Unpublished notebook 9" x 11 1/4" containing original artwork and designs official documents orders and correspondence pertaining to regimental coats of arms and distinctive insignia for the period 1922-1930. Notebook opens with three pages of formal guidelines for regimental colors and devices then begins in earnest with original signed Adjutant General order No. 244 October 1922 calling Falls "to active duty without pay or allowances for service in connection with submission of coats of arms for colors distinctive badges insignia etc." The notebook contains 2 full-page original watercolors and 16 original crest and shield drawings in color pencil State National Guard Headquarters and 7 regiments - 10th 14th 71st 105th 106th 107th 108th Infantry along with correspondence blueprints design approval documents and finely printed samples for some designs. There is detailed correspondence on Falls' New York State "Half Moon" design when the Quartermaster Corp of the War Department in Washington severely altered his original conception. Author artist military general and New York City socialite DeWitt Clinton Falls 1864-1937 was an authority on military heraldry and uniforms and a designer of military insignia. His papers are held by the New York Public Library and the American Numismatic Society. TLS from Austin Heaton Carr of Winston-Salem laid in explaining that this copy was presented by John Motley Morehead to his grandfather Julian Carr on account of his grandfather's close friendship with Eugene Morehead: the two left Chapel Hill to fight for the confederates and Eugene was later best man at Julian's wedding. Limited issue numbered 15 of only 25 copies and signed by Morehead and presented to General Julian S. Carr. This influential periodical began as a biweekly newspaper first issue dated 5 May 1949 eventually migrating to a quarterly magazine final issue dated Spring 1997. Vols. 1-22 are custom-bound in brown leatherette lettered in gilt on front covers and spine panels Vols. 1-3 in the original elephant folio format of the Dutchman Vols. 4-22 in standard quarto magazine format. Note that the title changed to "Pennsylvania Folklife" with Vol. 9. Vols. 23-46 are unbound each issue individually sleeved. Vol. 1 consists of 25 issues with some still bright white suggesting that they are possibly from a later reprint Vols. 2-3 of 22 each Vols. 4-5 of 15 each Vols. 7-45 mostly of 4 each with some volumes in the '60s including an unnumbered 5th "Folk Festival" issue and Vol. 46 of 3 issues all published totaling about 260 issues. The entire set is solid Near Fine to Fine the bound volumes all essentially as issued except of course for having been bound in hardcover and the unbound issues show only slight handling wear in some cases most virtually unworn. The bound volumes show two former owner signatures/stamps on the front flyleaf of each volume but are otherwise unmarked. One of the South's early preservationists Alice Huger Smith collaborated with her father historian D. E. Huger Smith providing architectural drawings for two important publications: Twenty Drawings of the Pringle House 1914 and The Dwelling Houses of Charleston South Carolina. The contents are housed in original hinged 16- x 18-inch paper-covered boards with moderate to heavy smudging mostly in area of three slots for closure although ribbon or cardboard for these slots is now missing. Contents pages loose as intended include title page; "The Colonial House of Miles Brewton: With Some Account of its owners" a three-page essay by D. E. Huger Smith; all 20 prints which are lightly foxed with "holes" along edges of at least one print does not affect image itself and appears to be a thinning or defect in paper. ; . Created in a city where redlining confined most Black residents to Atlantic City's Northside neighborhood the volume and accompanying ephemera situate one student's educational experience within broader histories of African American urban life public schooling in the Jim Crow North Depression-era youth culture and Black alumni civic organization.<br /> <br /> Archive dates primarily from 1933 with later additions from 1978 and subsequent reunion years; ten items total. Virtually complete through Vol. 74 2009 4 issues per year missing only the following 9 issues: 52.4 53.1 and 4 58.1 and 2 67.1 70.2 and 3 70.4 thus 287 of 296 issues. Notably well preserved presentation copy showing a pastedown 4" x 3.5" mounted on front fixed endpaper inscribed "Faithfully yours / Jacob A. Riis / Christmas 1909." Mounted on the adjacent front flyleaf is the calling card of the recipient Mr. William W. J. Warren inscribed as follows: "Christmas 1909. -- / Mr. Riss sic called today -- / he gave me his autograph / for front cover of book." Also signed by a later owner William Duncan along top edge of front flyleaf. Warren is mentioned on p. 435 of Riis's text as W. W. J. Warren "faithful in good and in evil report" among the author's concluding acknowledgments where a second calling card stained by rust from a paper clip no long present is laid in pp. 435-440 are slightly indented from the clip and pp. 434 440 and 441 show a light rust impression. According to his obituary in American Stationer & Office Manager Vol. 88 Warren 1844-1921 was president of Stewart Warren & Co. a stationery manufacturing firm located at 129 Lafayette St. in New York a personal friend of Henry Ward Beecher and lived in the Richmond Hill section of Brooklyn as the next-door neighbor of Riis until the latter moved to Barre MA where he died in 1914. Original illustrated edition of an influential autobiography by the pioneering documentarian photographer and social reformer whose "How the Other Half Lives" was a landmark expose of living conditions in the Lower East Side tenements that led to reforms and provided Riis with an international reputation. Unpaginated. 8pp. Original illustrated wrappers with black and white lettering to covers.<br /> <br /> This 8-page pro-Hindenburg political pamphlet was published after the first round of the 1932 German presidential elections March 13 and which saw no candidate obtaining an absolute majority of the votes cast though the incumbent President Paul von Hindenburg with 49.6% failed only by a narrow margin. <br /> <br /> Hindenburg was opposed to Adolf Hitler NSDAP who arrived second with 30.1% Ernst Thälmann KPD who made it to the third place with 13.2% Theodor Duesterberg Stahlhelm who arrived fourth with 6.8%. The lesser candidates gathered 0.3% of the votes cast. <br /> <br /> These were the second and final direct elections to the office of President of the Reich Reichspräsident Germany's head of state under the Weimar Republic. Under the Weimar system the presidency was a powerful office. <br /> <br /> Hindenburg who deeply distrusted and personally detested Hitler had been motivated to run for a second term primarily by a desire to stop Hitler from winning the presidency. Nevertheless following his re-election Hindenburg failed to prevent the Nazis from assuming power. Two successive federal elections left the Nazis as the largest party in the Reichstag and anti-democratic parties in control of a majority of its seats. Under this political climate Hindenburg reluctantly appointed Hitler as Chancellor of Germany on January 30 1933.<br /> <br /> This pamphlet titled "Erwachen." Awakening is profusely illustrated with numerous duo-tone photogravures and illustrations by C. Vogt depicting a character named Michel asleep dreaming and waking up to a better and safer Germany with Hindenburg. The last page contains the following warning: "Get rid of radicalism! Black cloth with bright red lettering top block edges dyed red a fine copy in a beautiful dust jacket with no rips or tears. A splendid copy. Unusual in that there is a 4 page insert on bright red paper giving a brief description and a location map! The 4th Lt. Valcour title. "An extortionist's note demanding $20000 in cash and threatening the kidnapping of Kate Willett's two mentally unbalanced sons sent Lieutenant Valcour rushing up to the Willetts' Adirondacks camp. There death struck with slashing suddenness while Valcour was talking to young Arthur Willett who was sprawled on a sofa smoking a cigarette. Listening to the crackling roar of flames in the fireplace Valcour detected the odor of burning cloth. He glanced at Arthur to find the cigarette lying in Arthur's lap and Arthur's chin slumped on his chest.
