18321304Annapolis: S.n. 1832. Single sheet folded in half to 7 5/8" x 12 1/4. Fine condition with old horizontal folds no doubt for placement in a delegate's vest pocket. There is one clean 3/4" tear along the edge of one of these folds otherwise nearly perfect. Typeset and printed draft of a substitute bill which was adopted by the Maryland General Assembly on March 8 1832. The bill was to supplement to Maryland's law regarding elections originally enacted in 1812. <br /> <br /> The present bill noting that the United States Congress had not yet acted on its apportionment bill following the 5th Census to fix "the ratio of representatives from the several states in this Union" proposes to divide Maryland into districts for the purpose of choosing electors for United States President and Vice-President and to specify the numbers of electors from the counties within those districts. <br /> <br /> Henry Brawner was a delegate from Charles County. Jesse Hunt whose bill Mr. Brawner sought to displace was a delegate from Baltimore City. There are several changes to the printed text penned in an unknown hand though surely a member of the General Assembly.<br /> <br /> For discussion of the General Assembly's consideration of this substitute bill and the original it replaced see "Journal of the Proceedings of the House of Delegates of the State of Maryland December Session One Thousand Eight Hundred and Thirty-One" pages 507-511.<br /> <br /> An interesting piece of Maryland elections and legislative history from a simpler time. A toyshop owner plans to massacre thousands on the Christmas holiday by supernaturally animated small toy soldiers dolls and animals with small poisoned blades. This story influenced other writers and can be seen today in popular film such as Chuckie and others. Jessica Amanda Salmonson writes in her introduction to O'Brien's works ".O'Brien is the most important figure after Poe and before Lovecraft in modern horror literature. Folio 7 pages 13 1/8 x 8 ¼ inches duty blindstamp small ink stamp to upper inner margin of the first page two seals to the last page signed twice by Galindo. Toned some small repaired tears using reversible archival ph-neutral paper-repair tape very good to near fine. Very Good. An interesting document of privateering in the Peninsular war this ‘Public Instrument of Protest‘ documents a Portuguese captain and crew complaint in detail to an English notary. After sailing from Calcutta to Brazil and then from Rio to just outside of Lisbon their ship the 700-ton ‘Oceano’ was seized and comprehensively ransacked by a French privateer the ‘Lion’ out of Lorient. Most of the crew and passengers were offloaded onto a passing American vessel the ‘Leda’ bound for Lisbon. Meanwhile the ‘Lyon’ escorted her prize towards the nearest French port but before a friendly haven was reached they were both set upon by the brigantine HMS ‘Achates’. The ‘Lyon’ escaped but the ‘Ocean’ was captured by Commander Morrison and the ‘Achetes’. The ’Ocean’ was taken to Plymouth and moored in the Hamoaze. The remaining Portuguese crew who had been forced to remain aboard the ‘Ocean’ by the French got a message to the ‘Ocean’s Master Dn. Ignacio Joze Martins and he and the boatswain made their way to Plymouth as quickly as possible. The sworn statement presented here is in English thanks to the translation given by Francisco Martins d' Magalhaens master of a Portuguese ship “now dwelling in Plymouthâ€<br /> <br /> The ’Oceano’ sailed from Calcutta to Brazil arriving 10th February 1813. She left Rio on 4th April all was plain sailing until the afternoon of the 7th June off the Rock of Lisbon when the ‘Lion’ showed up first under false British colors then French. The fighting was fierce the privateer was driven off once but eventually the ‘Oceano’ was taken. The night of the 7th June was spent by the French ‘conveying everything Moveable and Valuable from the Ocean to the Privateer’. The ‘Leda’ the US vessel landed the majority of the ‘Ocean’s crew including the Master in Lisbon on the evening of the 9th June.Monday 14th June the ‘Lyon’ engaged in a running battle with HMS ‘Achates’ and escaped but the ‘Achates’ did capture the ‘Ocean’. Wednesday 16th June the ‘Ocean’ arrived in Plymouth under the watchful eye of the ‘Achates’. Receiving the crew’s message the Captain of the ‘Ocean’ left Lisbon for Falmouth and then Plymouth arriving on the 20th July. Spine is titled in gilt. Comes in a custom marbled paper slipcase. Two fold-out tables. Scarce report on the affairs of the Potomac Company in 1821 as investigated by a joint commission appointed by Maryland and Virginia. Here Maryland Governor Samuel Stevens formally transmits this report to the Maryland Legislature on January 1 1823.<br /> <br /> The Potomac Company was formed in the late 18th century with the object of reengineering the Potomac River to create a navigable link from the Ohio country to the port at Georgetown George Washington was an investor and served as the Company's first president. <br /> <br /> By 1821 the Virginia-Maryland joint commission found that the Potomac Company had "incurred heavy debts which their present resources can never enable them to discharge nor is it reasonable to expect in such circumstances that they can ever effect the objects of their incorporation."