1876004112Philadelphia: Pomeroy Whitman and Company 1876. Very Good . 1 double-leaf print from the 1876 Atlas of York County Pa. Signed "Ray Del." Contains an aerial view of the ironworks with inset illustrations showing sections of the house front department and the machine shop as well as several close-ups of machinery. Also shows a steam locomotive on the train tracks running in front of the ironworks. The ironworks was located on W. North Street in York. The company was founded in 1840 by Elisha Geiger and Samuel Bechtol; other partners during the 19th century included Alexander Small Edward G. Smyser and Smyser's sons. "E.G. Smyser" appears over the central door in the print with "Variety Iron Works" above that. In 1877 it opened an office in Baltimore where much of the ornamental ironwork was sold. The company also produced iron castings for J.W. Fiske Co. in New York City beginning in 1869. The company continued to operate until 1941. As of 2013 the central building was being used by the York Academy Revinoal Charter School. In Very Good Condition: slight staining along edges not impacting the image; solid and otherwise clean. 1922100050<p>New York: Atlantic Terra Cotta Company 1922. 1922. Good. - Quarto 11 inches high by 8-1/2 inches wide. Softcover bound in light gray stapled wraps titled and decorated in charcoal. The edges of the covers are darkened the top inner corner is creased and there is a short tear to the front edge of the front cover. 20 pages including the covers illustrated from black & white photographs and plans. The front edges of the pages are slightly darkened and the corners lightly bumped and there is a tiny tear to the front edge of a couple of pages. Good.</p><p>A periodical which also serves as a trade catalog for the Atlantic Terra Cotta Company located in New York and it's Southern branch the Atlanta Terra Cotta Company located in Atlanta Georgia with a description of the company's services printed inside the front cover.</p><p>As per the preface "This issue marks the revival of Atlantic Terra Cotta our monthly magazine suspended since 1917. . As indicated the coming series will follow an entirely new plan. Instead of illustrating modern Atlantic Terra Cotta the contents will be confined to illustrations of early Italian Terra Cotta". This issue focuses on "The Ospedale Maggiore Milan": "Started by Filarete of Florence in 1456 thirty-six years before Columbus sailed and continued by other architects in succession the Ospedale Maggiore was finally completed by Richini in 1626." "The materials uses were standard at the time as they are to-day; stone up to the water table and brick and Terra Cotta above ; the pilaster and column shafts of local stone. The two ships made numerous voyages between the United States Europe and the Caribbean. The present log book contains line accounts of expenditures for journeys from London and Marseilles to New York and Norfolk in 1827; from Antwerp to London in 1828; from Philadelphia to the West Indies in 1829; from Madeira to the Turks Islands in 1831; from the West Indies to Pensacola to Havana in 1832; from the Indies to New York in 1833; and other similar voyages. The log also contains two copies of an 1832 letter written in Havana by Hill to merchants there inquiring about the price of molasses and a list of port charges at several major way points. This is a promotional piece put out by the Atlantic City Real Estate Board. It starts off with a health report highlighting the virtues of Atlantic City including information on its hospital the temperatures one can expect and the benefits of bathing in its waters. However most of the 64 pages are dedicated to presenting real estate values in Atlantic City. The brochure shows changes in property values from the early part of the last century to about 1925. 18741240Baltimore: The Patapsco Land Company 1874. First edition. Hardcover. Octavo. 100 pages. Bound in brick red cloth over boards with upper board titled in gilt. A few light extremity rubs. Slight age-toning inside. Map has a few short clean separations at fold intersections. Fine condition overall. Large fold-out map. This is a detailed prospectus seeking investment in the newly reorganized Patapsco Land Company which intended to turn its holdings at Curtis Bay into a major seaport and railhead. The background information included therefore gives much of interest relating to the evolution of shipping and railroads at Baltimore.<br /> <br /> The large map in a rear pocket shows the planned layout of the city of Pennington named for the PLC's controlling family. A copy of this prospectus was even delivered to the U.S. House of Representatives in hopes of getting buy-ins from major players in the shipping and railroad industries which would be essential for the plan to succeed. Alas despite the seemingly solid plan and convincing sales pitch the PLC could not get sufficient capital together to pull it off. And thus there is no town of Pennington Maryland today. Dated March 27th 1865 at the Rooms of the Y.M.C.A. in Washington D.C. this document reads as follows: <br /> ____________<br /> <br /> "The undersigned hereby organize ourselves into a 'Special Relief Corps' to be held in readiness to send not exceeding three of our members at one time to help care for sick and starved soldiers at the U.S. General Hospital at Annapolis Maryland. We agree that our delegates shall remain at Annapolis working under the supervision of either the local manager of the U.S. Christian Commission stationed there or of the Directress of said hospital for a time not exceeding three days excepting as they may be able or willing voluntarily to remain longer. Otherwise in cases of special emergency their places are to be filled by others of our number all of whom are to be held in readiness to go to Annapolis upon notification by telegram or otherwise of such services being needed. <br /> <br /> signed Geo. It was the primary receiving point for Union soldiers wounded in the eastern theatres of the war as well as those being returned from Confederate prisons such as Libby and Andersonville. The former prisoners were in shockingly poor health due to the conditions in which they were held with many dying on the transports to Annapolis and those who survived needing much attention. Original handwritten letter dated March 27 1865 from the "Rooms of the Y.M.C.A." in Washington DC. The letter organizes a "Special Relief Corps" of short term nurse volunteers standing ready to travel from Washington DC to Annapolis to assist in the care of soldiers in the U.S. General Hospital there. The text of the letter is as follows: <br /> <br /> "The undersigned hereby organize ourselves into a 'Special Relief Corps' to be held in readiness to send not exceeding three of our members at one time to help care for sick and starved soldiers at the U.S. General Hospital at Annapolis Maryland. We agree that our delegates shall remain at Annapolis working under the supervision of either the local manager of the U.S. Christian Commission stationed there or of the Directoress of said capital for a time not exceeding three days excepting as they may be able or willing voluntarily to remain longer. Otherwise in cases of special emergency their places are to be filled by others of our members all of whom are to be held in readiness to go to Annapolis upon notification by telegram or otherwise of such services being needed."<br /> <br /> The "starved soldiers" referred to in the letter were Union prisoners of war recently released from Confederate prison camps. Annapolis was the receiving station for prisoners returning from Andersonville Belle Isle Libby Prison and other Confederate prisons.<br /> <br /> The document is signed by eight men including George May Powell notable Y.M.C.A. activist Lincoln supporter and Treasury Dept statistician and Benjamin Stinemetz national vice-president of the Y.M.C.A. unknown
