With 50 b/w illustrations including a tissue-guarded frontispiece. This copy has the bookplate of Frederic Augustus Lucas 1852-1929 who joined the Smithsonian Institution in 1882 and became its assistant curator in 1887. He was promoted to curator from 1893 and served in that capacity until 1904. From 1904 to 1911 he was the curator-in-chief at the Museum of the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences. From 1911-1923 he was director of the American Museum of Natural History in New York. Among his books are ANIMALS OF THE PAST 1901 and ANIMALS BEFORE MAN IN NORTH AMERICA 1902. In 1933 his autobiography FIFTY YEARS OF MUSEUM WORK was published by the American Museum of Natural History The book covers the mosquito life cycle; their role in Malaria and Yellow Fever; natural enemies such as fish carnivorous insects night hawks whippoorwills bats; remedies against mosquitoes drainage/filling or use of kerosene on breeding pools; introduction of fish; eucalyptus; remedies for the bites; collecting and preserving mosquitoes; etc. First Edition.