<br /> <br /> Further the commission found that the Potomac Company's sluice navigation system which was heavily dependent on "floods and freshets" was impractical and that only a still-water canal with locks could provide a navigable route that could be used consistently enough to be profitable. <br /> <br /> In the wake of this report the Potomac Company announced that it could not fulfill its charter. The project was subsequently taken up by the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Company chartered in 1825.<br /> <br /> OCLC locates 10 copies. Printed by J. Hughes unknown
45197Ephemera. Five photos of William Judson Sarratt 1877-1939 born in Schull Shoals Union County South Carolina. A large photo by Reckling & Sons studio Columbia South Carolina measures about 4 x 5 1/2 inches and is mounted on stiff black stock which has been neatly trimmed by us at the top to eliminate a jagged edge. It's a high-quality image of Sarratt in formal dress: black top hat black coat white tie white gloves. The reverse side notes he was a graduate of Clemson and president of his class. A second smaller image is dated 1897 by the photographer. The reverse identifies the subject as Judson Sarratt with printed photographer's promo info that this is one of 12 "So-Kute" Photos reproduced by J. M. House Photo Studio in Gadsden Alabama. It is almost identical to a larger 3rd image of Sarratt. A 4th image shows him apparently with a female cast member as part of a local drama. A 5th photo in sepia and taken by studio photographer P. B. Barnes Union S. C. shows Sarratt in a white suit and white hat and shoes against a tropical backdrop. All photos very closely resemble the Judson Sarratt who appears in a Sarratt family photo on page 245 of Union County Heritage 1981. ; . unknown

A very large engraved chart in two sheets combined size approximately 940 × 1230 mm overall total size 954 × 1252 mm with minimal hand-colouring mounted together on linen. Some foxing and light soiling with a few light stains and creases and trifling surface loss from insect damage; light wear to the edges; verso of the linen backing a little waterstained; overall a working map in decent condition. A large United States Navy Hydrographic Office chart with five inset charts showing the anchorages of Walwich Bay Walvis Bay Angra Pequena Lüderitz Bay and St Helena and channels through the Abrolhos and Manoel Luiz Banks. The two sheets incorporate corrections to December 1881 and January 1882 respectively. <p>Pencil annotations show the tracks of three voyages two south-east towards the Cape of Good Hope in March-April and November-December 1883 and one in the opposite direction in April-May 1886 this is identified in the right-hand margin as part of a voyage from Hong Kong to London made by one J.B. Newcomb. A further partial track is given in purple ink dated only 'Route in October November and December'. Lighthouses are highlighted with spots of red and yellow colouring. This prospectus solicited investors and presented its balance sheet and current activities listed officers and presented the "expert opinions" of geologist Major J.W. Otley the original surveyor of the Beaumont and other fields as to the worthiness of the company's properties at nearby Sour Lake Texas. No listings found on OCLC. A unique and early oil company prospectus with notable content on Kentucky and Texas oil. unknown

This work features José Gaspar known by his nickname Gasparilla supposedly lived c. 1756 1821 was a purported Spanish pirate the "last of the Buccaneers" who is claimed to have raided the west coast of Florida during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The volume shows light external age/wear and is solidly bound with clean pages. The book measures approximately 5 1/2" x 7 3/4" and contains 311 pages plus 3 pages of publisher's advertisements. The Murder of the Clergymans Mistress was the second of the Thatcher Colt mysteries. Thatcher Colt is the New York Police Commissioner. Police Commissioners do not usually involve themselves in the actual investigation of crime but Colt is the exception. The novel opens with the discovery of two bodies in a dinghy. One of the deceased is an Episcopal clergyman the other is an attractive young woman. Thatcher Colt wants to preserve the crime scene intact so he has the dinghy with the two bodies still in it transported to the city morgue. Colt is in possession of several important clues although they are clues that everybody else seems inclined to dismiss as being obviously of no importance. This is very much a story that adheres to the puzzle-plot formula. And the author proves to be very adept indeed at that formula. All Vintage Paperbacks come sealed in 2.5 mil plastic bag and taped closed with removable tape which will not tear the covers if it sticks to them when the book is removed. 1st Edition.
