much important information in regard to the history of the early Jewish settlements in such towns as Oria, Bari, Otranto, Gaeta, Benevento, Capua, Amalfi, in southern Italy, and Pavia in northern Italy. (Wikipedia, 2016) SUBJECT(S) : Jews -- Italy. Paper Browning. Some wear and cracks to pages along the edges with no text affected. A few pages unopened. Good condition. (GER-58-36)
